Old Dogs Sweep Trophy Class!

Both series winner Mitch Guthrie (above) and event winner Shannon Campbell (below) have been driving in competition for many years. In looking back through over 1,000 event photos from this weekend we noticed that both drivers consistently kept their wheels down on the rocks. Carefully executed throttle control, well chosen lines, expert spotting were what it took to pull off the top spots.

Series Winners:
MitchGuthrie-Trophy Class
Joachim Schwiesow-Super Stock
Jeff Mello-Modified Stock

For the Trophy Class the hardest course was the last one, #10. The D gate was the highlight of the day for spectators. On the left Chris Durham calls to the crowd to clear back, "It's time to do something stupid". Chris poured on the steam, launching the truck up into the air and clearing the gate on the other side (above and left).
Course 10 completely changed the event for Jon Bundrant. When he started #10 he was in the lead for the event and the series win. On the last gate of his last course of the day everything changed. Jon's right side dropped into a rig eating trap. With the cage pined under the rocks tiny was pushed down onto the right front and right rear tires. The left side tires groped helplessly in the air. The rear axle was nearly vertical with the tire bound into V shaped wedge in front and a straight vertical face in the rear. Unable to move forward or back, Jon desperately tried everything to unpin Tiny. Growing frustrated, Jon floored the 3 Liter Fat Performance motor. The wheels were spinning wildly as he repeatedly sawed back and fourth on the steering wheel. The front right coil over shock was punctured from repeatedly being bashed into the rocks. Forward and backward he hammered and hammered Tiny mercilessly until finally the front right U joint and stub was spit out with a huge BANG-SNAP! Still fighting for first place and with under two minutes left on the clock the winch was pulled out and wrapped around a huge rock in front of them. The winch was unable to extricate Tiny from the rock's death grip. With the call of "TIME" by the judge, both the series and event wins slipped from Jon's hands in a crushing defeat at the last possible moment (above and below).

ProROCK rules do not allow the use of a spotter strap on rigs during competition but "Metolius Shawn" found a good use for his strap. Stringing his line between two large rocks 100' apart he walked across the line while hundreds of spectators watched from below (left).

The McClure buggie also recieved a little damage on the number 10 course. The left side body panal was torn off by the sharp rocks but they were able to complete the course including gate D (above & right).
Jennifer & Todd Little started their day on Trophy course #6. Disaster struck the husband and wife team when the right rear portal axle reduction unit. With no parts on hand they were unable to continue (above and left).
Jon Nelson had great day ending up in second place in the Trophy class. Nelson was the only one to easily crawl the D gate on course number 10. Looking at the obstacle this writer expected the longer wheel base of "Scrapper" to work against him. Nelson picked just the right line and crawled, carefully and confidently up and over. Just like a Sunday drive in the park, he made this section look easy.
The crowds are out in force this weekend! Thousands of screaming, cheering spectators line up on every rock and out cropping around the courses. Competition starts at 9:00 AM. Our next online update will be at Noon.
