The Legendary 21 Road

Johnny Lange
Ahh, what a refreshing site......Multiple rigged out Toyota's all lined up, tires aired down, and the eagerness of many die-hard Toyota rockcrawling fans ready to head to the ever so legendary 21 Road in beautiful Grand Junction, Colorado. And that is exactly what happened and what we are about to share with you.

For those that have not experienced this trail, let me say, it is quite a treat. Some killer terrain to be had and you had better come prepared. It is my recommendation that the trail should probably not even be attempted by a vehicle with open diff's... A locker or two would be good thing to have between the tires when traversing 21 Road.

The trail is located in Grand Junction, Colorado. It is accessed via I-70 and is just a hour and a half away from Moab, Utah. If you plan a trip to Moab, you mind as well plan heading to 21 Road and make the most out of your trip. Street signs easily show you where 21 Road is. Yes, it is between 20 and 22 Road. Imagine that. Follow 21 Road all the way up and it will place you at the beginning of the trail
head.

On the weekend of Memorial Day, May 2001, the Wild Yoats Toyota 4x4 Association headed out and met members of their Colorado Chapter to run this trail. We spent some days in Moab and moved onto Grand Junction for the finale' of this trip. The day was sunny, the temperature was great, and the four wheeling was spectacular!

Our group gathered at around 8:30 am but of course didn't head out on until about 9:30...Isn't that always the case."Hurry up and wait." What a famous cliché'.

Once everybody gobbled up some breakfast we were off! We started up the road picking up some more eager Toyota's awaiting our arrival to run the trail with us....What a sight, all the Toyota's! You gotta admit, what a feeling it is when people drive by and their necks are cranked checking out all the Toy's.... Check out the photo gallery

As we reached the dirt road we continued on only to find some damsel's in distress....Now, we have all pulled out some Jeep's, Ford's, and Chevy's, on the trails before......But a Honda? Yes Yes! A Honda....We all pulled to the side of the road to see what happened. There inside this newer Honda Civic was two female's, sobbing in tears with the look of fear plastered to their face....The teenager girls got a little excited and thought she was running a Baja in her Civic and didn't see the bridge around a turn...She came up to it and could not manage the turn and went off the edge....The Civic was literally balancing on a rock and on the edge from rolling down a ravine.

The Toyota's went into action! (this is where we all ripped open our shirts to reveal the big red "S"). Kevin Grove, A.O.R., quickly hopped into action as though he was a long time member of Search and Rescue and tactically positioned his rig for winching.

The cable came out and Civic was winched up the hill with no problems...The girls were very thankful and we continued on our way. Later, we discussed the situation, and someone mentioned they smelled the odor of alcohol coming from the girls....I don't really need to go into a preaching session here....But, that's what happens...

We pulled over at the head of the trail and made our necessary adjustments. Once everyone was locked in and aired down we started this awesome trail. Right off the bat we encountered a tight squeeze. Most of the shorter wheelbase's squeezed right through it...When it was time for me go through, it took a bit more....How about a 20-point turn and just a little bit of rock scraping on the side, but it went.

Some other's decided to take another route around this tight squeeze...This was a narly one definitely very picture worthy! Here you see John and showing us how to get over the alternate route...

Further down the trail, we encountered numerous other tight squeeze's. Some minor scrapes and scratch's to be had, but nothing serious.

Here you seen Randy Potter, A.O.R., trying not to catch his side and doing a very good job of not letting the rocks get to him.

21 Road is non-stop fun. After each obstacle, there comes another one. With our group of about 10
vehicle's this trail pretty much took up the whole day. It's a good idea to pack a lunch and plenty of water. You'll be on the trail all day. Extra emergency rations and equipment are also recommended. Once we arrived up to about the mid-point on the trail, we took a break for lunch and munched some chow. At the same time, we took a few minutes to peek at Nate's frowning tie rod. Nothing serious, and it would get him through the trail, and Nate came prepared with a spare.

Right after lunch, we all drove through "The Squeeze" with no problems, here you see Jeff, Don, and Tony making their way through this tight one.

I finally gave in....After pleading and pleading, the wife finally got her way and I let her take the wheel for some time...She really loves four wheeling and better yet, enjoys Toyota's just as well...And yes she does have a single sister!!

Part way up the trail, we had someone break the ol' Birfield Joint and some of the folk headed back into town. We continued up the trail for bit and made the best for the rest of the day. All in all it was a great day of wheeling and we only suffered from a little body damage, a bent tie rod, and one Birfeild.

See you on the trails soon, Happy Toyota wheelin!!
