We just recently moved here to Oregon from updstate New York. MY truck
(Edna, the '94)
made the trek on a flatbed trailer. OUR truck (the new 4Runner) we just
picked up about two weeks ago.
I've never done any off-roading with either Toy - but I'm getting anxious
to see what they've got. Its going to be nice now that I can prove to my
wife that I'm not the only Toyota nut-case out there!

Although an Australian I have been living and working in the
Philippines for the past 4 years. Don't get much time to get off-road
recreationally but frequently need to as part of my job.
 Vehicle now sports the following:
 ARB bull bar
 IPF 130W driving lights
 Safari Snorkel
 Old Man Emu shocks
 Kaymar rear tyre carrier
 Finer Filter
Planning on installing a winch but need to upgrade the alternator
first.

I didn't know that. I watch them install it and look like a smooth
operation. It only took them less than 30 minutes to install. But maybe
because mine is Shortbed regular cab model.

Right, I checked into this any many people told me that
the "bolt-on" Dynomax systems required quite a bit of
modifications to get it to hang right (particularly on
Xtra-cabs). I didn't have time to mess with it, so I
paid $130 for the custom system and that includes
having it installed. If I would have had the time,
I probably would have gone the route you are referring to.

I agree with this assessment. I've heard quite a few instances where the
Downey U-joints break. If one decides to stay with IFS, one can either
by them from WCOR, or have them made on one's own. I found out from
another guy that the Transform buggy company sells race Lobro 930 cv's
for $75 each (regular 930's are about $10-15 less). Moser Engineering
can make the half shafts for about $395 (both). The adapter plates will
also have to be soured. Any competent machine shop could make those.

I have a quick question about my 87 toy's 22r engine. It has 178,000 miles on
it and runs great. The thing is, is that im gonna be going away to school
next year, and am going to need a reliable truck( i live in dallas, tx
school is in flint, Mi). I will have to commute about 6 times a year.
The way i see it i have a few options. they are:
1)rebuild the origonal engine
2)buy a new/rebuilt toy engine/transmition (could i swap in a toy v6???,
anybody done this????)
3)sell the truck (i am as emmbarest to write it as you are to read it) and get
something with less miles.
Do i have anyother choices? What would you do if you were in my situation?
How does everybody feel about swaping in an engine/transimtion from another
manufacture (such as chevy). i really dont want to sell the toy but i would
rather see it go to an owner that would treat it right then see it rust out in
flint. What would u do if you were in my situation?????

A freind of mine requested and got a palindrome phone number from the
phone company here in Albuq. I saw it and said it was very cool and
he said that very few people ever realize it. Heck most people don't
even know what a palindrome is. BTW, when I told him your license
plate, he loved it. He said he hadn't seen that before.

I've put in 6 of them now, pretty easy (only two in my truck). Remove
the third member, remove the ring gear and the spider gears (mark
everything first), put in the locker in a box, put it back together and
wheel!
I can provide a more detailed explanation if you'd like but basically
you need a torque wrench, set of hand tools, punch, and a vice is
helpful....

A vice is VERY helpful. I had to go out and buy one for my dad (I was
doing it while on vacation in Oregon, and he didn't have one) I tried
everything but couldn't remove/retorque the ring gear bolts w/out it.
Also, heating the ring gear is definately a good tip...the instructions
that came w/ the locker were very good.
on another note, i am on my second lock-right now. I broke the first one
in august in baja (rounded dog-teeth). i confirmed it was not an install
error and pro-gear in san diego gave me another one, which i have yet to
have any problems w/.

I had never even seen the inside of a differential before and it only
took me 4.5hrs. (had time to think on the throne). Just read and
reread and reread the instructions and try to get the section out of the
Toy manual on 3rd member removal and installation. Once you pull the
heavy thing out its all downhill.
Hint....ping companion flange on driveshaft, ping bearing caps, dont
try to ping ring gear (you cant its too hard) just mark the ring gear
and carrier. Use a propane torch to heat the ring gear to remove it
from carrier. Heat to install it also. But you may be able to install
without removal on a 92. Taco's have to be pulled.
Any Q's mail me and I will try to help.
G'Luck its not too terribly hard. Also invest in Loctite, its a must
for all fasteners.

Something is wrong. My V6 gets over 18MPG no matter how I press it. I
have gotten over 20 hiway, but in town and stoplight indies aren't real
efficient.

 Your only getting 10-11 MPG??!!
even w/ the v6 that is ridiculous. I bought mine new (60 miles) and i get 20-25
MPG (4 cyl.) and always have...I now have 10,000miles since August.

I bought an 85 Toy it is a bedless, gutted ext cab with a 305, TH350 and 203 transfer.
I keep changing my idea as to what to swap to but after looking real good at the 85 last night I have decided
to ditch the 305 tranny and transfer and go with a Buick 231 (unless). I came close to slapping on some
fullside 1/2, 3/4 or even 1 Ton Chevy axles and still might if I find a good deal before I sell the motor. But
I want something I can drive to events and such. My 83 runs great offroad now but the cab is fading (rusted
floorboards)and the frame is bent way out of shape go figure..." rolled 3 times, jumped more times than I can
count and don,t foget the runnning down sandy muddy trails at 40+ mph (oops didn't realize that puddle had a 2
foot rut in it) yeppie:)!!!!!"
The 85 is gutted but has no rust to speak of and only needs some carpet, seats and a little dash work to make
it cumfy, plus it has air and I have a spare compressor in the garage somewhere.
A friend gave me a two piece Downey TH350 adapter so I'll be going with that tranny, unfortunatly third gear is
only 1:1 so I need to lower the gears to give me acceptable rpms at highway speeds, hence back to 4.10's. I
plan on making up for the higher first gear by doing a dual transfer case and a low stall coverter, I have a
couple spare transfers in the garage so that ought help out on the dual setup cost. As always $$$ is the
factor which is causing me to keep the Toy stuff I just can't stand the idea of spending money for some decent
Chevy axles then having to rebuild them and get lockers to boot not too mention having to get new wheels to fit
an eight or ten lug axle and the fact that they will stick out way too far, ( that could be nice sometimes).
So like I said before unless I can come across a good deal on axles I'm going to have to stick with the Toy
stuff.
I suppose I'm rambling sorry to give your such a lengthy answer. I keep going over and over this stuff in my
head to make sure that I'm not wasting money or working against myself and wind up with the kind of ride I'm
looking for.

My opinion? The timing chain is easy to do after the first time. Its not that hard
the first time either. I would think the double would only be worth it if you were
running some beefy performance cam. I couldn't bring myself to spend the $500.
Spend the bucks on a 'genuine Toyota' single.

One of the best and one used by many web pro's is PhotoImpact with
Web Extensions from Ulead. (http://www.ulead.com). At one point you
could download a free trial. The full version with the CD runs about
$90 at most computer stores. A new version 4 is due out or is
already out. It's image optimization is some of the best around.
Another good program is Paint Shop Pro. You can find links to it at

Hope this helps,

Hello everyone. I'm going to jump the gun and ask a question before I even
do my bio.
My brother and I recently bought an '89 4runner V-6 truck, but there is no
motor in it. In searching for a motor (wow $$$), the most reasonable I have
found locally is a 60k mile V-6 from a '92 2wd pickup. I have already been
told that the oil pan is different for a 4wd. Are there any other
differences I need to be aware of. Most importantly would be wiring or
computer differences. I have the computer for this '89 and plan to use it
with the new motor. Any past experiences would be much appreciated.
thanks,
David
