Baja 2000 Road Conditions Ensenada to El Rosario

Gas and fish tacos haven’t been a problem so far, and as we pull in to El Rosario traffic, everything about the trip have been smooth sailing thus far. The usual drug interdiction checkpoint south of Ensenada was nearly empty, but will likely be busy later in the day as the mass exodus to Cabo gets underway.

Leaving Rosario, we made it to the corner before the Emergency services interdiction checkpoint stopped us for the traditional donation. While gringos in the states can’t imagine being flagged down and stopped to “donate” toward an ambulance fund, you have to understand that out here medical help is awfully sparse, and a few bucks here may well save someone’s life – perhaps even yours. Don’t be cheap.

Along with the donation to the cause, a few ORC “Steekers” brought a few smiles to the kids faces; what had to be a 60 year old senorita wanted a couple of her own. Who are we to argue? Steekers for everybody!

Speeking of Steekers, we are noticing a pretty strange phenomena.. . .

It seems that the legend of Bob Yen is alive and well from the TJ border to at least El Rosario. We must have seen at least 30-40 “Bob Yen” stickers plastered across storefronts, road signs, agua tanks, and even adorning a few chase crew bumpers. We’ve documented these collectors’ items via the magic of the digital camera, and will soon post the evidence.

Although our buddy Bob was reported to be back in the states sitting out the B2K, it appears that he’s apparently down here after all, promoting his latest website.

Traveling in pairs offers a lot of advantages, and having radio communication only adds to the convenience. While the safety offered by a radio is hard to beat, ORC’s Fidel Gonzales took up “Broadcasting” and decided to call his new station “KTDF”. Don’t ask. It’s an inside joke, but then again, so is Fidel. . .

The adventure continues - K 82 and counting.......
