PCVLvcos Racing Team Victopiqus at Tecate SCORE Baia 2000 The No. 270 PCl/LYCOS
Racing Ford Protruck of Scott Steinberger, Jay Heichart and Dave Cardona won the
SCORE Protruck class in this year's Tecate SCORE Baja 2000 presented by Autozone,
finishing 13th overall. They completed the 1,720-mile Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas
run in 40 hours and 35 minutes, six and one-half hours ahead of the second place
class finishers.
The team felt it was a near flawless race, with their Ford truck finishing in
great conditie considering the incredible terrain it traversed down the Baja
California peninsula. They cow the 1,720 mileg with rn average speed of 41.406
miles per hour.
"We dumped a wheel in a crater," explalned driver Jay Reichart.
"We were pretty lucky. Pretty soon a Mexican fellow came along and with our
tow strap was able to pull us out. We got stuck twice, the first time cost us
eight minutes, the second time 12 minutes. There were some narly washes that
could eat a wheel. At La Purisima (near San Isidro, Mexico), we were ninth,
right behind Bob Shepard. By Constitution, we were 20 minutes down. I got into
an area where I was booking it. We looked down at the GPS and we were going 104
mph. All of a sudden, we passed Shepard, and he was pulled over on the side of
the road. After that, I let off a little bit because we knew it was three hours
back to the next truck. We even stopped at a BFG Checkpoint and did a 15-minute
pit stop and fluid check."
Scott Steinbrger was the starting driver for the PCl/LYCOS entry, driving the
first 600 miles from Ensenada, Mexico south, then teaming with Heichart as a
co-driver for the last 200 miles. Dane Cardone was the second driver, taking on
the middle 350-plus miles from Bahia de Los Angeles to La Purisima. Reichart
drove the final 725 miles.
