I own a 1999 ML 320 and I have a crack in my right catalytic converter at the weld. My VIN is on the recall list but NOT on the VMI (Vehicle Master Inquiry), therefore, my converter will not be replaced by the local dealer. Has anyone out there been able to get their VIN added to the VMI? How many of you have had this problem and what did you do about it? Any help would be appreciated as this is a very costly repair that should be covered under the recall. The recall states that the vehicles should be INSPECTED and the converter REPLACED, if needed. My ML sounds like a race car.

I've already had my left catalytic converter replaced and it was very costly. I've been told the 1999 ML320 was recalled for this problem. What is the Vehicle Master Inquiry? The converter was replaced back in October and now the left one is going. Does anyone know why only certain ML320 are covered?????

When I took my 1999 ML 320 to an independent Mercedes Benz mechanic for an inspection, I have learned that my left catalytic converter was cracked. When contacted the MB dealer I was told that on one of my previous visits to the dealer, my catalytic converter was already replaced in 2005 (I was not told that at the time) under the recall campaign so I am not covered this time. Now, the replaced catalytic converter is cracked again (I should say wide open at the weld) and it would be a very costly to replace this one. I have decided to repair it by welding the crack. I have paid extra money for the work to make sure the welding is done properly so I will pass the smog test next year. Big $$$$$ saver!

Re last post. I have a 99 ML320 and my catalytic converter is also cracked on the seam. I have a private mechanic that suggested that he weld it. I was looking on line to see if that is routinely done. Let me know how it works for you. Also glad I got on line about this, I'm going to check in the morning to see if I can get it replaced on recall first -- then welding will be plan B.
