There&s a new book, ?A Thousand Barrels A Second? by Peter Tertazkian, that paints a very scary scenario about the oil industry and energy options in the future. When I read such books or the daily headlines in newspapers or in news magazines, I keep reminding myself that bad news sells.

As 1999 began, the headlines looked familiar. In the previous two years, parts of the nation had been gripped by major snow and ice storms. "Storm Pummels Full Depth of Middle U.S.", said The New York Times on January 3rd. "Storm Triggers Travel Chaos", said USA Today on January 4th.

Occasionally I get email or snail mail that takes me to task for not sufficiently loving Mother Earth. This mail often comes from the young who are deeply offended by facts that run counter to the twelve years of elementary and high school Green indoctrination they have received and whatever tripe they are being taught in colleges these days.

One of the great benefits of a free press is that it affords everyone an opportunity to access the news about the events of our times, but one of its great drawbacks is that it permits groups with hidden agendas to mask their goals by manipulating public opinion and policy. With freedom comes the responsibility to be not merely informed, but to be able to discern truth from propaganda.

I would not want to be George W. Bush even if I did get free lodgings in the White House, free rides in Air Force One, and a chance to hang out with a lot of big shots. Being President has to be one of the most thankless jobs. Then there's all those morons going around saying you're too stupid to chew gum and walk a straight line. These are usually the same people who won't publicly criticize Congressman Gary Condit and have just added a couple of million-dollar pork barrel projects to the budget so the folks back home can enjoy a bike path. Named after them, of course.
