As the summer draws to a close I've been thinking about some of the battles we'll be fighting over the coming months to keep our public lands open to motorized recreation and other forms of multiple use. I've picked what I perceive to be the top five issues currently pending in the arena of multiple use versus the bad guys.

In the last couple years of his presidency, the most corrupt president in history, William Clinton, tried to pull off the largest land grab of all time as the crown jewel of his "legacy". This grand scheme, known as the Roadless Rule, was Clinton's plan to lock up over 58 million acres of National Forest land, in effect creating 58 million acres of de facto wilderness. He was able to do this with his flagrant abuse of the Antiquities Act with the designation of huge National Monuments, and made an almost successful attempt to put more land off limits to multiple use with the proposed Roadless Rule.

There's a lot of nonsense being put forth lately by anti-access groups and individuals that sympathize with them. That's right, nonsense, stuff that in no way should be taken seriously, but the greens have so much power that they have scared many folks into believing that what they are saying can really come true.

Quite a summer so far here in the four corners. We have fires burning all around us, and all the smoke seems to like to settle right here, got it blowing in from Arizona and running downhill in the Animas River Valley from Colorado.
