Roll Bar Details

December 1, 2004

Here's a few different views of my roll bar. I run a soft top, called a hood in England, during the Summer. However, when the weather turns frigid, I switch over to a hard top. This roll bar will fit underneath the hard top, and also provides a solid mounting point for my retracting shoulder harness'. The bar was designed and executed by Roverworks, and is welded into collars which are in turn welded to the frame. If you want to remove your roll bar when the hard top is up, you could bolt the bar into the collars. Mine started life this way, but I didn't like the way it wobbled when I used it to pull myself into the rear bed.

Scotty Conversion

December 1, 2004

I have not personally undertaken one of these conversions (although I have often considered it). However, I once owned a '67 109 SW which had a Chev 235 l-6 in it and can attest the the joy of the performance (without noticing any particular penalty in fuel economy compared with what I have heard with the Land-Rover f-head 2.6l 6-cyl). That one was not a Scotty conversion, however.

Vacuum Advance

December 1, 2004

Sorry Ace, the vacuum advance is used as an econmy measure only... The flame propogation in the chamber that has been subject to a sub-atmospheric induction is such that it can use an early start point for ignition.....The dynamic compression ratio is MUCH lower than static under these condition and will withstand more total advance.....OK in >English.. the fuel burns slower when there is less of it (and air) in the cyl....soooo you gotta light the match sooner if you want the stuff to burn and reach max.pressure at the proper time in the cycle..Ifin' ya' don't,the pressure builds after the optimum time and all the push is wasted ,sometimes out the exhaust!(if you don't believe this, retard the time and FEEL the exhaust pressure at the tailpipe...Leave it this way and watch the manifold get red hot!)

Ace Ventura Land Rovers

December 1, 2004

A recent email said the Ace Ventura MURDERED Rovers. Well in the we must save them all way of thinking maybe they did. But the real story is that all but two of the 88's supplied to the movie company were utter garbage! How do I know you ask, well I'm the one who built them. When the call came in from the movie company, we had two weeks to put together 5 88's. My memories of those two weeks are a blur of welding on flat steel rear cross members, cut to look like a real cross member from the back, trying to get engines to run just a few more miles, making entire door bottoms and bulkhead floors from bondo and cardboard, paint jobs that covered everything, etc, etc. Two of the 88's were even RHD versions that were converted to LHD. Man those trucks were a mess. Three of them still survive, a gentleman in SC bought them.
