FROM SOMEWHERE IN THE FOUR CORNERS

April 1, 2003

Do you know what makes living in the Southwest worthwhile? Do you know what it is really all about? Autumn! Late September and October, sometimes into early November in Northwest New Mexico have to be experienced to really understand what I am talking about.

There is yet another species whose existence is endangered on BLM land throughout the west. It's not another weed, small furry animal or reptile, either. It is the "open" land management designation that is being threatened, and it is disappearing right under our noses. Large areas of the west that have for many years been managed as "open" are receiving new designations under revised Land and Resource Management Plans (LRMP), the designation of "limited to existing roads or trails" or even "closed to motorized vehicles" is rapidly replacing the "open" designation.

Optimism!

We Have a Right to Be There

"We have a right to be there." Well, yes?maybe?I suppose! That seemingly truthful statement made recently by one of the major competition rock crawling promoters is not as simple as it may first appear.

FROM SOMEWHERE IN THE FOUR CORNERS

December 1, 2002

Sometime during the summer of 1999 near the town of Lyons, CO, not far from Rocky Mountain National Park, a series of events started that has since become something of a legend among four wheelers concerned with land use issues. The events I am referring to concern a dispute surrounding a little known road known by locals as the Barking Dog Road or Trail. Much has been said and a little bit has been written over the intervening 3 ? years during which this story has unfolded and it is my intention to finally set the full story, up to this point, down in an understandable format. Names of many of the people involved will be left out (including my main source of information) due to ongoing or upcoming legal actions, but a couple of the principles' names are known to everyone familiar with the story so they will be referred to by name.

THE REBIRTH OF COMMON SENSE

November 1, 2002

This month's column is a few days late because I wanted to wait until after the elections to write it. And since this column is opinion, and not news, let me take this opportunity to say November 5, 2002 will go down as one of the greatest days in the history of the United States and the Republican Party. Personally, I couldn't be happier, and hopefully you feel the same way, because this nation and specifically items in the arena of land use issues will most likely get a huge boost from what happened on election day.

Avalanche OHV Ranch: A Dream Becomes Reality

On October 27, 2002 a dream which Steve and Jen Rumore have had for quite some time finally becomes reality with the opening of Avalanche OHV Ranch. The Rumores, known best for their business Avalanche Engineering of Bayfield, CO, builders of legendary competition four wheel drives such as the Snipers, recently purchased 832 acres of incredible mesa top land straddling the New Mexico/Colorado state line for the purpose of opening a state of the art OHV Park.
