A swirl of excitement has recently surrounded our EMPI Inch Pincher / Project Elf Class 11 racer. With our trusty little Bug now serving as the centerpiece for our fight against autism through DIRTsports magazine's partnership with the Cure Autism Now (CAN) foundation.

In the last issue of DIRTsports, we followed along with the crew at DragonFire Racing as they installed one of the coolest long-travel Rhino kits around. For now, it's time for additional power, torque and a trick safety cage - all courtesy of those pesky instigators at DragonFire Racing.

We've got an engine that rips and suspension that can get it to the ground. So it's about time to start getting the "bling" end of things taken care of.

If you'll recall, in last month's issue of DIRTsports, our staff of maniacs wanted to find out firsthand about why the Yamaha Rhino was turning the off-road nation on its collective ear. We had seen them everywhere with people having a great time riding around the pits and dunes; all just enjoying a true revolution of affordable off-road fun.

There is no doubt about it: Project Elf is turning out to be a huge hit. We hear about it nearly everywhere we go now and it's nice to know that our little VW has a bunch of fans out there.

Unless it's an A-arm car, just about every Volkswagen-based off-road car uses a variation of the front suspension on our Project Elf. It's a textbook example of 1930s suspension design that employs a system of kingpins and link pins to articulate; hence, the king-and-link name. The system proved so reliable that Volkswagen maintained the basic system from the Beetle's birth until 1966, when it updated the design to use ball joints. While it's no high water mark for geometry, it's robust in stock form and responds well to appropriate modifications.
