The Dashboard

December 1, 2004

Music is important to me. I spent a lot of time thinking about how to get a decent stereo mounted in the Rover, even if purists scoff at the idea. I had a pair of ADS 320i speakers kicking around from my old Rabbit GTi, and decided to find a way to make them work. Here's how I mounted the speakers and head end, as well as a few other toys. I'm currently looking at ways to get some rear fill, without further compromising the load space.

Gearbox Renovation (and further down tips on removing a gearbox)

December 1, 2004

The gearbox renovation isn't too bad if you've got time and patience. The tips I've learned that I can think of off hand are: Remove the unit in sections - Overdrive, transfer + Hi-Lo unit together, then main box. This way you don't need a hoist (I'm 132 lbs and I could do it) and it makes lining up the pilot shaft a lot easier on reassembly.

A few things on tire sizes and numbering

Starter Removal

December 1, 2004

With the heat shield history, the starter (either the IIa or III-style) can be withdrawn up and out. Here's how (in less than 5 min.): 1) unbolt cable and the two bolts. 2) Withdraw unit, turn slightly and drop front end to rest between down pipe and frame rail. The Dyer gear shaft will just clear the upper inner of the bell housing hole. 3) Grab the shaft end and withdraw (up) between the exhaust manifold and bulkhead. 4) Go pop a cold one. Takes longer to explain it than it does to do it.

Transitional Series IIA, aka "Bugeye"

Headlights in the wings; crome headlight rings; wire, inverted T grill; 3 breakfast holes; stearing arms under the swivel ball; centrally located instruments; bulged sides

Stage 1 (SIII, 109", V8)

December 1, 2004

Unknown. An approximate upper bound is 58,000. This number is based upon a model that predicted the number of 109" built for the years in question. So 58,000 includes non-Stage I 109"s. I wouldn't be surprised if the true number is around 40,000
