Norm Lenhart is the Senior Editor for the Internet's largest off-road and outdoor recreational site, Off-Road.com. His work has appeared in a variety of newspapers, websites, and yes, even that bastion of liberalism, Time Magazine. The "Being Green column has sparked a flurry of hate mail, negative publicity throughout the "environmental community", and has resulted in several serious death threats being leveled against the author.

Mr. Lenhart is the co-author of the book "American Motorsports", and is currently driving a thorn into the sides of "environmentalists" in the Las Vegas area.

November 97 - "20 Questions to ask an "Environmentalist"

"Make a copy of these questions, print it out, and carry it in your OHV, bring it to land use meetings etc. The next time you are confronted with an enviro-zealot determined to shut you out of public lands, ask him / her the following questions....."

December 97 - "Eco Terror On The Rise"

"It would appear that the "non-violent civil disobedience protest" committed by Earth First! fits the FBI definition of terrorism. While that fact is sinking in, consider that a document exists called the "Reno Declaration of Non-Violence". It has been signed by over 500 "Wise Use" organizations, but not one environmental org. No EF!, no Sierra Club, no SUWA. I have but one question......."

January 98 -"Winning the War Against Misguided "Environmentalists"

"Join a local OHV club! Bring the fight to them in order to (God above I cant believe I'm going to say this) "Save our sport for Future Generations"...... Huh. I guess that wasn't so bad. In fact, it sounded "right". It WAS right. After all, WE know which so called "Future Generations" should be allowed to enjoy our public lands."

March 98 - "Stopping the "USFS Plan from Hell"

"We're all "off-roaders" in one way or another. From the kid playing with a Tonka truck in a sandbox, to an equestrian, to a rockcrawler on the Terminator. Yes even Mountain Bikers are off-roaders. It's just too bad that the largest Mountain Bike Assoc. forgot that when they hopped in bed with the Sierra Club."

April 98 - "Threats, Violence, Hate Speech & Terrorism"

"Unfortunately, people like Will here are all too common in today's "environmental movement", and that should scare the hell out of any sane person. Rather than live in fear of these fanatics, do something about them. Do not for one second assume that they are just blowing hot air. That could be a fatal mistake for you, and those you love."

May 98 - "Next stop, The Twilight Zone"

"Phones fly off the hook, fax machines ramp up, hard drives whirr, E-mail spams the net, and the enviro juggernaut springs into action. "Dave" slithers out of the room, presumably to rally a "non-organization" into stringing piano wire across the end of a runway, and pour sand into jet fuel. Mr. Nameplate asks for permission to go #1, and when denied, sits uncomfortably in his chair. "Free Willy" plays silently on the office propaganda box...er...TV, but the irony is lost on him."

June 98 - "Potatoe's First!"

"Here are some things to keep in mind about Potato's First! and some suggestions for being an active and effective Potato First!er: First of all, Potatoes First! is not an organization, but a movement. There are no members of Potatoes First!, only "Spuds". It is a belief in anal retention, or Deep Stupidity, and a practice of putting our delusions into action."

July 98 - "What is the "Wildlands Project" & Why should you care?"

"What if I said to you "I want to set aside 50% of the North American continent, put it TOTALLY off limits to humans, & call it "Turtle Island"? What If I said to you "That's not enough. I want "Buffer Zones" with only "limited human activity", ...and I want to create them from PRIVATE LAND, ....and that they must be managed with native biodiversity as a preeminent concern"? What if I said to you, "I will control, manage, etc. "Turtle Island" and these "Buffer Zones" based on the morality & ethics of "Deep Ecology "?

August 98 - "Eco Terrorism Rears it's Ugly Head Again?"

"The "Death Cube", a construction of spiked railroad ties placed into a freeway underpass by Mike Roselle & other members of Earth First, would have, if left undiscovered, certainly killed the first racer to hit it. Perhaps several more as well. The trap was placed in protest of the "Barstow to Vegas" motorcycle race. Since EF! couldn't stop the race by civilized methods, they resorted to acts of terrorism."

September 98 - "Mr. Lenhart's Neighborhood"

"The largest fear that any group has is to face an organized opponent, for with organization comes power. Power to think, power to act, and power to affect the course of change. Look no further than the GAGs (Green Advocacy Groups) that are hard at work every day in Washington."

October 98 - "Eco-Terrorism: Can It Happen To You?"

"And there good reader, is the whole point of Eco-terrorism. Make it too costly, or otherwise "expensive", to legally enjoy a legal activity, in a legally designated area. Make those who partake too afraid to return to the great outdoors, under the looming specter of "It can happen again, it can happen to me".

Earth First, Sierra Club, and other radical environmental orgs. call it "Civil Disobedience". The FBI has another definition...."

November 98 - "If I Were President"

"4 score and several years ago, our founding fathers set forth to provide "FUTURE GENERATIONS" with country based on 3 principles. Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. As a result, America became the most prosperous nation in the history of the world. Over the years, people across the planet came to our shores, fleeing oppression, whether political, religious, or otherwise, and built a new life....That was then.......This is now....."

December 98 - "How can I mock thee? Let me count the ways!"

"Rickii Rockett, drummer for the glam rock band "Poison", and outspoken animal rights / No Compromise activist has threatened to use the band's upcoming tour as a platform to further the animal rights cause, and campaign against Off-Road.com. What an audience consisting mostly of 80's type headbangers dressed in black leather will think of paying $30+ for a concert condemning their choice of dress remains to be seen. .......could be a real short tour."

January 99 - "Willful Ignorance"

"Here at Off-Road.com, we are proud...let me say that again "Proud" to be associated with the fine folks at The Blue Ribbon Coalition. But alas......it seems that some people like to hold it over our heads as if it were something we should be "ashamed" of....As if we were allying ourselves with white supremacists, Islamic terrorists, or the minions of Farrakhan."

February 99 - Give Them The Respect They Deserve

"It's about time that all of us "Evil Anti-Environmentalists" stop trying to win the approval of a group of people that will, regardless of what we do, consider us pond scum. As yourself this...Why do we waste our time trying to win the approval of Eco groups for our activities? It ain't gonna happen."

March 99 - "Off-Road Political Action Committees"

"When I heard about the intent of the American Motorcyclist Associations activities to seek out Non-Governmental Organization status, I have to say I had one of those "DUH!" moments. It seemed like a no brainier, yet until now, no one had done it. While the LUN and off-roaders at large may not be geared toward such an outcome in and of itself, there is one thing that we ARE "designed" (for lack of a better term) for, and that's a PAC - a Political Action Committee."

April 99 - "Studies in Contradiction"

"There are seemingly no end to the ways that "Green" Socialists come up with to vilify outdoor recreationalists, businesses, even whole industries. We read it in the papers,, and on the web. We watch it on TV. We listen to it in our cars on the way to and from work. Our children get it from cartoons like "Captain Planet" and school texts that portray humans as destroyers of the earth. If there's a problem in the world, "human induced" is the default condition - regardless of any pesky little things - like "facts" for example. They just get in the way of a good guilting of America after all."

May 99 - "War is Hell! - Another Open Letter to the Sierra Club"

"Wait a second....... Overpopulation? Citizen's rights to PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT??? What about citizens rights to BE CITIZENS????? You know, the right to LIVE for their own sake???? Are you saying that we must only be allowed to exist in limited numbers, and only then to serve the planet???? WHAT ABOUT SAVING THE ECOSYSTEM IN KOSOVO FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS????"

June 99 - "What Kind of Person Reads Time Magazine? Its not who you'd think...or is it?"

"After all, the Sierra Club and like minded "saviors of the earth" have gone out of thier way to avoid the words "Off-Road.com" or "Norm Lenhart" when refering to us either in print, or one of their many "Sierra Club Action Alerts". Why? Because it validates us as a very real threat to their eco-guilt powered empire. Now "Time", supposedly one of the most "influential" and "progressive" publications in the world, goes out and tells everybody exactly who we are...."

July 99 - "Stupidity By Any Other Name..."

"With that out of the way, let's drive our freely chosen, purchased, and owned SUV's down the beaten path to a place I like to call "Mr. Lenhart's Neighborhood". In my neighborhood, it's considered rude to lay your greasy paws on someone's property. That was a lesson that Granny taught me REAL EARLY in life. Defacing someone else's property is considered illegal, and grounds for prosecution, if not "persecution" - with extreme prejudice."

August 99 - "Welcome to Amerika Comrade!"

"There's a bigger picture to the whole "environmental" movement, one that often slips under the radar of the average American. While I've touched on it in some of my previous columns here at Off-Road.com, I'd like to dedicate this month's "Being Green" column to presenting you with some cold, hard facts about the political agenda of today's "Environmentalist". Or perhaps I should say the "Environmental agenda of today's politician".

September 99 - "Confessions of an Extremist - The Evil That "I" Do"

"The term "environmentalist", once used to describe those who cared for, and worked to make our planet a better and more healthy place to live, has been bastardized by a group of power hungry liberal control freaks who have determined that the public at large is to stupid - to "evil" to be allowed to enjoy something called "freedom". To the Liberal mind, people not marching lockstep with their ideology and "vision" of how things "should" be, people who choose to live outside their "Third Way" must be dealt with quickly and decisively. They are quickly, and repeatedly labeled "Extremists".

October 99 - "Barry Clausen"

For some of you, the name "Barry Clausen" may be unfamiliar. Others will recognize him from his eternal battles with Earth First!.... and they are legendary in the timber industry circles, I assure you. In this month's "Being Green" column, I'd like to introduce you to the big "C" himself, and welcome him to the pages of Off-Road.com.

The truth is that the inability of the various landuse groups, clubs and associations to forgo their differences, unite under a common banner, and make a direct, intense, and politically incorrect assault on the forces of socio-communistic inspired "environmentalism" have left us - you and I - as architects of our own undoing. "WE", you and yes, "I" have been mis-targeting an extremely high percentage of our energies at the wrong damn target.

Resolution #1 - I resolve to do everything within my power to prove to people that compromise with the "greener than thou" crowd will only result in further loss of land, further loss of rights, and the eradication of our sport as we know it.

"I cannot believe what I'm hearing" said he. "Not one week ago, I handed you the GPS coordinates for dozens and dozens of roads in that area!! What do you mean that it's "Roadless"? There's roads everywhere! What did you do with the data I gave you? Throw it out?"

For those who don?t know, Paulie Elrich sang the horror of ?global cooling? until it became unpopular and proven false, did his best to strike fear into the hearts of the planet over the hell of overpopulation (starvation, disease, economic collapse ad nauseam) in the 70?s , and made the switch to global warming guru when 1980 dawned on a country fat and happy.

Does anyone notice a pattern here or is it just Me?

We don't need some self-appointed "expert" to tell us what we should buy. You build the products we want, we'll buy them. Simple. Let's cut out the middleman. Isn't it strange that the best selling vehicle the world over is a truck, despite millions of Eco-friendly dollars telling us that they are evil gas hogs that are destroying the planet? On the day that someone in the automotive ad world figures out that "The American People" aren't going to buy a Yugo instead of an Excursion, no matter how often the Sierra Club tells us to, the battle will be won. On the day that the politico du' jour realizes that there are far more voters concerned with food, shelter and clothing, than in the latest invented ecopocalypse that will surely never come to pass, that victory will be set in stone. But, perhaps, most importantly, on the day that the average American remembers how to think for himself, and not rely on someone else - i.e., the collective "Media" to think and make decisions for him / her, that victory will endure forevermore.

Too many years ago, a bunch of apathetic off-roaders figured the famous and popular "Someone Else" (address unavailable at press time) would take an hour out of their miserable existence, and go pull a lever when it came time to exercise the most important right we have - the right to vote.

One has to sit back and wonder - "How did America go from Regan's "Shining City on the Hill", to Clinton's "San Francisco Bath House" in only 8 short years? The answer, my friends, lies in the mainstream media who have sold out their obligation as an honest source of news and information, and a hoard of Democrats enthralled by Clinton's abuse of power, and drunk on the idea that they too can follow his example, free of repercussion.
