Hoppy hadn't been sleeping well as of
late . The enormity of the past weeks trials had finally begun to take a toll on
the little rabbit, and it had begun to show. He had grown distant toward his
family, and even though Mommy Rabbit had tried to help , things seemed to be
getting worse as time went on. Something would have to give soon. Hoppy got up and hopped outside their desert burrow, staring into the full
moon of the night sky. It was getting close to winter now, and through his fur,
he could feel the chill of the cool desert air. Taking a deep breath, he hopped
up on a large rock and, once again began to ponder whether or not they would
ever find a home where the Bad Humans would only be a distant , awful
memory. He thought about his little bunnys , growing up in a world where the
humans were herded like cattle into small areas of land, while the vast
amount of the earth remained forever untouched. It made no sense to him. But
then, the Bad Humans at the "Syonara Club" and "Earth
Fist" rarely made any sense at all . If the Bad Humans finally got
their way,?.Hoppy shuddered at the thought, and grew colder still.. He knew
that when too many animals were kept in one area, they always got sick, and
eventually died . He doubted humans would fare any better. Hoppy's grandfather had told him many stories when he was just a little bunny
, about Good Humans , dressed alike, with big fire sticks, that went far
across the big water to make sure that their land wouldn't be taken away from
them. Grandpa Bunny said that many of these humans came back in wooden
boxes, to be buried in the ground, as was their way at the end of their life.
"These were strange creatures", he thought. "How is this any
different than what is happening to them today ", he thought, "cant
they see" ? Hoppy had heard the Humans call their land "America,
the land of the free", and he suspected that that's where many of the off-roaders
lived . But the Bad Humans lived there too.. "Why should the Bad
Humans be allowed to make all the rules" ? It was all too confusing for
the little rabbit, and his head began to hurt. Returning to his bed, sleep quickly overtook the befuddled rabbit, but it
was, again, an unrestful one at best. As his mind traveled through the land of
dreams, he thought of his old home in the forest and of his youth spent playing
by the creek near the old farm with his friend "Benny the Beaver". As
they had grown older, the Bad Humans had come to the old farm, and
Hoppy's mother had fled with him, running for their very lives. Many of the
other creatures had also fled the destruction that had been wrought there , but
not all of them made it . The Bad Humans had "Liberated" the farmers herd, and set
fire to the old barn. In the chaos and commotion that followed, Hoppy's
father had been trampled to death in a stampede of mindlessly fleeing cows. It
was a sight he would never forget. He had watched in helpless horror as a cows
hoof came down and stepped right -through- his father, sending an explosion of
blood, spraying from the dying rabbit's mouth and eyes. The sickly sound of
splintering bone, that sound of his fathers death, had stayed with him all these
years. Many of the Birds and Mice who lived in the barn had not gotten out in
time, and Hoppy grimaced and turned in his sleep, remembering the shrieks and
squeals as their flesh was slowly consumed in the ensuing inferno. Their ashen
bodies would never roam the grassy fields, nor soar in the warm blue skies
again. And Benny ? He too had fallen victim to the senseless crusade of the Bad
Humans. Benny had died recently when the Bad Humans had blown up his dam, so
that the resulting flood would destroy a road. As the animals had fled the Bad
Humans latest siege on the forest, they had come across the shattered remains of
what had once been a living creature. The pieces of Benny's lifeless body had
been scattered ?? Hoppy awoke suddenly, gasping for breath ; eyes wide and
body shaking. Mommy rabbit held him tightly and told him "Its over Hoppy,
It was just another bad dream. It's OK , It's over". Hoppy sobbed at the
memories the dream had forced him to relive. In time , he had calmed down and
Mommy rabbit had went to get him some cool water. For a time, they sat, with
only the sound of the wind and the distant howl of a lone coyote, to break the
uneasy silence. "But it's not over" he finally said.. "They're
blinded by their greed. They care about no one but themselves". Mommy
could see just how much it disturbed him. "Remember the of-roaders and
all the Good Humans out there Hoppy. It won't be long before they stop those Bad
Humans from doing their hateful things. Even now, they're making their
voices heard" . I know" said Hoppy, "but how many more animals
will suffer before the Bad Humans are stopped ? How many more Good Humans will
loose everything they have" ? "How many Mommy" ?
