It was more than four years ago
when I received a phone call from a friend of mine. It was Guy
Petersen.
"Hey, what's going on Guy? The
last time I saw you it was a cold, rainy day in Lucerne, and you
were going nowhere fast after nailing that ditch in Soggy Dry Lake.
I zapped a stream of WD-40 into the wet ignition of your 5-1600
car, and that's the last I saw of you. How'd you guys finish the
race anyway?"
He responded, getting
straight to business: "I'm thinking of putting together this show,
an off-road show for the entire community . . . I was thinking
something along the lines of the Off Road Expo. What do you
think?"
Needless to say, he caught me off
guard. In fact, it was that vision, the fusing together of the
entire "off-road community," which ignited the interest of many and
bolted them into action for his common cause.
The following year, in October 2000, one of the largest years
in off-road racing history, that the inaugural Off Road Expo
jettisoned into the hearts of off-roaders everywhere. They came
together from near and far to the Fairplex in Pomona, California to
share what instantly became known as "The Greatest Off-Road Show On
Earth."
Imagine a place where legends like
Rob MacCachren, Walker Evans, Curt LeDuc, Ivan Stewart, Bruce
Meyers crowd into the isles with friends, vendors, shops, families,
entrepreneurs, fabricators and key manufacturers in the automotive
industry.
The vision was much greater than
any one person could imagine. It took an entire community to create
the Off Road Expo.
Join us, Off-Road.com,
as we venture through the isles of legends, friends, family and the
latest in off-road technology, this Saturday and Sunday, October 5
and 6, 2002.
Contrary to previous reports,
we won't have a mega booth with Trophy Trucks and live web cams as
we've had in the past, but we will be there nevertheless, covering
the show like no other publication can. Off-Road.com founder Pat Chicas, Dodge Editor Tim "Desertbull"
Sanchez, and myself, the Managing Editor, will see you
there.
