Does Lycos Realize What They Are Supporting?

Do they have any idea at all? Picture this.......You're up one night searching the web for info on your off-road vehicle. We've all been there, & with a growing amount of information on the World Wide Web, there's always a new page with new info to be found.

Rather than go with "what's hot today", you go with a proven search device like the Lycossearch engine. It's a powerful tool, and a popular one, used by tens of thousands of off-roaders around the world. But as you get to the Lycos page, something looks a little different, and on the surface, even "noble".

"Lycos is pleased to join with the EnviroLink Network in bringing you the information you need to help save the planet."

We all know that many of today's companies have jumped on the environmental bandwagon. The PR value of "environmentally friendly" carries a lot of weight in today's marketplace, and the use of it's mantle often translates into cubic dollars for the companies involved. Once in a while however, the quest for environmental rightousness leads corporate America down a primrose path, and straight into the "wrong part of the forest". Such is the case with the recent alliance between search engine giant Lycos, and the radical environmental web haven, Envirolink.

Now before we begin, there are a few things you should know about Lycos. Lycos is a publicly held company, traded on NASDAQ under symbol "LCOS". The majority shareholder is CMG Information Systems, at "http://www.cmgi.com". The Lycos, executive bios are available on "http://www.lycos.com/lycosinc/bios.html".

In plain English, the company is owned by stockholders, people like you & me. Many of these stockholders also own stock in companies that are the so called "sworn enemies" of Envirolink & the organizations it houses. Companies in the chemical, mining, petroleum, forestry, and related industries. Hmmmm......

Further, Lycos itself is a great supporter of NASCAR / Busch Grand National racing. You've likely seen their logo on the in-car cameras, or trackside. Their website currently carries an ad for the Barnes & Noble "NASCAR Sweepstakes" where you can win a place on pit row at the "Winston 500". It gives one pause........
  • Doesn't it strike you as odd that a company that makes it's money, in part from motorsports, has allied itself with a group who count amongst their goals, the elimination of the internal combustion engine?
  • Doesn't it strike you as odd that stockholders, people who make their living off capitalism & industrialized society, are funding groups who are actively working to eliminate those concepts entirely?
  • Doesn't it strike you as odd that radical environmental groups, people who proclaim industrialization & capitalism are the root of all evil, are knowingly profiting from products & activities that they claim "rape the land & destroy the atmosphere"?

At best, someone in the hallowed halls of Lycos didn't quite think through this decision, and it's likely that the shareholders are unaware of what their dollars are supporting. At worst, this is the height of hypocrisy.

From the Lycos Web page........

"If you need to know more about any environmental topic, visit the EnviroLink Library for the most comprehensive collection of environmental information available on the internet."

Well, lets do that. Are they the "environmentally conscious" organization they make themselves out to be? Lets have a look at what Envirolink is all about. These links are to organizations & pages hosted by Envirolink. These are among the statements, methods, actions, photos etc. that Lycos refers to on it's webpage as a "comprehensive collection of environmental information". Where applicable, there is associated commentary from other persons & websites, clearly marked by their URL. It is for you the reader to decide what, if any of this has to do with Lycos "saving the planet".
Earth First! Hosted by Envirolink

Examples of Earth First! "environmentalism"

" To begin with, we do not believe that it is enough to preserve some of our remaining wilderness. We need to preserve it all, and it is time to recreate vast areas of wilderness in all the planet's ecosystems: identify key areas, close roads, remove developments, and reintroduce extirpated wildlife. It is not enough to oppose the construction of new dams. It is time to free our shackled rivers and tear down Hetch Hetchy, Glen Canyon, New Melones, Tellico and other concrete monstrosities. ......

" While many environmental groups are members of the American political establishment and essentially adopt the anthropocentric (human-centered) world view of industrial civilization, we say the ideas and manifestations of industrial civilization are anti-Earth, anti-woman, and anti-liberty. We are developing a new biocentric paradigm based on the intrinsic value of all natural things: Deep Ecology. Earth First! believes in wilderness for its own sake.

Lobbying, lawsuits, letter writing and research papers are important and necessary. But they are not enough. Earth First!ers also use confrontation, guerrilla theater, direct action and civil disobedience to fight for wild places and life processes. And while we do not condone or condemn monkeywrenching, ecotage, or other forms of property destruction, we do present a forum for the exchange of ideas on creative opposition to the juggernaut of "progress," including ideas about monkeywrenching. Examples of HSA "environmentalism"

http://www.envirolink.org/orgs/HSA/tactics/sabfish.html

"The number of sab (sabotage) groups including angling in their activities is increasing. On the whole anglers are less likely to get pleasure out of the suffering they cause than hunters and enjoy instead the mindlessness of outwitting a fish into impaling itself on a hook, they don't tend to be inherently violent. This is a bonus if you are a small group, as you can sab more anglers than you might want to confront if they were all lood crazed terrier boys. The other thing about sabbing angling, is that it can form a satisfying end to a day, after dealing with a hound pack. Angling is Britain's most popular bloodsport and is responsible for causing pain, stress, fear and death to thousands of millions of fish every year. Everyone can identify with the terror of the majestic stag or wily fox when hunted for miles, but slimy, voiceless fish don't have the same appeal. Please don't let yourselves be open to accusations of speciesism and give all living creatures equal consideration. "

From Animal rights groups go too far
http://www.carnell.com/environment_health/animal_rights/ar001.html
By
Elisabeth Carnell

"PETA gets a lot of support from people because it successfully hides some of its extremist beliefs. A large number of those who contribute to PETA are pet owners rightfully concerned about animal abuse. Little do they know that PETA advocates eliminating what it calls "companion animals." According to Ingrid Newkirk, "pet ownership is an absolutely abysmal situation brought about by human manipulation." Of course this means eliminating the use of guide dogs for the blind and macaques who are trained to care for paraplegics. PETA spokesperson Kathy Guillermo told a radio audience, "I'm against using guide dogs," and Newkirk has said, "(In) a perfect society, we won't have a need for (guide dogs)." In case you think this sounds a bit unfair, remember a blind person or a paraplegic means no more (if not less) to animal rights activists than a dog or macaque.

Since PETA has been unable to convince many people to adopt its extremist positions, it sponsors terrorist groups who use violence to force change. PETA is closely affiliated with the Animal Liberation Front, a group classified as a terrorist organization by both the FBI and Scotland Yard, which firebombs laboratories and uses threats of violence against people to try to achieve its means."

"McDonald's is one of the largest murderers of animals on this planet. Ronald McDonald tells children that hamburgers grow in patches like vegetables. The first Ronald McDonald, Geoff Guiliano (now a vegetarian), has apologized for having brainwashed kids into thinking it's okay to eat meat. Spot Ronald and stop him in style.

A pie in the face is small potatoes compared to what Ronald McDonald dishes out to the animals. Here, stealth is key?a cow costume and vegan cream pie make the point clear. Ronald McDonald is a scary, scary clown."

http://www.peta-online.org/library/actionideas/circus.htm

"Find out when circuses are coming to town and select an elementary school (one close to the road will reach more people).

Round up friends to help with the demonstration (PETA can supply a list of activists in your area). You don't need a large number of people, since this event is intended to be educational, not confrontational.

Call us for fliers, a sample coloring book, and "Circuses Make Animals Sad" stickers to hand out to children.

Rent or make bear, lion, and elephant costumes. Make some posters with slogans like, "Circuses Are No Fun for Animals" or "Circuses Make Animals Sad."

Find out what time school lets out. Be there 15 minutes ahead of time.

Send out news releases (we can provide guidelines).

Take your camera to capture the event on film (send us copies!).

http://www.peta-online.org/library/actionideas/chicken/chic3.html

"Chickens are perhaps the most abused animals on Earth, yet they receive almost no consideration. That?s why it is so important to organize demonstrations that draw attention to their plight.

If people really knew what happened to chickens before they became dinner, we believe more would go vegetarian. So, to educate people, we urge you to organize a ?truth in labeling? demonstration at a local grocery store. Taking a chicken-costumed protester into the store and sticking ?WARNING! This package contains the decomposing corpse of a small tortured bird? stickers on chicken packages is a great way to open shoppers? eyes and hearts.

The demonstration only takes a handful of people, but the results can be great! No one has to get arrested, but the chickens will finally have a chance to speak out-through you. "

1. Choose a location?a downtown grocery store with a sidewalk along the front (rather than one surrounded by a huge parking lot).
2. Find three or more vegetarian friends to help you. Specifically, find someone who would be willing to wear the chicken costume inside the store and someone else to guide him/her and to
stick the stickers on chicken packages.
3. Contact PETA for stickers, leaflets, and posters.
4. Rent a chicken costume (or, if you can?t find one, borrow one from PETA).
5. Send out a news release the day before (PETA can provide you with a comprehensive media list if you don?t have one) and call each outlet to make sure they?ve received it. Call the media again the morning of the demo for one last pitch. Keep it short but upbeat and interesting.
6. Be on time! The media generally arrive early, so make sure you are on site and ready to go at least 30 minutes prior to the time listed on the news release.
7. Wait until the media have arrived before the chicken and his/her leader head inside to begin labeling chicken packages. Ask the media to come inside with you (call PETA if you need help with the logistics).
8. Make sure you take plenty of photos and send copies to PETA.
9. Good luck! "

Before you read any further, I strongly caution you about the links presented below. The "Church of Euthanasia", hosted by Envirolink, contains material not suited for children, or the squeamish. It is however important that you, as an adult, review this material, as it makes a very important statement about both Envirolink's brand of "environmentalism", and Lycos' association with such.

"So that's why I say "save the planet, kill yourself." Because it really has come to this, and if you've had enough, and you want to get out of the game, and you honestly believe that's the best thing you can do for yourself and for the planet, I, Rev. Chris Korda, am not going to stand in your way. I'll make you a Euthanasian saint. And if no one listens to me, and the population keeps on growing, until there's no trees, and no hope, I'll join you. I think about it every day, and I feel shame. I'm ashamed of the way humans have behaved, especially American humans. When I look at the ugliness Americans have created in just two hundred years, and when I read about the "savages" we've exterminated to make room for our so-called civilization, I feel suicidal rage, and that's okay, because that's what the Church of Euthanasia is all about. "Saying "thank you" to your body just before drinking urine will help you to realize the value of this golden liquid. Your body produced it for you. Celebrate life and put the urine into a beautiful wine glass. After all, it is the most valuable water on earth.
  1. Drinking. The mid stream of the first morning urine is taken. Begin with two-three ounces and increase it to your personal, comfortable level.
  2. Fasts. Fasts with urine and water are practiced for one or more days. J.W.Armstrong, a renowned urine therapist from England, lets his patients fast for up to 45 days. Fasts are only recommend under trained, medical supervision.
  3. Enemas. The easiest way to take an enema is with a syringe containing two-three ounces of urine. The urine is kept in the colon for as long as possible.
  4. Gargle. Urine is kept in the mouth 20-30 minutes, or as long as possible, for gum problems and other lesions of the mouth and tongue.
  5. Douche. For any vaginal discomfort or cleansing, a solution of Golden Seal and urine will give comfort and healing.
  6. Eye and ear drops. Any pain, burning and tiredness in the eyes may get relief with a few drops of urine placed into the eyes. The ears also benefit greatly if receiving a few urine drops for ear pain and discomfort.
  7. Urine sniffing. This is the most effective way of treatment for any sinus congestion and upper respiratory problems. "

Boycotts

From the Envirolink Website.....

"Because the boycott listings are not maintained by the EnviroLink Network, we cannot take responsibility for the accuracy of the information or the availability of the boycotts that we point to from our site."

Although Envirolink "takes no responsibility" for these boycotts, they surely have little problem bringing them to the attention of their readership. Please review the following, and ask yourself how many of the companies under environmental boycott, share shareholders with Lycos. Truly these people are at cross purposes.

And what are the effects on the stockholders of these publicly held companies? Well, as stock prices drop, investors loose money. Quite possibly investors who support these boycotts through their ownership of companies like Lycos. Perhaps an investor like you. These investors loose when their stock drops, their dividends drop, and again when they purchase the product "their" companies make, due to increased prices. So why are they doing it? Why is Lycos actively promoting it?

So what did we learn from our visit to the Lycos supported Envirolink? We learned that "Circuses make animals sad". We learned that sabotaging a hunt or fishing outing is a "good way to end the day". We learned that if you don't agree with someones care, ownership etc. of animals, you simply commit violent acts of property destruction, and attempted murder. We learned how to firebomb those who really annoy us. We learned that it's acceptable, and even encouraged to dress in a chicken suit, enter a business, and illegally place stickers of protest on products we don't approve of. We learned to pray to our feces. We learned that drinking urine is a seeming "cure all" for our health woes. We learned that boycotting all the companies whose products we depend on for the most basic daily activities is a sure way to help the planet, and finially, we learned that to ultimately "save the planet", we must "kill ourselves".

Off-Road.com contacted Lycos and presented them with this article. We presented them with the following letter......
From: Off-Road.com "The Off-Road Network"

http://www.off-road.com

RE: Lycos / Envirolink media coverage

Greetings,

We at the Internet site
www.off-road.com, a publication with 300,000+ monthly readers, are quite concerned with your recent alliance & promotion of the radical environmental website "Envirolink". While we respect your right to conduct business with entities of your choosing, we would like to point out some aspects of "Envirolink" that you may be unaware of. We recognize Lycos as a leader in its field, and one of the best search engines on the Internet. We feel however, that that standing will be greatly compromised by this new association.

As you may know, outdoor recreationalists are often at odds with certain factions of the so-called "environmental community". As such, we have long been familiar with Envirolink, and the groups it houses AND CLEARLY SUPPORTS. From a business standpoint, we believe your association with this organization could prove DETRIMENTAL to your company in both the long & short term.

While your link "Lycos saves the Planet" is great PR for you, following it to Envirolink results in information that has little to do with "environmentalism", and a lot to do with anti-humanism, anti capitalism, and a wealth of illegal activity. SPECIFICALLY, We have assembled several examples of what we discovered on a cursory examination of Envirolink's site, and we would like to share this knowledge with you.

Please refer to lycos.html & review this material. This information comes directly (except where so noted) from Envirolink, and this is what your readers will find as you direct them to that site.

Because Envirolink & the groups it houses actively work to eliminate our sport, our rights & our freedoms to access public land, Off-Road.com is intending to run this article on the front page of our August issue. We will not stand idly by and have that which we value taken from us, and we will inform our readership of what Envirolink is all about.

Before that time, we would like to give you the opportunity to review & comment on this document. It is accurate, and documented. It is not our intention to do a "hit piece" on your company, and we think you will find that the article clearly shows that. It is our hope however, that you re-evaluate your association with Envirolink, and hopefully direct people to a site that actually does provide good solid information about our planet, and the use of its resources.

In closing, I thank you for your time & consideration in this very delicate matter. If you have any questions, about this article, or if I can be of further assistance to you, please feel free to contact me.

Animal Liberation Front

JUNE 9, 1998, TUESDAY
HEARING OF THE CRIME SUBCOMMITTEE OF THE HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE
SUBJECT: ECO-TERRORISM
CHAIRED BY: REPRESENTATIVE BILL MCCOLLUM (R-FL)
2237 RAYBURN HOUSE OFFICE BUILDING

"In fact, the Earth Liberation Front has subsequently become a well-known entity to law enforcement. Furthermore, Mr. Chairman, the Earth Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front signed a joint communiqu? stating their solidarity and their blending. I've been able to determine that certain criminal Earth Firsters, Earth Liberation Front members and Animal Liberation Front members are, in fact, the same people. Examples are David Barbarash and Darren Thurston, convicted felons now again under indictment in Canada for attempted murder by pipe bomb, who at one time acknowledged themselves as Earth Firsters. I'm stating that there is no difference between eco-terrorism and animal rights terrorism. And there evidently has been some dispute about that difference. The perpetrators are, in large part, the same people. And the solidarity of action between them is openly declared. "

A lorry tractor unit was destroyed by flames and bomb disposal experts defused a number of other devices. Also, razor blades were posted to Anne McIntosh, Tory MEP for Essex North and Suffolk South and Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the Vale of York, a bloodsports supporter. They came with a letter that said "murdering bastard" and "animal murderer". Police said the letter was posted in York on Friday. Another envelope stuffed with razor blades was received by a second unnamed Tory candidate in the North of England."

"Greetings,
On Monday, July 21, 1997, under nearly a full moon, the Animal Liberation Front paid a visit to the Cavel West Horse Murdering Plant at 1607 SE Railroad Avenue in Redmond, Oregon. About 35 gallons of vegan jello was brought in with the team. Next, a number of large holes were drilled into the rear wall of the slaughterhouse office to bypass potential alarms on the doors or windows. Next, the area that housed the refrigeration units was located and again large holes were drilled through the wall at that part of the slaughterhouse. Two teams then poured the jello into the numerous holes and quickly began to assemble the three electrically-timed incendiary devises that would bring to a screeching halt what countless protests and letter writing campaigns could never stop."

"As with all direct action, a good rule of thumb is to keep it simple. Avoid the temptation to build the elaborate devices described in many manuals. The more complicated your device is, the more room for error. You want to use something that you can be fairly certain will work (barring flash flood, alien intervention, etc). and does not rely on tricky mechanisms. It is crucial to test any devices or mechanisms in a practice situation, under similar conditions to those you will be encountering in the action. Think about temperature, wind, time factors, etc. Make sure you know what you are doing and are comfortable with all elements of your device. Also anticipate what may go wrong and plan on how to deal with it. "

"Fire is a potentially dangerous tool. Think carefully about the potential risk to any beings (critters, you, or any other humans) and set the action up so there is minimal risk - keeping in mind that you can never make sure there will be no risk."

"Hey! You out there! Are you awake? Have you really taken a good look around lately? Have you noticed what's going on? We have less forests now. We have more roads and concrete. We have less species of animals and plants now. We have more polluted air, water, and food. Life dying all around us while corporate fucks and the brainless masses concern themselves with money and things."
Below are several more pages from the ALF site Documenting acts of terrorism, giving detailed instruction for bomb construction, and several other examples of what Envirolink considers "environmentalism". They are currently on-line..

"June 28, 1998

OLYMPIA WA -- The Animal Liberation Front (A.L.F.)and Earth Liberation Front (E.L.F) sent a communique claiming full responsibility for the destruction of two USDA Animal Damage Control buildings in Olympia Washington.

The Communique stated:
"This year for summer solstice the A.L.F. and E.L.F. decided to honor the wildlife of the great Pacific Northwest and the forests they call home by having a bonfire (or two) at facilities which make it a daily routine to kill and destroy wildlife."

Devestate to Liberate

"Trucks belonging to any fur related business are very easy targets for all type of damage and are usually worth tens of thousands of dollars. The bigger and more the trucks the merrier. Probably the most thorough and devastating tactic for use on trucks is the use of fire"

Just what is an incendiary device?

"Of course, we don't break into the store in the middle of the night to start a fire - we place an incendiary device in the store during shopping hours, under something inflammable."

Electronically Timed Incendiary Igniter

"Obvious warnings about fingerprints, hair, fibers and buying materials apply. Remember most electronics stores have video cameras. So buy components well in advance so that if the components are eventually traced to a particular store you aren't on video a few days before the action purchasing components. "

Time Delayed Incendiary Devices

"This is another simple electrically timed incendiary device for use in both buildings and vehicles. Make sure you don't leave any finger prints on any part of the device, wear gloves at all times when manufacturing and placing any incendiary device. All you need is a...."

"Maximum Destruction NOT Minimum Damage

Money is what the fur industry thrives on and when you take away from their profits, it hurts them where it counts. Economic sabotage is what they listen to. This can be various types of actions including the very simple; smashing fur shops' windows, squirting super glue into the locks, spray painting, filling bell peppers or Christmas ornaments with paint and "paint bombing" the building, etc. To be effective, a place should be hit repeatedly. Just be careful & vary your schedule so that the police aren't waiting for you when you go back. Every hit causes security to increase so go for maximum destruction. Malecky Mink Ranch was torched in Dec. 1992. The fur farm industry tried to deny that this was an A.L.F. action for quite some time. Eventually they could no longer hide from the truth as pieces of an incendiary device were found. Presumably, they wanted to cover this up so that other mink ranchers wouldn't be scared out of the business. If scores of fur farms were raided, then the industry would be devastated and many would stop raising fur animals for fear of] losing their entire investment. Remember, most fur farmers do this part time and are not solely dependent on fur animals to make a living. Therefore they are much easier to push out of business as opposed to a chicken farmer, etc. "

Conclusion

As of yet, Lycos has not responded to our letter. It is unfortunate that dispite the relocation / removal of certain ALF web pages, Lycos seemingly prefers promoting a brand of radical "environmentalism" that's trying to put them out of business. The ALF website located at http://host.envirolink.org/ALFIS/ remains online, & contains more examples of the same anti-human philosophy, violence, and destruction listed above.

It is unfortunate that Lycos seemingly prefers supporting radical environmental groups & their adgendas, over common sense "wise use" land management that protects the land while allowing profitable, sustainable enterprise to continue. It is unfortunate that Lycos continues endorsing organizations that promotes drinking urine, praying to feces, and placing the value of an animal far beyond that of the life of a human being, rather than directing people toward scientific, unbiased, & reliable information about the environment.

Lastly, we learned that Envirolink "relocated" many of the ALF (Animal Liberation Front) webpages. While we can only speculate why they decided to relocate these files, it seems rather strance considering the timing of our letter to Lycos, and subsiquent publishing of this article.

.We at Off-Road.com ask you to examine the facts for yourselves, and make an informed decision - Something that Lycos has apparently failed to do. Until enough OHV users & outdoor recreationalists stand up and be counted, it's likely that Lycos as well as other industry giants will continue profiting at the expense of our rights & our freedom.
