Frank, Thanks for the info. My power steering started to make a loud growling noise upon first startup while I was on a trip to the mountains in north Georgia. When I got back to Virginia, I took it into the dealer for an oil change and mentioned the power steering noise. The dealer checked the fluid level and found it low. Service advisor said it was topped off and that if it occurred again, the pump would be replaced. There was one other post here about pump failure. Based on your post I will check my level more often. Jim ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: power steering Author: Kuehnlfr@webtv.net (Frank Kuehnl) at INTERNET-MAIL Date: 8/20/1998 12:49 PM i got a car (non-m) in my stall today that had a groaning noise when the wheel was turned at low speeds. i checed the power steering fluid level and found it to be low. this car's power steering system is similar, if not the same, as the m's. the next step was to look for leaks, i didn't find any. this has happened twice with m's. i decieded to look for more info in the MB service lit. it stated that i sould remove the bellows on both sides of the rack, and look for oil. they were both filled with oil, so i need to replace the rack. if your vechicle has low fluid and the dealer cannot find any leaks, tell them to remove the bellows to look. also, since there will not be any drips on the floor if this happens, check your P/S fluid level often (every week or so). the upper engine cover is in the way, just pull up gently until you feel it "snap", then there is enough room to remove the dipstick-cap from the pump resivor. i hope this helps, Frank Kuehnl State of Michigan Master Auto.
