i got a car (non-m) in my stall today that had a groaning noise when the
wheel was turned at low speeds. i checed the power steering fluid level
and found it to be low. this car's power steering system is similar, if
not the same, as the m's. the next step was to look for leaks, i didn't
find any. this has happened twice with m's. i decieded to look for
more info in the MB service lit. it stated that i sould remove the
bellows on both sides of the rack, and look for oil. they were both
filled with oil, so i need to replace the rack. if your vechicle has
low fluid and the dealer cannot find any leaks, tell them to remove the
bellows to look. also, since there will not be any drips on the floor
if this happens, check your P/S fluid level often (every week or so).
the upper engine cover is in the way, just pull up gently until you feel
it "snap", then there is enough room to remove the dipstick-cap from the
pump resivor.
