Thanks for the information on the list on how to get door panels
off, both
from the list and from Andrew.
I have a question:
While they are probably better speakers, I am not eager to mount
a separate
tweeter when I upgrade front door speakers.
MB Quartz at one time had a 6.5" coaxial speaker QM 169.03KX which one
poster to the old list had installed in his ML. That speaker is apparently
no longer made. However, they do offer a coaxial 6.5" model, QM 1216.KX (I
think). They run about $320 a pair. Any opinions that someone might have
o these would be appreciated. If you don't want to respond to the list,
separate email would be Ok.
Thanks,
Sean

I saw this on the Edmunds forum:
I just talked to the local MB dealer in San Jose,
Calif., and he informed me that the 3rd row seat
option(dealer-installed) will be available
beginning Sept. 15, '98. Both '98 and '99 ML320
models will have this option, and the cost of
installation will be $1095.

Subject: Acrylic Window Sturm Shields -- Better Not....
Tried out the acrylic Weathershield Sturm Shields for a few
days. These are
the acrylic shields which go above and on leading edge of the front windows
and above the rear. I thought they were well made and a perfect fit but
removed them and sent them back because of excessive wind noise they
generated (more than twice that of the Thule roof rack with four bike
attachments). Also, while the front pieces pop in and stay in place
perfectly, the rear utilize double-sided sticky tape to hold them up under
the weatherstripping. Upon removal I have a sticky mess in the
weatherstripping which I'll be cleaning out for many moons. And, of course,
each time the kids raise/lower the rear windows it pulls down a fresh batch
of sticky stuff.
Bottom line: IMO, while well made an a perfect fit they are not
worth the
noise, and I certainly would not install the ones for the rear windows
because of the sticky tape residue if you remove them. Report on the
weathertech cargo liner to follow.

Subject: seven day update, electric coolers, turbos
Exactly a week, and 720 miles later on the '99...
Last friday the alarm headed for downtown False City. Contrary
to
what my salesperson indicated, they had not disabled the tow/interior
sensor prior to delivery. Five minutes in the service bay to shut
it off and it hasn't misbehaved since.
No squeaks or rattles yet. The body gasket at the top of the
doors
has an slim upper flange that's supposed to be slipped into a channel
in the roof; it was about 50% seated correctly, but that wasn't
surprising considering how little margin for error was provided.
Added the side cargo nets on both sides; the plastic well covers
weren't designed to leave quite enough space for anything to connect
to the tiedown ring underneath. It fits, but snugly.
If you're still looking for a 12V Peltier cooler, I noticed
today that
Brookstone has their 14-liter cooler on sale for $99. The lighter plug
appears to be set up for the shallow European-style receptacles, as in
the ML. The cooler is different from the Igloo and others in that the
rigid plastic icebox, fan and heatsink assembly is built into a decent
looking ballistic nylon tote with a shoulder strap. In addition to the
rigid insulation, the fabric portion is insulated and has a metallized
inner lining. There is no lid per-se; to close the box you zip the top
of the bag up.
It appears to be a German-market item; there are Tu:V and GS
markings on
the inside but more interestingly, on the cover of the instruction manual
you can see that they've covered over the words "Mercedes-Benz" and
"kuhl..." something, and the zipper pulls say Brookstone. FYI.

There have also been a good number of blown engines from
unsuccessful
conversions. Frankly, an intake-forward and exhaust-back only
conversion of the ML's 10:1 engine would make me extremely nervous.
Yes, the VW/Audi 1.8T runs a light-pressure (7psi stock) turbo
on 9.5:1 compression and has been successfully boosted to 14+ without
internal mods, but it's also known as an unusually strong engine
design. Even Dinan's careful BMW conversions pretty much always
include lowering the compression ratios, usually low-to-mid 8's.
I guess I'm just urging caution in the face of hyperbolic
performance
claims. The composition of gasoline hasn't changed enough recently
for miracles to occur.

My wife took out a garbage can the first time she drove the ML.
It made
a small door dent in the hatch but bent the bumper skin.
It was good that it lost it's virginity with her and not me.
I have been thinking about buying a new skin for the bumper until I saw
a painted out white ML 320. Skins painted white, white rockers and
mirrors...like the 430ML.
My dealer was asking 2000.00 extra for the paint...salesman says he can
have it done for 600.00. If they just pop off like Frank suggested when
he put on the bumper hitch, maybe I'll pull them off and drop them off
at a paint shop. Anyone painted out their bumpers? Problems??
Suggestions?

It's a little early yet for my first change, but I was wondering
if there were any "gotchas" involved in changing the oil. I
have the replacement filter and drain plug crush ring, and the
filter cap removal tool is on order. Do you have to do anything
with the anti-drainback valve before opening the filter housing?
And what's the correct procedure for tightening the drain plug...
is there a specific torque, or do you just hand-tighten on the
new ring and crank a certain amount beyond?
Any comment is appreciated, although I'm specifically curious to
hear what Frank has to say. TIA.

You might check back copies of The Star, the magazine the
Mercedes Club of
America. They had a two part article on do it yourself maintenance for the
ML.

Subject: Trying to mate accessories to the MBZ rack
I got the MBZ cross bars for the roof rack, and it's completely
different
than anything else I have seen, either Yakima or Thule. Has anyone had any
luck mating standard Yakima accessories to it, as I have a bunch? Had
hoped that Yakima would make an adapter, but the factory says no, and they
will not do so.
It seems so nice and aerodynamic, and integrates so well into
the existing
rack, but I wonder if I should get rid of it and replace it with a Yakima?
Has anyone done this, and how successfully?
Ken

The dealer (Smythe European) here is decking out a number of the
MLs with
bars and wheel flares and such, plus 18 inch AMG wheels and 285/60-18
Bridgestones, and painting all monochromatic like the ML430. The charge
for repainting lists out at $2,600.

Craig :
What other cars do you own?.
My wife and I have a 1994 JGC Laredo 4X4, a 1997 Pathfinder LE
4WD
(big mistake!) and a 1987 M 190 E. The JGC (getting old) will go after
I receive the ML320 (of course if my wife does not confiscate it for
her own use; Mexican macho?).
Sincerely
Pedro
