Aftermarket stuff is a film that is glued on. The privacy glass
is tinted like the bluish band on the front windshield in
most cars. Film will peel eventually AFAIK...

DRLs can't hurt, so if you feel better get them. They tend to be more useful
up north where the days can be shorter. This is probably why, apparently,
Canada does show greater safety with them.

I had a quality aftermarket tinting shop (Mr
Tint, a national franchise) tint the front
driver/passenger window to match the privacy
tint on the rear windows on my MI package. The
cost for the (2) fronts was $80.
The 2 front's came out great, and I would
say better than a 95% match in color and quality.
Yes, the aftermarket tint is a inside film,
and requires a little more care than in-glass
tint like the ML.
From my experience on my fronts, a
aftermarket tint job should be able to give M1
effect to the rear. But a aftermarket shop would
need to check the rear windows, especially the
rear corners, and confirm my opinion.

It's a fabric liner, and can be done to different degrees. Mine covers the
inside of the back hatch, floor, sides, backing for the back seats (up or
down), and the back of the front seats. So, the whole cargo area is
protected.

DRLs may be useful in some places, like long straight roads in Canada where
closing speeds can approach 160 to 200 MPH. However, IMHO it would be better for
lights to
come on automatically *ONLY* when ambient conditions warrant (many people don't
realize they can hardly be seen in fog or heavy rain). Having running lights on
in
daylight seems wasteful. Multiply a few million vehicles on the road at one
time, each with 40 or 50 watts of light on in the daytime, and we have quite a
few
megawatts of power being wasted --- without any real proof of effectiveness!

Thank's Vernon for the info. I really appreciate
it.
In the country, and the mountains, I really do
need better backup lighting.
When I 1st got my ML, I tried to source
rectangular halogen lights to add to the rear
bumper (popping out the rectangular tow covers
and installing the lights).
I should have gone your way with higher output
bulbs.
Again, thank's for the info.

It's possible to have DRL on the M-Class. See http://www.off-road.com/mbenz/faq.html
for detail.
I have ordered and installed the parts (three relays) but the local
dealership didn't know how to enable the right AAM option last time but I will
show them the AAM option next time when I bring it for service.

No they don't which is the main reason I want to have the DRL in mine. It
seems only the Swedish (Saab & Volvo) figures out how to set up the proper
circuitry to turn off headlights when the engine is off, something that is
extremely simple to do. After all, we do get the chime warning about the
headlights on when you turn off the engine and open the doors.

The only thing I didn't like about the DRLs on my Volvos was that you
couldn't turn them off. My wife like to go to a good old fashioned drive-in
a few times a year, and our old Volvos kept us from starting the car (their
DRL automatically come on whenever the car starts). On the plus side, it is
perceived safer by my auto insurance company - it's a $50 x 2/car
deduction!!!
I don't remember the behavior on the ML320, but you might want to verify how
it works before turning it on.

Actually, windshield damage is #1 or #2 most
common auto damage.
In addition to windshield replacement (and
quality replacement windows are as good as the
original manuf), there are also mobile repair
services who use a special epoxy to fill a ding.
Depending on the ding, the result's can be very
good to fair..The repair doesn't work for a ding
with adjacent cracking, crakc's requires
replacement.
J.C. Whitney's sell's a epoxy windshield repair
kit mail order, and I have also seen similar
windshield repair kits in some auto part's
stores.
Good luck...

So does this mean that the wide body is now being rejected? I thought
that's what the US market craved for when the first AAV was revealed. A
luxury offroader with a flared up body and a strong wide stance to show
off it's offroad prowness and pedigree. Actually, come to think about
it, there once was a long thread back at the now KTM-Bud infested forum
talking about first impressions of the AAV. Half of the posters said
they ordered the M-Class because they saw the AAV. The other half
jumped off the waiting list because they saw how ugly the AAV looked.
IMHO, the side panels look a little irregular, but the bumpers look very
aggressive. I think the looks, like the sound system, varies from
person to person. If they offer the AMG body kits as after market, I'd
probably get them. Just hope that they won't sand down the ML like some
of the dangerous fender flares. =D
Take it EZ people.

Subject: Daytime running lights - yes, again!
Hello,
I am a Canadian ML320 owner and my M has the DRL'S. I have absolutely no
problem with DRL's. In fact, I really do not understand why anyone would
be against them. It truly baffles me. Is it money? Are those who are
against the lights simply worried about the possibility having to spend
a few extra dollars on light bulbs? Is it a freedom thing? You don't
want your car to decide for you whether you have your lights on or not?
I'd like to know. If it is the freedom argument I still don't get it. It
would make more sense to me, I will admit, then the money part of it.
But then again what freedom do you have regarding vehicles. Are you
annoyed that there are headrests or collapsible steering columns? Do you
find side impact beams infringing on your rights? How about bumpers and
padded dashboards? Try not to forget that seat belts, which most of us
now have no problem with, were at one time indicative of a cars safety.
Why would you need seat belts? Is there something unsafe about driving a
1956 Dodge, for instance?
In Canada the M's DRL's are actually set up differently than most other
DRL'S. Most cars with DRL's simply light up the high beam lights with
less wattage. The M's, on the other hand, use every single light that
you would normally associate with turning your headlights on. Headlamps,
side marker lamps, rear lights, dash lights etc. THAT I think is silly.
I have tried to get my dealer to find out if the DRL'S can be changed to
the more common low wattage high beam system. Otherwise DRL'S are fine
and dandy! ANYTHING that MIGHT help some other driver see me sounds like
a smart idea!
Thanks,
Craig

If you look closely, the ad discusses engineering quality and MBZ ingenuity.
This has nothing to
do with waiting lists. I just find it strange to leave out the M Class.
MBZ is currently advertising the M Class on a frequent basis, Bus
Periodicals, Sunset Mag feature
M ads. If fact, if you read the most recent Motor Trend, C&D etc the M-class
ads are two pages.
Now these are CAR magazines and I wonder what MBZ advertises in SUV mags.
So, back to my point, I think the ad company and MBZ dropped the ball.

It is possible to have the hole "filled" so a crack will not develop. When I
was insured with AAA (lousy stinkin, er , never mind), they offered to have
my windshield filled for free. [The same shops that replace the windshield
will do the filling.] I never got around to doing it and then a month later
my windshield got vandalized at work, hence a new windshield was required
anyway. FYI, do not let these guys replace the windshield at work. Mine
leaked and I ended up having to get it done again.

Has anyone actually read the "law" that prohibits fog lights in Texas? There
are vast numbers of trucks driving around the Dallas area with fog lights, many
located as high, or higher, than the ML's and I'm not aware of anyone being
stopped for them.

The M's, on the other hand, use every single light that

I've been rear ended three times just siting at a red light. All by idiot
drivers. One woman was looking in her purse. One guy said he plain didn't
see me. The other had bad brakes. I think the rear lights being on would of
helped in at least one case, though the brake light should be on if your
sitting at a light.
Come to think of it, I have fortunately never been in an accident where
having the headlights on would of helped me. The side marker light could be
useful since there is always a chance of being broadsided while taking a
turn.
Now you've got me interested.

Thanks Ken, there site stated that it attaches with velcro. Is there a
lot of velcro tabs that have to be tacked on? Is it color coordinated
velcro? I'm just thinking about the glue the tabs will leave if the
cover is ever torn and needs to be removed.
Whay does the full liner run?

the manik guard has the easy-off lock nut, thgis looks like the lock-nut on
the bikes, the ones that are easily taken out and installed, it has the
long lever for locking the nut, jut unfastening it then locking it pushing
the lever in and it tightens the guard. it is a good design and i do not
see any problems with paint being chipped or anything.

Peter, is it easy to swing out. How does it lock in place? Any rattles?
Do you think swinging it open would eventually wear the paint on a black
guard?
Thanks,

Subject: Accident - Rear ended
All;
I have the unlucky distinction of being in an accident in my new ML.
I was rear-ended last monday while in raleigh, NC. The other vehicle
was a 1994 Dodge Dynasty. The police estimated him to have been going
55, skid marks 53 ft long and then hit me at 45. His airbags
deployed, mine did not.
The majority of my damage is: My bumper cover is toast, there are 4
small door ding dents on the rear hatch (from where his hood buckled
up and out), and my muffler was pushed up to the right rear wheel. I
will take it in for an estimate today and let you know how much.
The other vehicle was undrivable, had to call a tow truck to move him
out of the road.
Overall I must say I was upset, but still impressed with how little
damage to both myself and my vehicle. Guess that safety is really
built in well.

Glad you're OK.
I had a similar rear-ender.
I had a hitch installed (2) weeks before, and
the hitch stopped the offender dead cold..
Bumper skin replacement was approx $310 (the
skin now comes painted from MBNA), and another
rear hatch ding was done for $80 (paintless
repair, worked fine for me).
