Antenna Adapter?

(hopefully) a quick question .... What is an antenna
adapter and is it always required when the head unit is
replaced? When I went to Tweeter and discussed getting an
Alpine CD/tape unit, they never mentioned such a thing being
required. Should I be asking about this?
