The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released today the draft Environmental
Impact Statement (EIS) and draft Recreation Area Management Plan (RAMP) for the
Imperial Sand Dunes in Imperial County. The draft management plan outlines the
proposed direction and guidelines for the management of public lands and
resources in the Imperial Sand Dunes including goals and objectives, management
prescriptions and monitoring requirements. The EIS evaluates the plan and its
alternatives. BLM has scheduled six hearings to gather public comment on the documents The
hearings will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on the following dates and

BLM staff will give a presentation about the draft documents during the first
hour. Public comment will be recorded by a court reporter the remaining two
hours. Time limits for individual public comment will be determined by the
number of people who register to speak. BLM also will accept written comments. The draft EIS and draft RAMP analyze the preferred alternative, including
cultural, natural and recreational resource management needs for the Imperial
Sand Dunes Recreation Area. When completed, these documents will amend BLM's
1980 California Desert Conservation Area Plan. Reading copies are available at BLM's El Centro Field Office, 1661 South 4th

Box Springs Blvd., Riverside, CA (909) 697-5200. Reading copies are also
available at selected libraries in cities where public meetings are to be held.
