I recently changed the fluid in my auto trans (1986 4runner) and referred to
the owners manual for the correct amount for a refill. The manual states up
to 2.5 U.S. quarts, but the level does not reach the cold or hot mark on the

I will check the distributor cap/rotor, and wires tomorrow... What else??
Could it be the Injector? or injector harness? The Mechanic mentioned it
could be the valves sticking... Exactly what would he mean?? he said cause
it (the engine) was sitting around for a while, it might go away with use..

Tube is more resilient than pipe; it has about twice the "spring back" of
 similar
 sized pipe.
Being that tube is cold drawn, vs. pipe being hot rolled, I suspect the
 metal
grain alignment in tube is much more favorable for rollcage type abuse.
Pipe is quite a bit more brittle overall than tube; it tends to crack
 and/or split
instead of bending in a more forgiving manner.
And tube is lighter (2" .120 DOM vs. 1.5" sch 40 pipe) for similar sizes.
BTW, I made my cage out of 2" .120 DOM tube, my nerf bars and a few
other parts out of 1.5" pipe.
However, I did notice that it took more effort to bend pipe than it did
 tube,
but there's no scientific way of quantifying that; I might have just been
 tired
 (from bending all that tube)

<> PIPE: The outside dimension stays the same for a specific size pipe, ex 2", i.e.
 the schedule (ex: sched 10, 20, 40, 80, 160, xxx viz extra-extra strong, etc)
determines the wall thickness. The result is the ID reduces (wall gets thicker)
 with an increase in schedule.
TUBE: The inside dimension stays the same for a specific size, ex 2" and you
 specify the wall thickness.
The beauty is that PIPES OF THE SAME SIZE, but with different schedules, can be
welded together as the ID's change only. Invisible to the eye/no step/easy to
 weld.
Technical side: Material type (ASTM No), seamless, heat treated, cold drawn etc
are other factors but wont affect the efficiency of a Roll Bar.
That is the way I have got it.

Ok, something that has been bugging me since I bought my 1992 4Runner a

radio is turned off, the antenna doesn't go down. I want the antenna to
stay down when the radio isn't on since for tail riding we sometimes go
into areas with low hanging trees...
I've got the factory toytoa AM/FM Casette with the add-on CD below it.
Does everyone's truck do this? I really can't beileve they expect the
soccer moms to run them through the automatic car washes with the antenna
up???? Or did someone simply mess with the wiring???

My "new" 85 4Runner has a strange problem. When I drive on the highway>55,
the temp gauge creeps up almost to the red area. Doesn't matter if the AC is
on or not, or if it's cool or not outside. Street driving <45 it seems OK,
needle stays about in the middle of the gauge. This seems kind of backwards.
I've heard that fan clutches can cause overheating problems, how do I check
a fan clutch? All the hoses and belts are OK, there's plenty of coolant
that's nice and bright green, no leaks, etc.
 Any ideas?

Get a piece of light string (or heavier fishing line) & attach one end to a
sturdy place on the block or frame. Place the other end on one of the fan
blades & start the truck. If it's cold the string should hold, if the engine
is hot it should break the string.
I'd replace your thermostat & see if that helps. it only costs $5ish and
 about 15 minutes of work.

The fan clutch shouldn't matter at high speeds. It is really to help to
move air when the engine is idling or moving slowly to increase the air
 moving through the radiator.
There is a problem with 22R 22RE engines called temperature overshoot.
The thermostat doesn't react quick enough after the engine is started.
So, the engine gets real hot before the thermostat opens, then
 everything is fine after that.
pn #90916-03070 is a special dual stage thermostat that cures this
 problem. I have it in my truck.>> Any ideas?>> Thanks!>> Marc Sahr> msahr@extremezone.com> 85 SR5 4Runner> 84 SR5 4x4 longbed> 95 SR5 4Runner

yeah, since you will be pulling out the diff carrier to replace it with
either the trutrac or the detroiot (and the arb for that matter...). the
ez-locker and the lockright replaces only the spidergears so that makes the
 job easier.
once you pull the diff carrier out, unbolt the ring gear from it and then
slap it into the new carrier. then bolt the new carrier into the 3 rd
member and that mean adjusting the backlash. at least you don't have to
 mess around with the pinion...
oh and then you also have to get the mesh pattern correct also...
aw shoot, have 4wpw do the work. drop off the 3rd member to them and then
 pick it up later.
better yet, have 'rear end specialist' in santa clara do the work!!!

From: Chris Geiger Subject: Re: Manual hubs
It would be a bad thing to shift into 4WD high on the freeway with ADD
and manual hubs that are unlocked. ADD with stock "hubs" work great at
any speed as long as your wheels are strait and all of your tires are
the same size. It also works nicely if both front hubs are locked, then
you can shift into and out of 4WD as you please.
This works because the hubs (either factory or locked manual) cause the
front axles to turn, causing the front drive shaft to turn. When driving
strait the front drive shaft is going the same speed as the coupler
inside the tcase. It just slips forward onto the front output shaft.
But if you don't have the hubs locked and your driving down the freeway
and try to put it into 4WD the front shaft is not turning at all but the
tcase coupler is turning at freeway speed. It will make a huge grinding
noise and you will find little bit's of your tcase suspended in your
 oil.
Don't ever shift on the fly into 4WD with the hubs unlocked!> And as to why would you do that... well, I dunno. But the ADD is supposed> to be shift-on-the-fly to 50 mph or so. So what difference would manual> hubs make here? (i've never tried it above a slow speed anyway).

This might be obvious to you, but when I first changed my auto tranny fluid,
I negletced to make sure the engine was running when checking the fluid
 level...Yeah, I know...
Also, If you have the A340H, not E, there is the rear pan that holds more
oil. And thats not the x-fer case fluid....That fluid is kept seperate.
If you pulled the pan and filter, more fluid should of ran out. My manual
said up to 4.8 Qts of ATF, I had to add about 6 qts because I pulled the pan.
I would add some, let it run down the pipe, check it. Did this probally 10
times until I got the right fluid level.
 Hope I helped any,

Don't forget that you also have the 2" body lift so you will have a gap

My 81 22R did the same thing, to fix it A radiator shop suggested replacing the
factory 195 deg. theremostat with a 180 Deg. now the gage stays in the bottom
third of its range no matter what kind of driving.
Also, the bottom ratiator hoses are being sucked on by the water pump. as they
get old they get soft, at freeway speeds the water pump will suck them closed
which will reduce flow. Replace them with good quality hoses.

I've always used the 'better' coolers that are black and have the tubes
down the ends and aren't an 's' flow pattern ever since they came out.
The last 3 I got from the local junk yard. Once came from an EX cop car,
and the other two were off of a car, and a mini-van as I recall. They
were only $5 each at the U-pull it. The one was like 8x12" x3/4" thick -
 a huge one!
When choosing an auto tranny cooler fo towing - the bigger the better,
there's something like a 20% increase in trans life with every 10 degree
drop in temp. (or something dramatic like that)
Get the biggest one that your parts store has - B&M makes the cross-flow
design coolers, and I think Hayden has them too. Route the fluic coming
OUT of your stock in-radiator cooling tube into the cooler then back to
 the trans.

Yes, when you turn the RADIO off the antenna should go down automatically. I
have the full wiring diagrams in my '92 Electrical Supplement, but the books
are on the left coast right now. Dave has these books too for his '93, they

Something's wrong. My antenna ('92 4Runner) only goes up when the key is on,
AND the head unit is on "radio" mode. If I then start to play a CD, the
antenna stays up. But, if I turn the entire head unit off (key still on),
the antenna goes back down. My antenna probably hasn't been up in 6 months

the old stock unit, and the new Eclipse unit (stock unit is made by

Mine works the same way, with the key on and the radio turned on the antenna
goes up, but if I switch to CD with the stereo still on the antenna stays
up. But if I turn the stereo off and turn it on with the CD player, the
antenna stays down. I think that's the way it's supposed to work, but it
would be nice to switch from radio to CD and have the antenna go down
without turning it off. By the way, mine is hooked up to an Alpine CD
 player.

From: "Lawson, Chris" Subject: RE: 4 Runner Power antenna questions
Diversity antenna" or whatever Toyota calls it has to do with the dual
signal leads for RF not the 12v signal that tells the antenna to go up and
down. It may be that that model stereo does not have a power antenna lead
which is triggered by the radio being used but by the fact that the entire
unit is powered on which is how 90% of after-market stereos are produced.
The reason is the same lead may control an amplifier or EQ or something that
needs to be on no matter what the mode of the unit. An easy fix is to find
the wire out of the rear of the stereo which has 12v only when the radio is
powered. On an after-market unit (non factory) it will be either a blue
wire or blue wire with an white stripe. once you find the wire then you can
place a toggle switch on it and put the antenna down whenever you want.
While the switch is in the "on" position it will work as it always has and
when in "off" position it will not allow the antenna power to remain up.
 Good Luck
 Chris

tell you a few things to check. First check that the water pump/alternator
belt is correctly tightened. I have never been able to tighten it properly
by myself, but then again I'm not a double jointed contortionist either. If
that's not it, then drain some coolant out of the radiator and look in the
filler neck to see if you can see any deposits in the radiator cores. If
they don't look clogged, then I would suggest replacing the thermostat and
radiator cap with factory parts. Yeah, I know they cost a little more, but
you get what you pay for. I would say to ignore the fan clutch, as the fan
doesn't do much at highway speeds, and you say it stays cool(ish) at lower
speeds. I had similar symptoms from my 85 4Runner recently, and after
replacing everything in the cooling system but the radiator, I discovered
the radiator was clogged with crap. New radiator installed last Saturday,
and no more problems. Now if I could just get the seats rebuilt so that bar
doesn't poke me in the back anymore.....
