I haven't done this but plan to. I thought it was Joe Chacon's site
http://www2.whidbey.net/locktup/ but not sure. I think the idea is great and
you can armor the whole bottom and have nothing nasty hanging underneath to
catch on. I plan to machine 3" dia aluminum spacers, 2" long and buy the
hardware as needed. I have the alum so it won't cost much to do. Don't need
to modify the fan shroud, linkage, etc. because it moves up with the body. I
also plan to weld my rear bumper ( 4"x4" steel) and brackets in to the frame
and remove the spare tire hanger part of the frame. I'll then remount the
spare up against the bottom of the body ( i've got a 4Runner) and it should
allow me to mount the tire 5" higher than it is now. I'll probably just use a
couple of bolts to hold it up and not try to use the crank mechanism.
I'd love anybodies ideas on this!

Start the truck, turn the AC switch ON, set the temp control all the way
over to coldest, fan on high. Look at the clutch unit on the front of the
compressor. If the center "hub" section of the pulley part is turning, the
clutch is engaged. The outer part always turns, even when the AC is off.
If the clutch is engaged, look for refrigerant moving thru the sight glass
on top of the receiver. This is a tank-type thing, sits right behind the
grille to the right of the radiator/condensing coil. There are pressure
limit switches, that sense both too low and too high pressure for the
system. If you're too low on refrigerant, the low presure switch will
 override the system.
Is the condensor fan running when the AC is on? This fan is 2-speed,
depending on pressure in the system.
The 10A AC fuse is in the small fuse block above the right kick panel,
buried under the dash. You have to take the glovebox OUT to get to it (who
thought this up?), you'll need a phillips screwdriver and a 10mm socket
wrench.> Also, now my AC fan switch is intermittent. High turns off..> Wiggling can make> it come on.
Sounds like the switch, not the infamous resistor.> When it first stopped working, I turned it on and heard the fan> belt chirp for> about .1/4 of a second. Then nothing.. So I guess that could indicate the> clutch, huh????
Sometimes you'll hear a short chirp when the clutch engages, so this could
mean that the clutch is working.
Geez, where else could you get all this for FREE. Hope it's right... ;-)

A while back I posted about a problem I was having with my toyota factory
CD player intermittently cutting out on the right side. Several others at
the time also mentioned they were having the same problem (I know Tom
Pechovsky was one). I have managed to obtain the factory schematics for the
player and will make them available to anyone who wants a copy.
This was for a Fujitsu Ten factory CD player in a 2nd gen 4Runner. Model #

Email me and I will send you a copy.

It depends on what you're going to load up in it - if you're really
planning on packing the thing to the max, then I'd definately check the
weight if you're towing more than a couple of miles (cross country?)
Otherwise properly loaded you should be fine. If you have an automatic
trans I'd suggest adding an external transmission oil cooler for longer
trans life, and read your owners manual about using OD while towing (with
a 5-speed or auto! It will probably suggest towing in 3rd (auto) or 4th
 (manual).

From: Chris Geiger Subject: Re: Trailer question
At the 4Runner Jamboree last week I towed a 4Runner out that had a
broken rear diff. We put it on a trailer and took it into town. The
total weight was around 6,000 pounds. That was well over all ratings
ever posted for the truck. We just took it slow (under 25 MPH) all the
way. It was hard to pull it even at that speed.
As long as you have a 5sp your should be ok as long as you don't over
load the trailer and keep 60% of the weight forward. If you have an auto
tranny and plan to pull this trailer more than 50 miles I would get an
 extra tranny cooler.
You may also want to consider Downey 1.5" rear coil springs to beef up
the rear cause it's going to sag and will be a very ruff ride.> I have a '93 Toy 4x4 3.0 L V6 SR5 with a towing package (3500 max GVW> tow). I would like to pull a U-haul trailer 6x12 double axle. It's> required GVW is 3500. Since the max and required GVW is dead on> think I'll be okay?

This is a little difficult for some people to understand, but basically
you want about 10% of the total trailer weight at the tounge, so in other
words if the trailer weighs in at 3500 lbs there should be about 350 LBS
at the tongue. Too little tongue weight will cause trailer sway. Also -
here's one that most people don't pay attention to - Make sure the trailer
frame sits nearly level when it's loaded - adjust the height of the hitch
(using drops/raises) to make the trailer frame sit level - if the frame
points down during heavy breaking it will push the front end of the truck
UP causing reduced stopping power, frame pointing up can push the rear up
causing skidding (less so because of the LSPV in the toyotas, but as those
that have disabled it know it can cut breaking power significantly)
Trailer smart and you'll have no problems. I used to tow a 5,000 lb
trailer semi regularly with my '84 that had 5+" lift, 35" tires, 5.29's,
but also had a V-8. With the hopped up 4 cyl I towed 3500 lb boat around
 regularly 200 miles/weekend for 2 years/no problems.

measure the width of your ash tray and go buy one that size. The make a

Sounds like you need to either buy a Cruiser, talk with the local chapter or
 contact TLCA.
As a TLCA chapter the sponsoring club -pays- for insurance and other items
from TLCA. In exchange its a sanctioned event and advertised in the trails.
(Based on my knowledge of how it works)
Considering this I have no problem with that chapter deciding who is
welcome. Chapters are just local clubs (not started or controlled by TLCA)
who happen to join TLCA. It sounds like you should contact TLCA to air your
 feelings.

still need to rase the brake proportioning valve linkage on the rear

I`ll put them in next week. I bought the new hardware from Toy and it

I may be mounting a Midland CB in the pocket below the stereo head unit,
as an "in dash" installation. I will likely use an external speaker, hid

 Looking for help.....
My 89' 4Runner SR5 is doing the shaking/vibrating thing. The dealer said,
"the tires were out of balance". So I balanced them. No change. The dealer
said, "the tires were cupped". So I bought new tires. No change. The
dealer said "the NEW tires were out of balance". I said "your crazy" and
had them re balanced. No change. The dealer scratched their heads. That
 didn't help either.
So I'm looking for answers. The vehicle shakes, the steering wheel shakes.
It's seems to shake more when the steering wheels is not running truly
straight. And the steering wheels shaking seems to change in intensity
 from time to time.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
PS Are their any on-line parts/catalog/info pages dealing with Toyota
modifications/upgrades/etc. I've looked and haven't had much success.
 Thanks

It might be time for new rotors. They can become unbalanced and warped
and yours could be 10 years old, if never replaced. This cured a
vibration problem I was having a few years back. You could try and
balance your tires while they are on the vehicle. But, if you remove a
tire, it has to go on exactly like it was before.

I have a new vibration problem. It appears worse in second gear between
1800 to 2400 rpm but I can also feel it slightly in 1st and 3rd around
the same RPM range. It goes away if I rev the engine above 2400 rpm. It
goes away if I depress the clutch, but keep the RPMS high. The shake
seems to come from the front of the truck, with the engine being the
source (transmitted through the motor mounts). The steering wheel
vibrates up and down. I believe that something has become unbalance in
the pressure plate/clutch/flywheel area that happens to get worse at
2000 rpm. This vibration problem came quickly. The vibration is almost
 like a shudder, low frequency.
Just a note, I have a brand new rear diff, the electric locking diff. It
was preset up by Toyota. The vibrations do not appear to be coming from
the rear, nothing is felt in the seat of my pants. Just in case, I
retorqued all the bolts on my rear axle.

I'm sure this isn't your problem, but ...
I felt my first shaking/vibrating thing with fear. Oh, no, this is

looking for the problem, I pulled it into the shop. Their diagnosis?

It could be the wheels. Can you get the dealer to lend you a set off a
new truck? It may fix your problem. I have had trouble with two
different Toyota alum wheels. No matter what you do they won't balance.
They would balance the tire I was having problems with and take it off
the balance, then put the same tire back on the balance and it would be
way off. Balance it again, take it off, put it on and it would again be
 off.
It seems that toyota does not always place the holes in the exact center
of the wheel. I have not had this problem with any of the three sets of
American wheels I have used. They all balanced the first time and drove
 smoother than the Toyota wheels.
One thing to add here. I have been running American Steel wheels for
about 2 years now and am having problems with minor bends in the wheels.
It still drives very nice but when you look at the wheels as it is
driving down the road you can see a whooble in the wheels. Yes I have
used them hard but I thought they could handle this. I know alum wheels
don't bend like this be they are so soft the rocks just eat up the
outside edge. I am not sure what I am going to do for wheels in the
 future.
I am getting great tire wear with the 35 X 12.50's on 8" wheels. I am
running them at 35 PSI. So far I only got one ticket for tires sticking
 out of the fenders :-(
Look for a lame set of mud flaps on my truck soon. I am planning to make
them removable for the trail.> My 89' 4Runner SR5 is doing the shaking/vibrating thing. The dealer said,> "the tires were out of balance". So I balanced them. No change. Subject: no longer 2wd, and spacer Q
Today I finally got around to making my truck 4wd again after the axle swap.
I am using a shortened rear driveshaft in the front without a double cardan,
so I had to seriously modify my crossmember to allow the driveshaft room to
droop. I was initially worried that the trave on the driveshaft would not be
enough, but everything looks ok from my testing. Since my front driveshaft
is so long (34" fully compressed) I think that is why I am getting away with
 it.
So, with my further testing, I have found a few problems:
The ALl Pro "HiSteer" passenger side steering arm is way too close to the
tire sidewall, even with a 1/4" spacer up front. I haven't talked to Jon
yet, but I assume they intended people to use the spacer kits with this
steering setup, or else use something besides 4" backspaced wheels & 16" wide
 boggers :)
Also, I goofed when I made my shock towers :( First, I made them too short,
so I am planning to extend the upper mount about 2" up to keep from bottoming
out my shocks on compression. The other one is that I made them stick out
too far, and on compression the tire rubs the shock body.
I see that I can solve 2 of these problems with wider spacers in the front.
I just called AllPro & talked ot Pete, who said the front spacer kit is now
$150, not the $120 I was expecting (and is on their web page). Personally, I
think that is a little steep going up $30 (25% price increase) in a matter of
 weeks.
I know where I can get the studs here locally, so the spacers are my main
concern. Anyone know where I can get them from another source? From what
I have gathered, having them made locally would be even more expensive. Jon
is out of the office so I couldn't find out a price for just the spacers by
 themselves from AllPro.
Thanks in advance for any help
