Subject: Driveshafts - Attn: 88 V6 owners
Marlin had told me about this awhile back, but this week when I went to
have a new driveshaft made, I learned just what a hassle it is. I'll
tell you about it now, so it doesn't surprise you when you go to do
anything with your driveshafts.
It seems the 88 V6's, and earlier Turbo's, came from the factory with
oversized driveshaft flanges on the rear pinion and Xfer case output. I
don't know if the front shaft is effected yet or not.
If other V6 owners (other years I mean) have also run into this problem,
please let me know. I'm under the impression it was only the 1988 V6's.
If you're going to replace the rear driveshaft, your options are to use
another Toyota shaft that will fit those special oversized flanges, or
to redrill you existing flanges (which is not all that easy). To drill
out the flanges you will need a drill press, and need to make a jig
(mine was as simple as using a hole saw to cut the right size hole
through a block of wood) to hold the flange, due to its odd shape.
Now my flanges have both bolt patterns drilled into them, one 45 degrees
off from the other. This way I'll be able to run which ever driveshaft
I want. I'm going to carry the one I bashed up this weekend as a spare
(which uses the original bolt pattern), and usually use the shaft I'm
having made for me today (which will use the 'normal' bolt pattern).

I thought $300 was kinda high, seems inflated.

Thanks to all for the replies on fitting a Warn X8000i winch in an ARB
bumper. He ended up taking the truck over to the 4WPW store in Oakland last
weekend, and they looked it up, called the ARB distributor, and were assured
that there is a model that will accept this winch. So, he ordered the
bumper. We're hoping it's gonna arrive in the next 4 weeks.
I'll let you all know if in fact it does fit when it arrives, and if I get
the chance to install it.

Subject: Tacoma problem
My 1996 Tacoma V6 with automatic is having a problem i'm hoping list members
can help me with. It seems that after I drive for around 30 minutes there
is a high pitched sound that can be heard coming from the back drivers side
of the engine compartment. This occurs only at idle. I think the problem
is vacuum related because if I squeeze the vacuum line between the charcoal
canister (the noise itself is NOT coming from the canister - i'm aware of
that 'normal' noise) and the solenoid mounted on the firewall the noise
stops. Is the solenoid that controls the vacuum going bad? If so how could
I test it? (There does not appear to be any holes in the vacuum lines).
Any help is greatly appreciated,

Hey Neil,
There is a TSB for this. It is really a resonance from the hose for the
EVAP canister. I don't have the TSB info. with me at the moment (anyone
else maybe?). I can look it up if you like.

How could keeping the torque rod at it's original angle after doing a spring
and shackle lift on a 83' Toy pickup increase bumpsteer?

I can see how using a drop drag link to level the angle would keep it from
hitting the ubolts. But when you do a suspension lift the distance between
the pitman arm and steering arm are increased and the total travail of the
steering arm is decreased. That's simple Trigonometry. This increased angle
also causes the steering box to work harder. I have set up linkage on
several damper motors for the HVAC systems. The more angle the linkage has
to work at the harder it is on the little 24-volt motors you can hear this
right away when you test run a new linkage configuration.

The NWOR mount that failed had almost no contact cement on the top half of

I wish I had a very strong motor and low gears but that will come later.

I ran into this when I put an '89 tranny/transfer in my '82. Luckily I got
the '89 front driveshaft which had the larger flange pattern along with the
transfer case. The flanges were interchangeable so I swapped the rear from
the transfer case to the front differential so I have large
flange/driveshaft in front and the original smaller pattern in the rear.
BTW, the tranny was from a 4 banger, not a V-6, so the larger flange isn't
unique to V-6s unless there are three sizes?

You may want to check around on those prices. I paid $80 for a full Timken

I think there are 2 ways to tell them apart. One is that the red dial for
the IFS hubs is flush with the cap, and the dial for solid axle hubs stick
out a little.
There is also a spline count difference - one is 27 spline and the other is
30 (these may be wrong)

I was at my Toyota dealer this morning and I checked the price for

I read that it was $650 in the states. So I think it worth the trip for
those canadians who are interested to order from a US dealer.
$650 * 1.45
(exchange) = $942; plus around 5% for duty fees=$989. It's still an
economy of $350 can.! Also here a ARB is around $1200 can
without
compressor and a Detroit around $950.
I saw on their computer that all the parts could be ordered
separatly. I was wondering if someone could order only the casting,
the differential and actuate it externally using a solenoid or a cable?
May be it is not possible, I didn't have a lot of time to examine the

You're close. The solid axle hubs (pre-86) are 30 splines, and the IFS hubs
(86+) are 26 splines.
This is definitely one for the Toyota Trivial Pursuit deck.

Subject: one less 4runner in the world :(
On Sunday I rolled my 1985 4runner :(
I was doing some wheeling 40km north of lancelin,
Western Austrlia. I was doing 30km /hr along a
relatiively flat beach, when I swerved to avoid a
peice of wood, the beed poped off the front rim (as
far as I can work out) and the 4runner rolled 2.5
times.
Luckly every one was alright, except by 4ruuner is
totaled :(
Every body panel is bent on the 4runner. The roof
only compacted about 1" and the doors could still be
open, with a bit of force. The radiator was pushed
into the fan, the front windscreen smashed. The
canopy in cracked in mulitple places and one of the
rear-side Windows it smashed. The frame looks
straight (I'll get it check if I rebuild it). The
suspesion, engine, transmission, t/case and diff's
look ok. I shut it down within 10 seconds after the
truck stop rolling.
It landed on the passanger side, we had to get it
wheels down, my brother used his fj60 to pull it over
on it's wheels. Then we towed it through the back
trails for 4 hours to get it back to the town of
lancelin and got it towed back home.
A panel shop has looked at the 4runner and will be
recomending to the insurance company to write-it off.
As I would be requesting it to be put back together as
it was in my magazine spread. They are not prepared
to do that for the insured price (It is insured for
$30,000 AUS.)
I am hoping to buy back the salvage and get a second
hand body and put it on my frame (after checking that
it is straight). I have located a Jap import body for
$3500 AUS complete with rear canopy and all glass
(haven't looked at it yet). I have a 5.0lt efi motor
with a t350 gearbox, 4.88 gears with lockrights, 3"
suspension lift and 2" body lift and 35 bfg's. It has
custom interior and stereo, hidden wiring and fully
custom painted. It started it's life a show rig but I
had been planning (before this happened) to put
cross-over steering, long travel springs, dual
t-cases, custom front and rear bumpers, etc, etc, etc
Should I do a body transplant or should I forget about
it and start again ???
This truck has been built over 3 years and probably
only had it on the road for 10 months and was mine and
my girlfriends pride and joy.
This has been the worst day off my life so far, but it
is only a truck, I am just glad that my girlfriend and
myself are still hear to tell the story.
Christian.

I bought a cheap 2-ton floor jack at Sears a few years ago, specifically to
make a tranny lift. I still use the jack a lot, but there's not much "throw"
to it (low-to-high range). I found that now with low profile bumpstops in
the front, that I have to lower it all the way down, and set it on top of a
concrete block and a chunk of 2x10 to get enough lift at max to get the
front tires off the ground. It's a real pain. Lesson learned: don't buy a
cheap jack.
Sears has a deal now where you can get a much bigger 2-ton floor jack and a
pair of ratcheting jack stands for $99. I think the same setup is available
at BJ's & Sam's Club. If I can only hold out for 2 months, birthday is
coming.

Now I know far too much about the problem, and I am $300 poorer.
There are at least 2 revs of the installation instructions for the 3.4 L
headers. My rev (the evil one) is 3/97. The good rev is 9/97.
My headers were installed according to the old instructions.
Since I had heard they were a bit difficult to install, I had professionals
do the install. The followed the instructions. The probably should have
re-routed the parking brake line as well as the clutch line, as they
were too close to the header, but they didn't. Everything worked fine
for about a year, until my clutch line melted. I didn't think to check up
on their work, beyond watching a bit as they installed the headers.
They even fabricated a wrench to tighten a hard to reach exhaust nut.
The new instructions are simply wonderful. They clearly spell out what to
do to fix the problems I had. I will quote:
5. ... NOTE: On stick shift models, the parking brake cable will need to be
relocated. Remove the nut holding the cable to the floor pan closest to
where the cable comes through the fire wall and simply move to the stud
just to the left of its original location. They use plastic tie wraps to hold
clutch slave cylinder flex line to parking brake cable (away from left header).
Now edelbrock claimed to never have heard of my problem, and yet the newer
rev of the instructions clearly details what to do, while the old one is quite
terse, and does not mention the parking brake cable or the clutch flex line.
They were kind enough to put my truck on a lift, and look at things, and move
the parking brake cable, as well as give me the new rev of the instructions.
They said they worked with TRD on the TRD header. The TRD header goes
above the trans, unlike the Edelbrock one which goes below the trans.
It looks pretty tight above the trans, though that is where the stock pipe
goes.
I would strongly recommend anyone with the old rev of the instructions to
call Edelbrock and try to get the new rev of the instructions.
The guy at Edelbrock didn't even know there was an older rev,
until I faxed him mine. Perhaps a case where it is better to wait a
few months after a product is announced.
BTW, Joe McPherson Toyota (who works with TRD) says they have a TRD
cat back system for the Tacoma. When I asked how much it cost, they said
they didn't know yet, and call back in a month...

Christain I won't offer advice on the rebuild vs new truck, thats one you
have to work out yourself. However im glad to read that everyone was ok.
What type of tyres (size) and air pressure where you running? Im always
curious when these kinds of things happen. We each have a habit of building
bigger trucks with larger tyres and as a result the sidewalls get taller.
This can be a problem when aired down and a bead lets go at speed.

Well, I guess temporarely mounting liniting staps would work, but I've
always used a good floor jack - the one that's like $89 at SAMS - it's a 3
ton unit that will lift about 22" I think - enough to get a 35 off the
ground when placed under the axle perch on my old '84 P/U. it's much
beefier and larger than the junk that they sell for $29 at the local parts
places as a rolling floor jack. This really doesn't help on the trail
tho... For that how about getting some racheting straps to strap your axle
up for lifting - I know the ones I've got are rated at 2000 lbs each, so a
pair should hold the spring compressed fairly well.

The small two ton jacks don't have enough throw usually to lift my stock
runner w/ 31x10.5 tires. I ended up buying a 3 ton floor jack for ~$70 at
Price Club. Doesn't help much on the trail but is great around the garage.
I'd be interested in buying your hi-lift if you end up getting rid of it or
if you decide to go to the 60" version.

Had the same thing done on my '90 3.0 V6 a couple of times when it was new.
Never saw any problems from it.
Don't know about extreme overfills on these engines. Have seen it on older
non-Toyota engines.. never saw any permanent damage, just excessive oil
comsumption and fouling of spark plugs.
