run to a hardware store. pickup an eazy-out drill set. essentiall, it's
a reverse drill bit. set your reversable drill to reverse and stick this
bit in. then drill in reverse. it should work itself out.
the same thing happened to me when a shop broke the bolt. they used the
same broken bolt extractor and a quick shot of the air drill gun, the
 thing was out.
kinda odd that that little bolt keeps the axle from pulling out of the
hub. the washer that the bolt keeps in, presses against the c-clip that
is at the end of the axleshaft...

Just got off the phone w/ Michelle at TJM/Hella all she has left for 2nd
gen Runners are two T-17's, just the bumper tube, no mounting hardware, no
grill gaurd, no wings. 1 highly polished aluminum is $50, the other is $85
(not sure of the finish, I think it was a matte aluminum finish)
She can get the mounting kits, but claims it will take 3 months.

I am running 35's on 8" wheels with a 4" offset. I also am running All
Pro 3/4" spacers on the front axle. These move the tires out just
enough. I have my steering stops set at about 1/2 way out. The tires
come close but don't hit the leaf springs.

 Bryon,
I did the rear disk conversion also. I too had problems with the pedal
needing 2 pumps for the brakes to work correctly. I chased a lot of
problems but I have finally got it working right.
This is what I had to do to get it all right. The new V6 master cylinder
that I bought didn't work correctly out of the box, (Napa) replaced it under
warranty and it worked better. Then the new calipers that I bought stopped
working correctly and I got them replaced under (Napa) warranty also. I
still didn't have enough pedal though so I installed a 2lb residual valve
and it helped a little, but still not good enough. Then I took the stock
proportioning valve out and ran one solid line to the rear from the master
cylinder. I tried to put a (Summit) Wilwood prop valve in line but it too
did not work when I took it out of the package. This fixed the problem for
a while, but then I started having problems again but this time it had
nothing to do with the rear. The last problem was because my right front
wheel bearings had come loose, this caused the front rotor to wobble a
little and push the brake pads away from the rotors, the extra movement that
the pad took to get to the rotor took all of my pedal travel and didn't let
 fluid get to the rear.

A factory style headliner can be installed without any special tools other
than a utility knife and a screwdriver (to remove the screws to the 'grab
handles') Look up in your local yellow pages there should be several
shops under auto interiors that can custom make you a headliner or order a

 EJ,
Thanks for your kind consideration. I believe in Karma, and you will soon
receive something good. The truth is... down deep inside my 4-wheeling,
excessive compulsive subconscious libido, I want ARBs on my Toy. I am jealous
and envious when I watch my buddies press that little button (it seems they
have it mounted in a very conspicuous place, and when they have to push it,
they make the action very noticeable!). I have suppressed the urge to buy
because of cost and fear of overhearing the two guys standing near the gnarly
rock I'm about to climb, I reach for the button (making it real obvious) and
my ARB just won't engage. I struggle to climb the rock with only my rear
locker. I'm not looking as cool as I did just a few minutes ago on the last
gnarly rock. My confidence and cockiness is draining. Then one guys says to
the other "his ARB must not be working or he's just a novice and had to turn
off his CB so he could concentrate!" Actually, I'm hoping that through my use
of reverse psychology, coupled with the horrific abuse and mud-slinging
therapy I am hoping to get from this group psycho-dude, ARB-equipped, ultra-
sensitive 4-wheelers, someone will help destroy my subconscious mental block
that has me convinced that the ARB reliability problems are real!! All help
 will be very much appreciated.

From: Scott Wilson Subject: Raised my gas tank
I finally got around to raising my gas tank on my 88 4Runner yesterday.
I've been putting it off for a long time now. On the 4Runner, tanks
come about 2" lower than on the p/u's from the factory. Even though I
raised it 2", which is a SIGNIFICANT improvement, it is only as high as
 a p/u tank now.
I've never seen just how the gas tank is mounted on the p/u, but I
suspect I used the holes in the frame that the tank mounts to on the
p/u. There were a 2nd set of hole about 2.25" higher than my stock
location that I took advantage of. The bottom of my tank is now just
above the bottom of the spring hanger. Hopefully I'll stop banging the
 tank on rocks now. :-)
I didn't take pictures as I went along, and there is NO CHANCE I'll take
it apart again to get pictures... so you won't find a write-up on my
page. Joe Chacon has a good writeup on his page though...
 http://www2.whidbey.net/locktup/gastank.htm
This really wasn't a hard project, and required no welding. Just some
cutting/grinding/drilling I did it so its still all bolt together. I
started around 3pm yesterday and finished up around 9pm, including a
trip to the hardware store for bolts. Just make sure you have an extra
set of hands to help you out & only a gallon or two of gas in the tank
 so its easy to lift.
Now I just need to build a low (or 'high' if you prefer :-) profile
Xfer case cross member, and I'll finally have both of the low points on
my truck up where they should be.

If you have to pump a hydraulic pedal (break/clutch) it almost always means
that you have air in the lines or a bad master cylinder. Pumping will
compress the air in the line temporarily and allow braking or will get the
seals on a failing master cyl working to some extent.

I too had a similar experience. I had simply replaced the rotors and pads. I
experienced a low pedal some times. I analyzed and agonized over this for at
least 5 weeks. I checked everything over and over. I asked everyone I knew.
I had purchased a new vacuum boost, a 2 new master cylinders, pumped over 3
quarts of fluid bleeding the lines. I was about to buy new calipers. The
evening before, I was having dinner with some 4-wheeling friends and I
casually mentioned I was having problems with my brakes and mentioned a low
pedal. He immediately said "its your wheel bearings!" I knew instantly what
he meant. The rotors slap against the pistons and push them back away from
the rotors and when the brake pedal is pushed, the pistons have to travel more
distance to reach the rotors. I went home, jacked up the front tires and
wriggled the tires back and forth, sure enough, the wheels wobbled. I
retightened the wheel bearings, bingo --- problem gone.
This problem/solution should be on an "ALERT" somewhere on our Tech Tips page.

On the secound try does the pedal feel good? You may have loose wheel
bearings in the front. If they are loose enough, when you drive the rotors
will push the pistons back into there bore. Also if you have the Cadillac
style rear GM caliper check and make sure they are adjusted all the way.
They can have problems with going out of adjustment. Put a dial indicater
on all four rotors and make sure they are all true. I personaly wouldn't
run a residual pressure check valve. You shouldn't need one. They are
designed to keep the cups in the slave cylinders from calapsing and letting
fluid get by them. Since drum brakes have heavy return springs the little
bit of pressure wont apply the brakes. If you use it on disk brakes with no
return springs it can push the pads against the rotors applying the brakes
a little bit. I wouldn't want that on my truck.

Neat article with neat graphics, but that set-up is being run on a few
Class 8 SCORE trucks. The rules mandate that you hafta run stock
suspension concept, so you HAVE TO keep the leaf spring set-up. This
design allows you to keep the leaf springs as an original style suspension
component (nobody said you have to run semi-ellip!), while still getting
mondo travel since the springs aren't attached to the axle, is SUPER
HEEEAVVVYYY!!!! And you gotta have a pretty strong mounting
box to mount a leaf pack that is about a foot or so thick!! I think Brian
Collins or Dale White runs it on his Chevy Class 8. The trophy trucks use
a coil-over and swing-arm combo that weighs a bit less.
Maybe we'l have pics of it from San Felipe this weekend ;)

 Subject: Driveshafts
I was looking at the driveshaft Chris G. is running, and cama across anarticle
in an old 4 wheeling mag. WHen I first saw the picture of Chris's new front
shaft, I though it sure looked like a PTO shaft. The article I saw mentione
someone was using such a setup, and was getting close to 25" of travel out of
 it.
I plan to drop by the local driveshaft shop and see what they can do. I may
or may not use a CVon the front shaft, and I will probably not at first to see
if I really need one. I guess my main concern here would be the ability to
balance it, but I figure a good shop should be up to the task. Any thoughts?

I think that could help my problems to an extent, by checking the wheel
 bearings.
But before I did the swap I had fine pedal travel. Do the rear discs
take up that much extra fluid?
I am using cadillac rear calipers, new master V6 cast, 2 lb. residual.
I guess that I will try to see if the wheel bearings are the cause.
Anybody know if 5.29 and 33" are awful for the highway?
 Thanks,

Why didn't he try to get in warrantied? They are standing behind them
for more than a year (warranty).
I personally know of 4 grenaded Detriots in the last year alone. Yes,
personally. They aren't what they are cracked up to be as the "King Kong
Strong" ad says. I agree, that anything mechanical is designed to fail tho.
Like someone says, it's only money and you can't take it with you. :-)

Like anything mechanical ARB's can fail. An early Bronco in our club has
one in the front Dana 44 , it had a major melt down after 3 years of
hard wheeling behind a built 351C & a driver with a lead foot and 36"
 swampers, it basicly came apart.
Detroit lockers have a reputation for being tough but I managed to break
one in the front of my four cylinder 4Runner. Great excuse to by an ARB
 though.

OK - Understood about complexity :-)
Guess that's why I wheel with a simple rig. One vacuum hose, no EFI, no
electric fuel pumps, about 5,000 ft less wire than most of the EFI or newer
rigs. Makes it pretty simple to keep track of two ARB units. This is also
why I carry a tire pump in the back-pump up a tire if absolutely neccessary
(once), and put air in the ARB if the unit needs it (hasn't been needed -
yet). I believe in the KISS (keep it simple stupid) method, especially
 where I wheel and fish.
