I installed a set of RS5000s onto my '84 last year. The truck had a pretty
nice ride at the time, but after sitting for a few months this winter, it
seems unusally stiff!! Is this just my imagination? or is there a logical
 explanation?

TV cable adjustment. With the trottle open all the way (engine off,
obviously) there should be a little metal tab or indicator sticking out
of the cable housing (sheath). If it's not barely sticking out or flush
with the sheath, it needs to be adjusted via the adjuster/lock nuts on
 the cable itself.
Be sure he check's fluid level and quality before doing the adjustment.

I just installed a set of Superwinch Manual hubs a few weeks ago on my ADD
1990 4Runner. It is a very easy job. I know everyone seems to be in love
with the Warns (a very good product) however for $10 bucks less you might
also concider the Superwinch for 2 reasons: 1. To activate or deactivate
4x4 takes a full 1/4 turn. Very solid engagment in both positions. 2.
Superwinch is warrantied at the store you buy from so replacement of a
broken one is as simple as a trip to the store...Warn makes you send it to
the manufacturer, that ends up bing a few weeks of down time.

Subject: Re: starters - rebuild a rebuild?
 Just my experience:
Two years ago I went through 4 alternators in 14 months. I battled my local
Pep Boys about the junk they were selling even with the Lifetime Warranty. I
even had one fail in 1 day. Anyway, I finally bought a Bosch at NAPA, three
year warranty, but Bosch will pay for towing if it fails. I believe the same
thing is applicable to the starters. My starter finally started (a 3 year old
Checker Autos lifetime warranty) dragging and then intermittently, would not
turn when I turned the key. I just bought a Bosch at BAP for $80 with a one
year warranty and the same Bosch will pay for towing deal. NAPA had the same
Bosch part for $85. As with the starter, I decided "screw the lifetime
warranty", I just sick and tired of having it fail and having to replace it.
I personally have never tried to rebuild an alternator or starter, but I was
told by my Toyota mechanic friend that the starter is rebuildable fairly
easily. Just my comments on the subject.
 Gnarls.

Just avoid Checker and the other cheap stores entirely, along with their
"lifetime under the truck replacing the starter" warranty.
Make friends with your local auto electric guy - especially if you're in
a club - usually starters and alternators just need bearings and/or
brushes to be "rebuilt". (Maybe an internal regulator for an
alternator.) I just put a new regulator and brushes in my Mustang
alternator for $20.31, and this was after nursing it home about 500 miles
so I would'nt have to use the rebuilt I bought at Western Auto.
When the rebuilders "rebuild" something, all they do is disassemble and
clean it, test all the pieces and replace what needs it. You can do the
 same thing yourself.

 2. Another one for doing 90 in a 65. When will I learn! That one stayed

 3. This weekend, got pulled over for 85 in a 65. The cop was cool,

This is all on a 1990 4x4 Toy truck with 206,000 miles on it and stock

From: "george pushti" Subject: modifications to 82 short-bed with 22r engine
I am new to the list. I apologize for the lack of 4wd content but my
 questions might be of interest.
I would like to improve several items on my truck:
 1) replace bench seat with bucket seats that incorporate neck support. I
have heard that mr2 seats are great for this. Has any one upgraded their
 truck seats?
 2) Replace rear bumper with one that can accept a small hitch ball. Nothing
fancy, I just need to do some light towing. Previous owner fitted a "pretty"
rear bumper with no hitch provision. Can anyone recommend a source for a
plain truck bumper. Junk yards, Toyota dealers, and for sale ads have not
 been helpfull.
 3) New shell. The old one looks ratty on an otherwise beautiful truck. What
should I look for in a new/used shell. Can anyone make a brand or suplier
 recommendation?
 Thank you for your help.

As for seats I just put in nice seats out of a RX-7, went in by bolting
on the stock toyota bucket seat brackets 82, had to drill 2 holes on the
seats, 2 lined up. Took maybe an hour total.Sorry I don't know what year
the seats are, I traded for them, and can't even know for sure they are
RX-7 seats! I do know the guy I got them from and belive him saying he
took them out og the RX-7. They are cloth adj. bla, bla, bla, feel
 great, very happy with them.

Subject: Mileage Correction for oversized tires
Here I am, coming to the rescue again...... :-)
If you want to figure out how accurate your speedometer is, it's very
easy. Other than having your speedo calibrated by a speedo shop, this is
the ONLY accurate way to do it. Measuring rolling diameters and all that
other stuff is no substitute for seeing what it actually does on the
 road.
 SPEEDOMETER
Cruise down the highway anywhere they have mile markers. Hold 60 mph as
exact as possible and measure the time between markers.
Use this formula to figure AVERAGE speed:
60 seconds/actual time in seconds to go one mile x 60 mph = actual
 AVERAGE speed over that mile
Therefore, if it takes 45 seconds to go one mile:
 60 seconds/45 seconds x 60 mph = 80 mph or reduce it to 4/3 x60 = 80
 54 seconds? 60/54 x 60 = 10/9 x 60 = 66 mph.
Be aware that this will only give you an AVERAGE speed; if your speed
varies all over the place, the figures are useless. If you measure over
more than a mile, your results will be more accurate.
 292 seconds for 5 miles? 292 seconds/5 miles = 58.4 seconds per mile,
 so:
 60/58.4 x 60 = 61.6 mph
You can do the same thing for any other speed you want to -- just do the
math and figure out how long it should take to go one mile at that speed.
 EXAMPLES
 30 mph = 2 minutes
 40 mph = 60/40 x one minute = 90 seconds
 45 mph = 60/45 x one minute = 80 seconds
 75 mph = 60/75 x one minute = 48 seconds
 ODOMETER
Just compare your odometer to the mile markers as they pass by. Again,
if you compare for several miles, your results will be more accurate and
easier to see the variation on the odometer. You have to estimate
between the tenths, so going several miles will make this easier.

 Mark,
Only 3 things you can do:
 1) Supercharge it
 2) Bring less junk
 3) Downshift and go slower
Seriously, there's not much you can do - just make sure it's in tune,
maybe with a fresh oil change, and I'd strongly recommend a good coolant
flush with a new turdmostat (Toyota, not aftermarket) and antifreeze
before you leave. This should minimize any overheating possibility.
Might even want to go to a 180 'stat instead of a 192 to keep the engine
 cooler.
Coming in on I-70 to Colorado the pulls are pretty much all gradual and
you should be able to cruise halfway decent. You'll notice the big change
in power after you leave Kansas westbound, because that's when the
 altitude starts to increase.
When you consider that we moved to Colorado in a 1961 Falcon wagon with a
144 six cylinder, carrying 5 of us and pulling a U-Haul with everything
we owned - you should be sailing right along!
The engine loses power simply because the ambient air pressure decreases
with altitude - the K&N filter won't help any and, based on what the
feeling on the list is, I wouldn't want it protecting my engine for a
trip like that. Throw out the K&N and go with a standard-type paper
filter. The lack of humidity in the west makes our dust a lot finer than
what you'll normally find in Louisiana.
Incidentally, I've taken my Toy truck to Florida several times, including
once through Shreveport and Baton Rouge, so I know of whence I speak.

Contemplating a trip this spring/summer to Colorado or back to NC. Is
there something I can do to help my engine regarding the thin air? I just
 put the K&N drop-in...

 Well here it is,
First of all, I would like to say you guys are a lot cheaper then a

 THE PROBLEM:
My truck started acting up. What it does is feels like someone put on
the breaks without even touching them, then all of sudden, lets go. The
check engine light comes on. I guess the way I would describe it is, tying
a rubber band to the back of the truck, pulling to the end of it as it
tightens up, then lets go. Any ideas??? I think it is time to take it in.

Thereis a link off the main Toyota page on ORC that will tell you how to get
codes from your truck - you really need to do this.
I had a similar problem when I was shorting out the fuel injector wiring
harness, but it could be several things.

Good idea. However I have a Visa debit card through my bank, and it offers
the same protections as my normal Visa credit card. Not all debit cards are
this way, but some are. Visa can be a VERY good ally if somebody tries to
screw you over. When ordering over the net I only use a Visa (credit, or
debit, same protections, for me anyway) and only through secure sites (have
a locked padlock icon in the bottom of your web browser). That way your CC
number can't be stolen, and you have some recourse against the other party.

About comparable performance with warn M8000 series. I don't like the
 Cheapo plastic remote switch.
If it comes with a circuit breaker, don't install it. Wire it directly to
the battery. The circuit breaker they give to me is only rated for 210
Amps, while the motor will drain up to 350 amps. Be careful not to overheat
 the motor though.

Not to mention a very large frame. At least on the "Disco" Vettes, the front
of the frame is a 4" diameter pipe used for a vacuum resevoir. The radiator
