 Hey guys and gals,
I am having a little trouble with my transmission in my '85 4Runner. I went
to AZ. a couple of weeks ago and did a little exploring on the back roads
with my family, we didn't do anything challenging at all. But the next day
when it was time for me to come back home I got on the highway and it would
not go into 5th gear all of the other gears work and do not make noise. It
acts like fifth gear was never in the tranny, it's like there is no gate for
it to go into. It was a REALLY long trip back without 5th and 33" with
5.29's. I haven't done much to diagnose it but I have been told that it is
probably internal. Anyone have this problem before or have an idea? I am
going to take out the shifter tomorrow to see if it could be in there.
 Thanks for any help.

I have got a 88' xtra cab that I use to show and years ago I had a targa
top (A partial covertible top) put into it. Now I want to start
wheeling it and know this could be a problem, plus it leaks really bad
in the rain. My question is how tuff is it to weld a top back on it and
what kind of problems will I face, if any??
I found a cab at a local junk yard that I can pick up which has the
front window, top, and back including the extra cab windows all in good
 shape.
 Any advice would be appretiated.
 Thanks

Clean the connectors well and ASAP because I lagged. My terminals corroded
enough to cause my truck to barely run. Also, clean electrical terminals behind
the left kick panel as well. Probably a good idea to do the air flow meter and
 terminals, too.

From: "Ronald Erickson" Subject: The "Taco" is coming....
Hello all.... After several weeks of bugging you people about which kind
of lift I should put on my 98 Tacoma. I finally decided. I went with the
 Trailmaster 6" lift, 33x12.50 MT BFG's on Eagle 15x10 289 wheels.
The reason I did not go with the 4" Procomp is two fold. First, Everybody that
I talked too that had the 4" Procomp and 33" tires had problems with their tires
rubbing. Even Procomp only suggests 32" tires. I 4x4 my truck, the lift is not for
looks. And I did not want any rubbing when out 4 wheelin'. Second, After talking
to a few local shops, I was told that under "rock crawling" conditions that the
 procomp
lift had some problems with the spindle spacer breaking. That is why Trailmaster went
 with the strut tower config.
I almost went with the 33x12.50 TSL Thornbirds, but I decided to get the BFG's
due to the fact that they ride much better and last alot longer.
Also in the past week I put on some Smittybuilt sure step nerf bars, and Installed a
Cobra 75wx remote mount CB radio. My truck is a 1998 Tacoma TRD extracab
V6. I will put some before and after pictures on the net when this is complete. Im
 dropping
off my truck at the shop tomorrow morning and pick it up Thursday.
 Thanks for your help everybody,

I personally would use a silicone sealer on the holes BEFORE the liner is
sprayed in - that way you get a nice even surface without worry of holes.> 2.	Batteries and exposed wires under hood?> Get a marine case for the battery and silicone any cables.
I'd skip the marine case - it's usually just a vented plastic box - won't
slow water down much. I would use a sealed battery in order to prevent
the acid from mixing with 'swamp water' when you're underwater. Keep the
connections clean & corrosion free, and put some grease or vaselene on
them to prevent water from corroding them so quickly.> Don't forget about the ignition switch and the wires that> go to it and the starter.
Well, sealing the starter is probably a good idea, use a silicone sealer
on all the mating parts, and that should slow water entrance into it -
it'll probably get in from the belhousing end. Now there's really no way
of sealing the factory alternator and anyone that has gone muddin' will
tell you the brushes can get filled with junk and cease to work temporarly
 - - flushing with clean water usually takes care of this. The alternators
run warm when they're woring near capacity, so I wouldn't want to seal it
 up.

Try looking at the gaskets that GM/Ford/Dodge used on their ram air setups
 - - it contacted the hood faily well, and had a channel that fit over the
edge of the air cleaner housing. A lot of reproduction pieces area
available out there - try classic industries or a host of other

Well, I've never come across a product that applied as thick or as 'nice'
as the commercial spray-on coatings. I know that for the price when I was
looking to do the bed of my truck that a liner from Line-x, Rhino or the
like wasn't that much more than doing durabak, and would end up about 10x
thicker overall, and not nearly as grainy.

**IF** I recall right it might be at the front of the tranny case inside
the belhousing - pointed right at the torque converter - I think to extend
this you'd need to tap the hole, use a right angle fitting and then use a
solid line through the top of the case, then attach the flexible hose from
there - and double & triple check that it doesn't rub the converter.
Otherwise seal the hole (tig weld??) and drill & tap one on the top side
 of the case.

The following is based on much generality ;-)
I've been wheelin' in my Toy for over 13 years now and it's amazing
how things have changed. Way back it used to be that Toy trucks were
not looked upon with much respect. I often heard jokes and disparaging
remarks spoken out loud. If someone were to make a complement about
my truck or another Toy it was usually done in a close, quiet conversation.
Comments heard over the CB were generally not favorable.
As time passed, the bad remarks were more vocal at the start of the trail, but
died out along the way as the Toys kept up with the other vehicles.
Nowadays, most any knowledgeable fourwheeler knows better than to
bad mouth a Toy truck or 4Runner........you just never know who might
and might not survive the trail ;-)
Anyways....true wheelers don't really care what you wheel, as long as
 you do wheel.

Nope, Shane Hook supplied me with the needed pictures. The page is on
my to-do list. It'll probably get done in March.
Here is a description of removing the auto hubs written by Bill
 Brown....
O.k. You take off the auto hub cover and then you remove the 12mm nut on
 the
inside of the hub. Remove the 12mm nuts and cone washers. Pull off the
 hub
body. Compress the spring with a pair of pliers and move it around so
 that
you can get a size 20 torx bit in to remove the three torx bolts and
 remove
the auto hub clutch (it just sort of fell out from there.) Remove the
 54mm
hub nut and that 's it for the removal part. Then you start putting on
 the
hub nuts and washers on. And I wanted to ask you a question. It was as
 easy
as you said and worth every dime( even the$20 54mm craftsmen socket) .

I am setting up a dual optima battery(1 yellow, 1 redtop) setup with an
isolator solenoid that will allow me to isolate it from the cab in winching
operations. It will also be connected to the ignition so that it will
isolate the battery when the vehicle is off as to prevent battery drain from
1 battery trying to charge the other.
I am going to try and seal off all the connections as well as possible and
the batteries are drycells so water cant hurt them but I was worried about
the battery terminals themselves. Couldn't it short it out if the whole
 area gets wet enough?

 My '91 V6 4Runner has developed at 120K a condition where I will
occasionally hear what sounds like water running around somewhere behind
the dashboard on the passenger side. I understand lots of the A/C plumbing
is in this area behind the glove box. Any suggestions what might cause
this, and what might fix it? Or is this "non-user-servicable" due to the
refrigerant issues? It is particularly apparent when starting, stopping,

Lately when I run my air conditioner (ahhh, these brutal Texas winters!)
the drivers side carpet gets damp. I think that the A/C condenser drain

After a tree fell on my 4Runner I took it to a body shop and they said
they could fix it like new. They ordered a new roof from Toyota. It was
cheep at $300. They also ordered a few other little parts like glass and
internal supports. The total cost came to $8500 to repair the roof. The
 work they did was great.
Thinking back that would have been a great time to bob the rear end!

my 95 Toyota Tacoma 4x4. I have been getiing a slight "rattle" from my front

"LOCKED". It happens when I hit bumps in the road. Second question: I'm
getting a vibration when I turn the steering whell at slow speeds (5mph--like
when I'm parking the truck etc..)
It seems worse when I have alot of load on the elec. system, (lights on stereo

This really sounds a lot like either :
 1) water accumulated in the bottom of the heater box (plugged drain line)
 2) Heater core is airating or there is air trapped inside the core
causing the 'bubbling' sound - you might check for a loss of coolant (head
gasket problem) - there may be a slight external leak or an internal leak
(check the oil dipstick and oil filler cap for condensation) If it's
leaking take it in and have the dealer do the head gasket service.

Couldn't it short it out if the whole> area gets wet enough?
Well, look at the distance of the terminals and the conductivity of water
 - - Water isn't a great conductor of electricity by itself - contaminated
water actually conducts water better (saltwater) I doubt that you could
pass enough current across clean water to create enough of a short to kill
the battery - the terminals are about 8-10" apart and in order to draw say
500 Amps from the battery (a short effectively) you would need a
resistance somewhere around .026 ohms - never going to happen.. most
likely there would be a resistance in the hunderds of ohms and you would
get a small current draw - even at 100 ohms it's only less than 8 amps
of current - I'd look at waterproofing where the +- connections are real
close to each other... Keep the terminals well lubed to repel water and
corrosion and you shouldn't have a problem with your battery. I'd pay a
lot more attention to all the little connectors underhood and make sure to
apply a generous amount of diaelectric grease at frequent intervals (esp.
after power washing the engine) to keep the terminals from corroding and
 causing a high resistance.

Seven inches of water inside the truck will do that. You will need to
extend some of the wires but it's worth it.

Subject: Swap delay & trail report
I have decided to delay my solid axle swap for a few weeks. This was I have
the whole week of Spring Break to work on it and don't have to fight for a
ride to work & school. I guess it is better, it gives me a few more days to
 gather parts.
 Things I already have:
 - -homemade front springs
 - - 81 front axle
 - - 4.88 gears
 - - All Pro crossover kit
 - - Stainless extended brake lines
 - - 13.5" travel shocks should be here Friday
I still have to clean the axle housing of years of grime, and I need to order
a steering stabilizer (any suggestions?). I also need to order an EZ locker
 for the diff.
A quick trip to the welding shop & I will have the steel for the shackles.
Anyways, I hit the trail last weekend with the thoughts that it would be my
last IFS ride, but I find it hard to believe I can go 3 weeks without hitting
the trail - we shall see :) Feel free to take a look at some pics & a trail
 report on my page.

 I have a 92 FJ80 that gets 12 MPG in the hills/mountains and
about 14 MPG on the flat land.
 The 91 and 92 80's have a smaller engine than the 93-97
80's. I have to keep my foot into the throttle pretty
hard to keep my 80 moving along. I would guess that the
newer, more powerful 80's would get better mileage since they
wouldn't have to be driven so hard. The 93-97 80's also
have 24 valves (instead of 12), 7 main bearings (instead of
4), a different transfer case (with viscous coupling) and
an available option for full floating rear axles and
locking diffs front and rear. The newer 80's are referred
 to as FZJ80's.

I've been hearing lately that toyota straight axles break the Birfield
joints in the front under severe torque. I was thinking of going to a
straight axle and I've got the axle off an 83 pu. I am wondering if you
guys could tell me if you've broke one (marfield, birfield)??? The
other day I was reading 4X4 power and read an article on the Warn
Birfield eliminator kit. Which basically emulates the chevy drive train
dana axles. If you have installed one of these conversion kits let me
know the pro's cons and otherwise. I'm running about 300 horse and I
havent had any problems with my IFS!!! yes IFS. What I don't want to do
is go to a straight axle for articulation and start breaking s#@t. Your
 response is appreciated.
P.S.- I know the Marfields are pretty expensive I'm looking for cost
justification on this mod so if you could let me know what you paid I'd
 appreciate it.

From: Adriano Feit Subject: Re: Bad Idle & Gas mileage
Hey Aaron can't help you with how to solve it because I got the same
problem. My engine (87 4runner 22re) will idle up to 1500-2000 rpm when
it is not in gear or the clutch is engaged. I messed with the adjusting
screw the throttle cable and spring mechanisms but notnin' helps.
Your computer diagnostic codes are 5 and 11 heres what the toyota 87
4runner repair manual has to say.
 5 - Oxygen Sensor signal -
" If you haven't changed your O2 sensor in a while you will probably
should, that could be contributing to bad gas mileage. NWOR and other auto
parts stores have a U.S. made ones for around $45
better than toyotas $130 price. I changed mine at 100k I've heard there
supposed to be replaced every 45k or so. The improvement in power and
 engine sound was very noticeable."
 11 - Switch signal.
Diagnosis - Neutral start switch ON (22re) or IDL point in the throttle
position sensor is OFF during diagnostic check.
Trouble area - 1. Throttle position sensor circuit 2. Throttle position
sensor 3. Neutral start switch (22re) 4. ECU

 I have a stock '91 4x4 extra-cab 3.0 pick up. I'm running 31x10.5R15 BFG
All-Terrain's. I race my truck over a lot of the Arizona dirt roads. My
speed varies from 35 mph to approximately 95 mph. I believe the highway
driving pressure is 31 psi? Is that right? Please correct me on that if
I'm wrong. My main question is what pressure should I be using when racing
on the dirt roads? I'm guessing that it should be closer to the highway
pressure than the lower pressures used for rock scrambling type activities.
I always race, never rock scramble. If any one can provide some insight on
the subject, that would be great. If anyone could shed some light on an
exact number, that'd be much appreciated as well! Thanks a lot!

Yes, they can leak. If it is, the leaking air will be coming out of the
differential vent. Happened to me when the backlasher adjuster lock came
loose, my backlash was .25" (1/4") instead of .009". The excess play and
movement wore out the O-rings. Reset the gears (Richmond 4.56), changed the
O-rings, and everything was fine. Tough gears!
