Picked up my Bilsteins today for the front of my 92 4Runner. I originally
had planned on buying them from NTB, but for some reason they decided to
double the price from last Friday (I was quoted $48/shock), to Saturday when
I went to pay for them so I could order them. The guy on Saturday first
quoted me $219 installed, but when I told him I wanted to install them
myself, he said they would be $99 each. "Hey - we're not a parts store" was
his reply. No wonder, at those prices. Guess I won't be going back there
 again...
Luckily the Pep Boys down the street could get them for me, $49 each.
The Sway-Away t-bars also arrived, but no instructions provided on
installation. Guess I'll venture over to ORC to check out some of the
write-ups. Anybody else have any tips? I plan on stopping by the dealer to
pick up a couple of those bolts in case I break mine trying to get them out.

Not to start anything here but if a club will not let you run with them
then you do not need that club, have your friend leave the club.
I used to do all my wheeling with Jeeps. I would help if they break,
they would help if I broke.
I once wheeled with a group of Jeeps, I had 33" tires, a locker up front
and stock gears, at the time it was the hardest trail I ever did, I did
ok, had to be winched once but then the steering arm broke. One Jeep
stayed with my truck and the rest left except on to drive me to town
(barstow) to hopefully find someone to weld it. got it welded went back
and fixed it and drove out of the trail.
They were not happy but you have to stick together, by the way, I never
met any of these people before and at first they did not even want a
toyota wheeling with them. I heard that they were surprised how well
the Toyota did even though I broke.
I wish I could see them now because I know my truck could out wheel them
anyday now. except those tight turning trails.
If you have the attitude of I do not want to wheel with Jeeps, Chevy's
etc. that will just tear our sport down over time. "can't we all just
 get along".

my 4Runner cant keep the vehicle at a steady rate of speed anywhere

Could this perhaps be because one of my EFI components (perhaps my

 Chris,
There are two of us here running the Warn kit and neither one of us has
had a problem...yet. We're both set up to do the 4+ trails and have
done so regularly since we installed the kits. Mine went in in August
98 and Jim VandeVen's went in during December 98.
Just to see how it performed I took it to a particular place here in
South Dakota where I had broken two Birfields to see how it would hold
up. It was very smooth with nary a hop or skip.
Here's hoping the Warn product holds up.
 Cheers,

From: PAUL PHILIPS Subject: re: arbitration hearing
The problem with my truck is some type of noise in the driveline that I've
been trying to get fixed for six months running. It sounds like a ringing
or chirping type of noise that has gotten louder with wear. It first was
not too loud but noticeable, then it has gotten louder. Most of the people
on the boards think it is a throwout bearing or input shaft problem
because when I step on my clutch the noise goes away until I release it.
Two Toyota dealers have looked at it. One thought it was the fuel
injectors but wouldn't fix the problem. The other did a valve job on it
and now it taps like crazy sometimes. So, I know its not the valves.
Anyway, I've called Toyota several times through their Customer Assistance
center and really gotten nowhere. They referred me to Gulf States Toyota
who is the distributor and they acted like I was trying to scam them into
buying the truck back. They didn't even arrange to have anyone even look
at it before saying this. So, hello BBB Autoline. Now, I've got to go to
an arbitration hearing next Thursday to try to get Toyota to fix the
problem. They're going say that it is normal, but two service managers
already told me it wasn't. They put in their response to my claim that
they wanted to repair the vehicle so that they would be released from any
repurchase liability. Well, that's whats been going on with it.

Just about any automotive machine shop has the press fixtures to do
this. There is an "at-home" way to do it, but it is kind of brutal, and
of course, the standard disclaimers apply:
Cover the bearing with a shop towel and whack the heck out of it with a
short-handled sledge. 99% of the time, this will crack both the inner
and outer races and you can just tap the inner race off of the shaft.
Installing the new bearing is just a matter of tapping the new one on
evenly with a hammer and punch.
Use caution! This is a dangerous procedure...Flying metal parts can get
into your eyes, hence the shop towel to catch "most" of the debris. Wear
 safety glasses when doing this.
Better yet, just take it to the machine shop :-) A lot of places will
press the bearing on for nothing if you buy the part from them.

I've been looking at winch bumper options for an '82 4WD and it looks
like the options are a Smittybuilt double tube, Pro Zap, or have it
custom welded. I would rather get an ARB, but ARB says their bull bar
has been discontinued for that year. My question is this, could a newer
model ARB be modified to fit an '82? Or would it be better to go with a
Pro Zap or Smittybuilt and if so, what kind of luck has anyone had with
one of these combinations. I'm looking at using a 9000 pound winch.

You can jump the fuel pump to turn on independent of the Air Flow Meter
to see if it starts faster in that condition. If jumping the fuel pump
connector does it, you may have a problem with the AFM.
The fuel pump test connector is a green or yellow connector located near
the AFM. It sometimes has a little rubber plug covering the terminals.

get your insurance co. to make sure you get some compensation for you
expensive mods? Say my truck gets totaled and they figure average retail on
 it is $5500. Well......a cherry 85 4runner with ARB's and approximately
$2000 in other goodies is worth more than that. Any thoughts or advice??

This happen to me with my 86 Truck. My insurance company "totalled" it. I
was hit head on by another Toyota truck. When they first offered a settlement
check for $5,500 is was shocked. I told them "no way", I have $6,200 worth of
upgrades and accessories!! So, I collected all the Truck Traders I could find
in 3 counties and carefully went through every single page of Toy truck ads
and found the ones that were very close to my truck in upgrades, mods, year,
model, etc. and cut out each page. I found most all my receipts (Thank God I
saved them!!!) and sent my insurance claims adjuster a package (certified
mail). I only sent the photocopies of my receipts and the Truck Traders
pages. Two weeks later they came back with their best and final offer of
$8,900, plus I got back my $250 deductible.
Advise: Save every single receipt that you spend on your truck that is an
 upgrade, modification, or accessory.
 Gnarls.

It is just a month after buying a new Diehard battery, and today,
my truck would not start. It had enough power to put the tailgate window
down, and the lights still worked, but when I turned the key, nothing.
The lights dimmed, it does not even turn over. In the fall, I replaced
the brass fittings on the starter, have had the alternator, and starter
checked, and bought a battery, hoping to cure the problem. No luck. If
anyone has a thought, it would be appreciated.

A friend of mine bought the proper tow hook bolts right from his local
Toyota dealer; costed him Cdn$19.00 for six. Apparently, they had to
search all over North America for him, but they eventually arrived after
about a month. He no longer had the bag, so I couldn't get a part
 number from him.
Also, I don't recommend buying those chrome hooks that somebody
mentioned; go for the black or anodized ones instead, as they will be
stronger. If anyone in the Vancouver, BC area needs a pair of hooks
(fits '85), I have a pair of Toyota hooks you can have for free; they
are the ones with the little hooks on the rear as well.

The same exact thing happened to me seven days after I got my Diehard.
Oddly enough the problem was a bit of corrosion on the bottom of the battery
cable lug. The only symptom exhibited was it wouldn't start, everything else
worked great. After I took it into Sears and they initially troubleshot it to a
bad starter. After putting in a new starter (At a ripe price of $200.) it did the
same thing. They then cleaned the lugs and it worked great. I made them
put the old starter back in and they didn't charge me a thing.> It is just a month after buying a new Diehard battery, and today,> my truck would not start. I dunno the LR but I suppose the setup is similar to the Niva? If so, then
when you lock the central diff the problem is back, you will get a bind in

one wheel in the air, it's going to get all the power right?

Alex, That's the comcept, but you're in "all time 4x4". If you use your
Discovery as Mom's taxi or school bus it's fine. Just don't try to lock the
central diff. as you might "crash" some teeth. Basically, I don't understand
the need to insrall different ratio R&P rear and front, unless you have
 different diameter wheels.

I'd like to add to my problem description that
It also leans a bit towards the left when in 2WD
but with the hubs still engaged although not nearly
as much as when in 4WD. If I disengage the hubs
 the problem goes away.
Now I'm leaning towards the idea that it could be
 a Birfield/bearing problem.
Haven't recieved any follow-ups yet but hope to!

this piece. Buyer pays shipping. Please let me know if you are interested.

Keep all the invoices for the stuff you bought and added to the truck. If
you paid anyone to install them, keep the invoices as well. If you installed
the stuff yourself, try and keep a log of the time you spent on it. And,
more important than all, take LOTS of pictures of all the trick stuff you
got! If you haven't done it yet, call them and see that they have to say on
the subject.. I had no problem insuring my rig which is listed in books at
like 1000$ for close to 5000$ because of all the mods & restoration

Subject: FJ-60 Spring leaves and wheel well cover FS
 Hi all,
I have a few more things to add to my list of stuff to sell at this point. I
recently ordered some parts and mistakenly got a wheel well cover for the
passenger side rear wheel well that was brown instead of gray...I
misunderstood the item description, and it is a no-return part. If you need a
replacement brown cover for your FJ-60, I'll sell you this one new in the
factory bag for $85 plus shipping (OBO)...I paid $105 for it plus shipping. I
am also replacing my rear stock leaf sprinngs because a few leaves were
broken. Since I didn't want to take the time to look for replacement leaves,
I have just decided to get new ones. However, if you need replacement leaves
for your rear FJ-60 springs, drop me a line...I'm selling the remaining
springs, which are in good shape, for $10 ea. for the top 2 leaves and $5 each
for the rest. Please e-mail for availability. Thanks for looking...

I've done a 283 swap into my Toy, lots of power compared to the 22R. Now, a
 215... there's an engine I haven't seen in quite a while. I put one into a
Triumph Spitfire about 15 years ago... that car ran GOOD afterwards. Very
light engine being all aluminum and all, but a little lacking in the power
department and aftermarket hop-up parts are not as readily available as
other engines. I haven't checked if the parts for the Rover V-8s will work.
In the 30-odd years since Buick sold the engine to British Leyland I am sure
there have been significant changes. Something to look into, if you can find
a decent one. Should get a solid 150-200 hp out of one though without the
weight penalties of a different V-8 (may even lose some weight over the 22R)
