Hey'all. We're (the unwashed fellow Toyota drivers) are planning a day trip
to the Mojave Desert on Saturday, February 27th, and your'all invited to
 partake.
We'll be at the McDonald's in Mojave (the city of...go to
http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py and type in Mojave, CA to find out where
exactly it is) at about 9:30 am. CB channel 27.
The trails there are as hard or as easy as you'd like to make them, as
there's by-passes for literally all the really hard sections. BUT, 4wd is
needed (so no two-wheel drives, please). Stock vehicles WILL make it, but
"built"-owners will enjoy the run too. Make sure you have at least one
attachment point in the front and the back of your vehicle (be it a tow
hook or receiver hitch), in case you have to be pulled up or off of
something. Bring a camera too, as this area of the desert is very scenic.
Any questions? Email me at bigblue@anacapa.net .

Haven't tried it yet (my 35's are begging for tickets too), but a
colorful "good 'ole boy" I know bought a single slightly-used 18 wheeler mud
flap and cut it in half with a table saw. Says it's the perfect length and
width now for each of the tires on his rolling-junkyard "mud bomber", and
didn't cost much. (Don't know if he retained the chrome lady or not, it
 would have been appropriate!)

 Hi Guys,
I was catching up on my digest when I saw this so i thought I would
give my 2 cents. I noticed someone mentioned the lo-jac system. I work
for ADT security and we have the carcop system there. I can tell you
lo-jac you wont find inside the car because they place it inside the
frame rail. With our system carcop I know it is inside the vehicle and
uses GPS for the tracking. It not only can be set to go off at the
opening of a door but can be set if the car moves a certain speed or
travel over a certain radius. When you alarm gets set off it will
silently dial our monitoring station and we will contact the car, the
owner, and the pd. I find that these systems work great unless the GPS
doesn't give you a good fix. Even then we can contact the car and
disable the starter or the engine, and if that don't work off goes the
siren and the flashers and we keep tracking till we get a good location
then notify proper authorities. Hope this helped someone.

Regarding those mudflaps to cover the 35's, I found re-drilling the factory
mudflap holes works well enough to
avoid Johnny Law's wrath. Mine's second generation, the flaps are held by
 three screws YMMV.
Also have a question regarding my timing (second try, hope this works). I
put in a new top end about 30,000 miles ago. Ported/ polished LC
Engineering head for 22RE, with the works on a factory oversized bottom-end
done a couple months before the head. When installing had the timing chain
off a tooth, so it ran like a dog. Fixed the problem, took it to a toy
specialty shop to have the TPS adjusted right. Truck has run well ever
 since. But...
The timing is advanced 12* to run well. At factory 5* it won't run. My
paranoid brain wonders if all those times I adjust the valves, setting the
marker to zero, if it's really TDC. Do I need to take the distributor out?
Would adjustable cam gear be beneficial? I am confused and looking to get
it all dialed in. It will still light up the 33's
 thanks for any help- Marc

I can guarentee that we do more than just mud up here in Canada. There are
rocks too, along with gravel, dirt, logs, etc..
 Shane
I think you only do mud in Canada and you don't need tons of
 articulation
for mud. Actually too much articulation kills mud performance since you
have to run very soft suspension which will induce wheel hop. You need a
hard suspension that let you dig deep to the mud. Mud needs big
 horsepower
and monster tires, not gearing and articulation.

What I've done before is to hook up a relay to the defroster switch to kick over
and energize the ignition starter only when the defroster is on. So everytime
you want the starter to crank, the defroster switch must be on. After the motor
starts, turn off the defroster. You can pretty much use any switch on the dash
 as the "ghost" switch.
Another suggestion would be to get an on-off-on toggle switch and have the true
fuel pump wire on one side and on the other, have a fake fuel pump wire that has
a low enough fuse that will blow shortly after starting.

Or, even> have two switches inline, so both have to be in the right orientation to> allow the truck to start up.

recomend running the stock rubber stops, my kit is the same one the run on
their prerunner and in the past on their race truck. The axles use the same
joints as stock but have the shaft lengthend a couple of ". On the cool
side the new cro-moly shaft costs $325 as opposed to Downey and WCOR more
expensive units and T-100 axles can be used instead, but here in TX T-100
axles proved to be rare! The ride is supposed to be way better then stock
esp with bilstiens, i opt for single 10" heim jointed ends because my
4runner is also the daily driver and does't need the duals (yet). In the
back i'm doing a mazda/toy spring conv. with Doech tech mv-12.

I've got an alarm but mainly got it for keyless entry and extra outputs to hook
up some toys such as remote start. I like the older VSE sirens because they are
louder than the usual DEI ones. A backup battery would be good to have because
on DEI systems (i.e., Viper, Python, Sidewinder) once the power is pulled to the
brain, the ignition kill is also disabled.
I have an on-off toggle output left but can't think of what to hook up to it.
 Maybe the lights.

I'm in favor of a solid axle this time, there are a lot of the IFS
stickers out there, I even have it on my truck, and my homepage as a link
to sign up for the Toy list and Toyota 4x4 webring. I think it's only fair
to all of us solid axle guys to make one with a solid front axle too. I
believe there was a solid axle sticker already done and ready to print,
could you repost that sticker to the list? Thanks

 Tim,
Try Alloy Wheel in Roseville. I had my polished Weld Racing wheels done
there a couple of years ago - they actually powder coat the clear coat on.
Looked good. Cost $25/wheel. I just heard from a Tires Plus guy at the
World of Wheels that Alloy Wheel is now offering an extensive warranty on
their coating, even on polished wheels, something they didn't offer when I
 had mine done.

I think it's pretty much the best of both worlds, no wrap, lots of flex.
Alternately, I've got a decent setup on my truck, easier to make, but not
quite as wrap-preventing as Jay's. There's a pic or two on my page.
Both require welding; are you comfortable with that, or are you seeking

I had 4" NWOR springs in the back of my truck. Had nothing but problems with
them. I ran the Rubicon with a 3" piece of log tie-wired to the frame behind
the shackles to keep them from going flat, the "over-load" leaf kept
twisting out. Also they are a very stiff spring, they would "drop" fine but
did not "compress" well. NWOR did warranty the springs and I got my money
back. I am now running 4" Skyjacker and have had no problems with them, they
are pretty "flexy", I bought the "softride version". In order to get a lot
of "flex" you really need to go with a longer, flatter spring. In other
words move the front mounts forward and lengthen the spring perches on the
rear end to help get rid of "axle wrap"

Ok, I really don't want this to turn into another big debate on the list, but
I was just wondering.... If it's only fair to have a separate sticker for
those with a solid axle, is it also only fair if we have separate stickers for
4Runners and pick-ups? And what about Land Cruisers? IMHO, having separate
stickers for "IFS and Solid Axle guys" serves to divide the list. Maybe I'm
making too big of a deal about it, but it's just my opinion. If anybody wants

This may be true, however, you're going to have to explain to me how to attach a spark plug wire with a big-arse boot on one end to the coil, which has a completely different end (and on my '93, the ends aren't particularly easy to swap). Second, the thief is going to have to figure out exactly why the car won't start, and then take the time to jury-rig a new coil wire. Finally, if you're stealing a car, making a getaway on three or five cylinders isn't exactly an appealing prospect. The coil-wire method is just a quick and dirty "Road Warrior" method. It's been my experience that (1) really good and determined car thieves can get past ANY alarm system; (2) people ignore alarm sirens, making the deterrence factor rather small; and (3) simple, cheap, hidden, and unexpected seem to be the best anti-theft device. Did I mention pulling the EFI relay as another method?

From: Scott Ellinger Subject: Re: Rim Bolt Pattern> Do Toyotas share the rim bolt pattern with any other vehicle. I have heard> that maybe ch*vy or j**p. Thanks.> Nearly any six-bolt wheel will fit a six-lug Toy (assuming we're talking 4x4
 Toys, not 2WD dually Toys).
Chevy rims will fit the bolt pattern, but the center hub hole isn't big enough
 on most stock Chevy rims.
Jeep six-lug (older Wagoneers, Cherokees, etc.) should fit, but might have the
 same center hole problem.
Nissan six-lug (2WD too) will fit fine, as far as I know.
Dodge six-lug (Dakota, Durango) will *not* fit; it's a 6-on-4.5 or something
similar. Too small. Irrelevant side note: the pilot's too small too... :)

Someone added a few thoughts about thives getting past alarms, people not
caring about sirens any more, etc....
I've seen a few good methods of stopping thieves, but if someone wants your
truck bad enough, they'll show up with a winch-equipped flatbed trailer
(or a rolloff wrecker) and take it anyway.
Although this doesn't work in a whole lot of countries, the only true
method of stopping thieves is what an old locksmith told me one day,
after asking if I wanted something to stop a thief, or him, from getting
 at my stuff.
"The only way to protect it for sure is to stand over it with a Smith
 & Wesson."
Even that doesn't work against an armed thief.
Some of the better methods I've seen include:
 Dual fuel tanks, one's missing.
Electric fuel pump, separate shutoff switch.
Separate shutoff for ignition wire to coil.
Removing necessary parts (like the coil wire)
But back to the topic of what some thieves will do... I happen to (lucky
 me) work with a couple of past criminals (night work, in a warehouse;
the boss has pretty low standards) and one guy told me tales of stealing
 Saleen Mustangs...
They had a second steering column, complete from the wheel to the rack,
and they'd get into the car, swap their column for the one in the car,
and drive off. Once they got it home, they'd drill the lock out of the
original, put new locks in the car, and sell it.
 The Club? Didn't matter.
Those column cuff things? No problem.
 Steering interlock? Yeah, right.
 Transmission interlock? Not any more.
Computer interlock? Nope, it's even got the "right" key.
This column swap trick was apparently a whopping five minutes worth of
work on a slow day, for two guys working together.
And Toyota trucks? Some of the easiest ignition locks to defeat in the
country, he says. So why steal Mustangs? Easier to unload than a Toy.
Keep in mind that if a thief really wants to swipe your truck, he'll
hang out and watch what you do (so he can undo it) as you're parking
it. Even if it means he has to leave and come back, that's not a big
 deal.
So, in all this doom and gloom, how do you protect your Toy from a
thief? Park next to something with a higher value, and/or that's
easier to steal. Pickup? Put it next to a newer SUV; they're all
over anyway. 4Runner? A sports car should take the relative
attractiveness right off of it. Land Crusher? Man... as easy to
steal as a pickup, but easier to sell, worth more, and probably
insured to the point that after a week, nobody's going to even look
for it any more... better find something like a 'Vette or a Hummer
to park next to, and you're still running a huge risk.
