Buggy springs and shackle reversal are not needed on solid axle toys.
Using 1" longer shackles, Alcan springs, crossover steering and Rancho
9012 shocks I can get over 20" of front travel. I have seen a similar
setup with over 24" of travel. You don't need buggy springs to get lots
 of travel.
Why bother with a shackle reversal? That's for Jeeps, Land Cruisers and
Sammys that all have the shackle up front from the factory. Toy pickups
already have the shackle in the rear so a shackle reversal is a step
 backward.

Subject: Rear Disc Brakes for 85' -Q!
 Hello List!
I have been ponderering the idea of Disc brakes for the rear of my 85'
x-cab. I'm tired of not having any brakes when I go wheeling after
playing in the mud. I usually do all my serious wheeln' first before I
 dare to enter the pit.
 My questions are:
 1) Is there a kit? and if not, is there some type of conversion from
 another source?
 2) I know a few people on the list doing the conversion from
fabrication of there own. I could use some helpfull hints and
shared ideas to be able to do the conversion on my rig.
 **********************************************************************
I am also looking for a Warn 8274 that has been parted out. I need
some of the old parts to rebuild mine. Or I will have to turn to Warn
for an upgrade kit for mine. Please let me know if anyone wnats to
 part with an older model.

toolbox, rollbars, or a canopy in the back. I like the idea of a toolbox,
obviuously to put my tools and spare parts in when i 4-wheel. But the
rollbars will save my life and look good too! The reason i want a canopy is
because i usually camp when i 4-wheel, and i think it would be great to
climb into the back rather than having to screw around with a tent. I was
hoping by writing this to get anyones opinion on the subject. Thanks.

Go with a toolbox.A rollbar(bed bar)won save you if your truck breaks,
and you left your tools and spare parts at home, cuz you had no place to
put them. Those bed mounted bars might help you a bit in a rollover, but
an in cab cage would be far better.
A canopy is nice, but the make you more top heavy and the reduce
 visibility.
Find a bar that will work with a toolbox. Some of the single lid units
will work with a bar.I've seen it done.

From: Rafael Pondoc Subject: Re: Car alarm in 4runner
A car's audible alarm is basically a cry for help. It is your truck calling out
to you, specifically as the owner, to do something and stop the bad guys from
doing their dastardly deed. Yes it may attract other peoples attention, but
those other people are not obligated in any way to intervene. I have seen many
times car alarms going off in parking lots but nobody responds.
Therefore one solution to the problem is purchasing an alarm system that has a
wireless paging option, like the Viper system.
One night 4 years ago I had to park my Cherokee a good distance from my
apartment because of a social event in one of the units. Their guests took most
of the parking spaces. At about 11:30 PM, I was awakened from a deep slumber by
my pager. I could not hear the alarm siren from my vehicle unless I open my
apartment window and strain my ears. Upon hearing it, I quickly put on some
clothes, took my CCW Glock 26, and 2 extra 10 round magazines and proceeded to
walk the distance to my car. As I approached my car, there was this guy walking
in from the road to the apartment complex entrance. I kept my distance and
assessed the situation. He then claimed that he saw two guys running away after
they broke my passenger side window and he gave chase towards the road. Yeah
right! He then went inside his car which was parked right next to mine and sped
away. I then proceeded to inspect my jeep and called 911.
If it hadnt been for my pager, that bad guy would know that nobody will respond
to the car's alarm. He would probably take his time to defeat the car alarm and
 take my jeep.
Now with my TRD Xtracab, I not only have the paging option I also have the Warn
Away feature where in anybody getting too close to my car gets warned by the car
 alarm.
By the way, when you do come to your truck's rescue you'd better be "equpped"
and know when to use it. In most states you can not use lethal force to defend
 property.

I think your talking about "light Bars" The 3" tubing bars in the back
of pickup beds? They are useless in a rollover. They are made from
exhaust tubing and offer no protection at all. They are just there to
 hold up the lights.
If you want protection get one of the incab roll bars.

 I'm with you about that 3rd door. I traded in a '96 S-10 4X2 for my
black truck and I really miss that 3rd door! It was a really handy thing to
 have.
Having said that, a couple of things that I don't miss are the
rattles and what I perceive to be a weaker cab structure in the S-10. The
3rd door had a low grade rattle to it; supposedly this is common and usually
incurable among the S-10's. In fact, the S-10 rattled more overall than my
'86 Toyota. Plus, I figure that any time you make an opening in the cab
structure larger, you weaken the structure. It works that way with ships -
put a big enough hole in the side and she'll break in half.

First, it depends on what you mean by radical. Will you drive this truck on the
road? What type of wheeling do you do? What size lift and tires do you plan
to end up with? What are you fabrication capabilities....or what do you plan
to spend to have someone make this setup?>Now, I got buggy springs plans for the rear. As for the front, what is>the best way to get some radical flex? Anybody has>done or has any idea what would be involved in doing a shackle reversal on a>Toyota pickup?
I live in the center of some of the best rock-crawling innovation here in the
Phoenix area and most everyone I have seen running leaf springs up front
is running the shackle on the rear.....doesn't make it right.....just an observation.
I don't know all the effects of the two shackle designs, but I'll throw out a few.
On compression, a rear shackle setup will move the axle backwards. This is
our biggest headache in that the tire ends up hitting the fender. However, on
extension the axle droops and moves forward, preserving approach angle.
A vehicle with front shackles has the axle move backward under droop. The
axle also kicks forward under compression which makes the ride over bumps
 worse.
Rear shackles also require long spline driveshafts, but may be less forgiving
 on
u-joint angle depending on the particular setup.
The addition of longer shackles (if done) up front eats up approach angle quickly.
I may be missing something, but I think you'll find rear shackles are still superior.
 Dunno.....anybody else got ideas?

Yes the truck will be driven on the road. Mostly to get to the trail &
around town and as a backup incase my commuter car fails. The missing links
and buggies have something in common, you can easily fab a little something
that will lock them out when hitting pavement. As for lift & tires, I plan
on running 35-36" TSLs with a 2-3" bodylift and 4" springs f/r, perhaps more
lift if it doens't fit. I hear the pre-84 models have larger wheelwells, so
I will probably go for one of those to save some headache in the fitment
 department.
As for my fab capabilities and money to spend, I'll manage. I do not
currently weld but my best pal takes care of this for me, free of charge.
He's very talented and certified. As for the money to spend, well any
buildup is bound to cost alot, and I'm ready and fully aware of what is
 implicated.
Here's what I'll do. I'll try the 4" springs with the stock setup and see
what comes of it. I'll try it out in the spots my Samurai would leave me
stranded with the feets in the air, and see if I need more. I'll keep the
shackle reverse/missing links for later...>I may be missing something, but I think you'll find rear shackles are still
 superior.
I don't find either of them superior. All I'm saying is that if I want to
setup a crazy suspension up front which will have equal travel to the rear,
the back shackle will either make it impossible or very expensive. I'll
see... As I said I'll try out the stock setup and see how I like it.
Thanks for the input, it's very constructive... Hadn't though of the
 approach angle thing..

 Andrew,
I don't know what your objectives or expectations are for your swap. I assume
it's for greater articulation for 4-wheeling. I don't want to alarm you, but
if the AllPro you're referring to is the one in CA near Palm Springs, my
friend just had his 91 Toy Truck done there. He had some unexpected problems:
 1) The front shocks where not the right ones, not enough compression.
 2) Agreed upon list of things to be done where not done.
 3) Some things were done that he didn't expect and didn't want.
 4) While they were welding the shock towers, they accidentally fried his ARB
 compressor.
 5) Several design elements were not well engineered.
 6) AllPro stated that they ramped the truck and it did 950 on a 20 degree
ramp. We ramped it here on a 23 degree ramp and it would not do 600.
In fairness to AllPro, they did offer to rectify all problems with no hassle,
but since he lives in Phoenix, logistically it wasn't easy. I don't think it
will ramp 950 on a 20 degree ramp, period. If you want to talk to my friend,
I'm sure he would not mind. He can give a little more info on specific
details and maybe what he would do differently now that he has done the
conversion. Just let me know and I'll contact him. If I were having that
type of work done, I would be very very specific on the agreed design, parts,
job and price. That's a lot of time and money to spend in one place and not
 be completely satisfied.

Mine may be a different setup than you friend but when I put my truck up
on a 20 degree ramp I had the rear tire go up the ramp about 6" before
the right rear tire lifted up. That's well over 1,000.
In other news I installed a new set of 35" BFG's yesterday. That's gives
me a full inch more ground clearance. I hope it's not too tall now :-) I
also plan to install All Pro's new skid plate/crossmember this week.
Anyone have a idea on where to get good mud flaps? I need to cut/make
something to cover these things up a little or I am going to get a
 ticket soon.

What is so expensive and hard about leaving the stock shackle where it is?
I dont get what you are talking about, everyone leaves that shackle in

Ive seen some very extreme rigs and "None"of them run a front mounted

front spring with the shackle in the front ...

I would not want to put buggy springs on my truck. Running 35s with 4-5"

the extra body roll induced by buggy springs and missing link shackles all

and not your 33s? they are the same width.....

Why do the shackle reversal? Usually the shackle swap is done on a truck
that started out with the shackle in the front. If the leaf spring has
an arch to it it is better to have the shackle in the rear. If I
rember your first post you had a Samuri, you can install a missing link
on the Toyota with the shackle at the rear just like the Sami was.

Mine may be a different setup than you friend but when I put my
 truck up
on a 20 degree ramp I had the rear tire go up the ramp about 6"
 before
the right rear tire lifted up. That's well over 1,000.
In other news I installed a new set of 35" BFG's yesterday.
 That's gives
me a full inch more ground clearance. I hope it's not too tall
 now :-) I
also plan to install All Pro's new skid plate/crossmember this
 week.
Anyone have a idea on where to get good mud flaps? I need to
 cut/make
something to cover these things up a little or I am going to get
 a
 ticket soon.

Well, I wouldn't rip it out if you have one. Sure, alarms aren't perfect.
There is NO sure fire way to make sure your vehicle will not get stolen.
Heck, the newest thing I've heard of is for thieves to just pull up with a tow
truck and tow vehicles away. It only takes a couple minutes to hook it up and
take it away and few people question it unless they are the owner or know the
owner. The main reason I got my Viper system was for deterrence. I'm hoping
that if a would-be thief sees my truck sitting there, alarm light flashing,
sitting next to a non-alarmed vehicle, he/she will go for the non-alarmed
vehicle instead. Not to mention the discount off of my insurance for having
an alarm with a starter-kill circuit....

Not really, Steve, they have a 12V out put wire that can be tied into the
Power antenna trigger lead to move it into transmit position, but range can
 still be a problem.
You can tie into a cell phone, if you want to spend the bucks on a
Alpine Alarm, Alpine Cell phone, and a few other Alpine goodies. It gives
you the choice of allowing the the alarm to go off or just autodialing the
cell phone to a phone number. Just think someone is in the car trying to
take the stereo and they here a voice a foot away coming out of the phone!
 Again, pricey!

I recall this topic kinda being covered before but my problem does not follow the same symptoms.
A couple of weeks ago my key would not work on the passenger door, No problem, thought it was ice.
Then last week my rear tailgate lock won't work, (can't turn the key).
My key ring only has a couple of other keys on it, so it is not that heavy. The driver's door is still working (thank god) I have also tried other keys I have for the vehicle and they don't work either.
I've lubed it up with a little graphite lock grease but nothing. I guess my next step is to take the inside panel apart but before I try that I thought I would get some suggestions. I thought it might be ice but it has been above freezing a couple of days and still no luck.!
Any suggestions, maybe I just need to put some penetrating oil and more graphite lube??
 Thank you in advance

of the time but I would still be very interested in anything you find out.

They don't stick out of The fenders that much, just about an inch. But
the laws around here require that the top half of the tire tread be
covered by mud flaps in the rear. So I am thinking of some sort of
removable type thing, I guess I will have to cut some out of some kind
of rubber mat stuff. I want to be able to take then off for trail use so
I don't tear them off on the rocks.
The 35's are the same width as the 33's were but the truck is taller now
with the lift and with the taller tires you see more of the tire. It
 ticket bait now.

It depends on hoow nuch flex you want. Staying with a leaf spring setup
use the rear springs on the front with a 2 in extension on a missing
link shackle. This will also put the axle 2in forward. For more flex
again add a second shackle and radius arm on the fixed spring eye so you
have shackles on each end of the spring pack. Both setups work great.

From: "Joe & Soosie" Subject: Right front driveshaft locked
 I need help with a problem. I have a 94 Toyota 4x4 w/ AT, 2 years ago I put
manual hubs on. All was fine until I had a TrueTrac put in the front diff.
Now, the driver's side front half shaft spins freely when the hub is
unlocked. The passenger side is locked to the diff w/ the hub unlocked, when
I turn it by hand the front driveshaft turns. When I locked the hub, I
couldn't turn either the half shaft or the front driveshaft.
So I need some help diagnosing the problem (something I'm not too good at,
but learning). I was thinking (hoping) it's just the hub. I thought the
driver's side was the side w/ the collar that moved when vacuum is applied,
and don't understand -- aside from the hub -- how the pass. shaft can be
 locked w/ the diff.
All else is fine, 4wd works. I've put about 1000 miles on since the install,
so I'm not afraid that anything's toasted.
 Thanks for your help.
