This is not necessarily true. Junkyards such as TAP and other Toyota only
type places just know how much some people are willing to pay for these
things. As long as people keep buying them at these prices, why lower them?
It definately takes more work, but try calling around to all of your local
yards and asking if they have any Toyotas. You will usually find a few, and
the parts will be cheap. Besides, going to the junkyard is a great way to
blow a Saturday morning. I usually spend a few hours walking around and
broadening my vehicle knowledge. I am surprised at the number of people that
have never even been to the junkyard!
I recently found a complete power steering setup for $50. Try getting that
price from a discount Toyota dealer :-) The local Toyota-only yard quoted me
almost $500 for PS!!!

I left a message on the voicemail at Summit Offroad
and Glen returned my call. We spoke briefly about the IPF lights that have
been discussed a bit lately. It sounds like a good light and I think I
would like to get a set for my 95 4Runner, but Glen does not think they will
work. He's not sure if the harness is H4 compatible?
I told him that it was just a replacement bulb and
not the entire light assembly and he sounded confused. On their web page
they show the bulbs, but are these just replacements for some of the
aftermarket lights like Hella?
If my bracket is not H4 compatible, then what needs
to be done to be able to run H4 lights.
Does anyone have these lights on a 95 model Runner?

OK, who knows where Jamacia, VT is? Anyone up near there??? I've got a lead
on a 1985 4x4 P/U that's not running (and I think missing wheels/tires), and
would like somebody to check it out. I'll pay for the truck, and you can
have some parts that I don't need for your troubles (anyone need
sheetmetal??) I know it doesn't run but it had the trans/transfer case, and
both axles.
E-mail me priveately if we can work something out.

Subject: Seats, and wheel offset...
Does anyone know if you can make the passenger seat on a 1st gen. 4Runner
slide back and forth while sitting in it, like the driver's seat? It has
no movement at all other than tilting the back.??? Maybe a new mechanism
underneath is required??
Next question...
Why is it that the track width, (right terminology??) on the rear of the
same 1st gen runner
is an inch narrower than the front? It looks funny, and I would like to do
something to even it out, but the studs for the rears are too short for the
thickness of an aluminum rim, plus a 1/2 inch wheel spacer...
Any help is always more than appreciated!

How did you find out about the Toyota 4x4 Mailing List:
www.off-road.com
General info about your vehicle, self, etc.:
I've been wheeling for a little over 2 years now. All of my wheeling
experience has been with Suzuki Samurais (and predecessors) but I'm
currently looking to buy a Toyota for this summer. I'm here for input :)
Why a Toy and not a Zuk? I got 2 hours of commuting to do each day and
most of the trails are far from home. The zuk not liking to be riden at 100
km/h (when it's 63hp of raw power manages to get it there) is not a very
good option. I've been using a zuk for over a year for commuting and I've
had failure of about every part (both diffs, tcase, tranny, engine, rad,
heater, exaust, alt, starter, wheel bearings, kingpins, springs, driveshaft
slip yoke, u-joints (LOTS OF THOSE), etc etc etc. A few friends of mine have
Toyotas and they almost never have to wrench compared to me. It's a joke,
since i've been commuting with the Zuks, there is not a single week I got to
work without spending an evening or the weekend having to fix things.
Furthermore, in the type of wheeling I do (mud, mud and some more mud),
wheelbase is not as important as tire size. 33s fit on the Toy without lift
if I'm not mistaken, while a Zuk with 33" looks like a monster and is sure
to attract the cops around here, which can't stand a lifted Zuk.
Enough about me now...

Brown's Toyota was selling them as low as $695 the last time I checked,
which was the last time I had a non A/C 4Runner (2 years ago). But they
do go up from their depending upon year and model of your truck. The
problem with older trucks is they might be forced to sell the new A/C
systems converted to the new refrigerant which will drive up the cost.

Chris,
You can get "Equal" at most major truck stops that offer tire repair. I
got mine through our local Firestone dealer. For 35x12.50x15 you need
an "E" bag which is 4 ounces. Each bag cost me $8. You can also have
"Equal" direct injected if whoever is doing it has the equipment and
then they just inject 4 ounces. I don't have the price for that.

Just another '84-85 housing.........
No, I had been running some shims up front for positive caster and had been
playing with pinion angles and caster after my crossover swap. I recently swapped
in a new axle housing with a few mods and upgrades and was able to finally
remove the shims I had been running. I had too much positive caster with the
old shims.
For you tall lift guys, cutting and turning the knuckles is a possibility. I
even have
an old Off-Road mag at home somewhere that showed how a shop did the mod.
The biggest pain in doing it would be dealing with the boxed trussing on the
axle housing. However, starting with an early un-trussed housing would make the
job easier.

I have an 84 Chevy 350 in my Toy. I am only using the water pump,
alternator, and power steering pump for accesories. I need to see if it
is possible to switch from the long water pump to the short style.
The people I have talked to so far have told me that I need different
power steering brackets (or the older style pump and brackets),
different alternator brackets, double-groove water pump pulley and
double-groove crank pulley.
How much clearnace will I gain going to a short pump. I really need
some more room on the front of this toy to fit a fan between the engine
and radiator. I could use a pusher fan, but I don't think this will be
effective enough for an off-road truck.

I may have mine turned by a friend if it needs it. He has the equipment, and
only charges like $150 for it.
Since I am starting with the earlier housing (81), anybody looked into

Retro'ing this in would probably be difficult, and VERY expensive. You'll
need a whole new center console, at least.

I wouldn't call it a "novelty", I find it very useful for warming up the
entire cabin space. But, the loss of storage in the console is a drag.

Chris,
You remove all current weights and just run the Equal internally in the
tire. Equal has a chart that tells you how much powder to put in
depending upon the size of your tire. 33s may or may not need a 4 ounce
"E" bag.

Have you checked the tranny switch? Crawl underneath the passenger side,
pull off the connector, and stick a chunk of wire across the contacts. Turn
your key to the ON position, and check the lights.

Yep it's possible, I think you gain about 1.2" or so - I ran that combo in
my '84 with an '85 chev engine (see: http://www.off-road.com/~bwiencek ).
I had about 1" of clearance for a std. clutchless fan.

Depndes on your needs, I used the double groove pulley setup to run the
A/C, the P/S and the alternator. All your accessories will need to be
moved back the same amount as the pulley groves moved. What alternator
and P/S pump are you using (toy or GM?)

We also have 3 kids, comfort in the rear is no problem. But, it's a pain
getting in and out if you plan to do this a lot. If this is your only
vehicle, I'd recommend you look for a '90+ with 4 doors. Also, try to get a
rear heater.

Hey, yes you did! Actually I did!
Well, I have rebuilt many cars from the junkyard. Usually to save on
sheet metal costs.
But, I am wise to the way of junkyards, ever since Monkey Wards replaced
a broken stalk on my wifes car for $13 (new from Ford) during a safety
inspection and that very day, I bought a used one from a yard for $10. I
brought the stalk in to Moneky Wards, and they said they got a new one
from Ford. And I was looky stupid with a grimy overpriced stalk ;-)
On the other hand, I picked up a used Toyota Cressida steering box from
a yard for $35 that I will be using for crossover steering.

This may sound cheap (or tacky), but to me the best
thing is to hit a junk yard and get a horn (or two) from some Caddy,
domestic full sized truck, or the like.
On my 94 Xtracab I put a horn from a F**d F150 and
one from a Ch**y S10. I like to be a little different, and it sounded very
good. You will probably want to use a relay, but they are very easy to hook
up. On my 94 I had to partially remove the front grill to get enough
clearance to mount everything.
I also hate the horn on my 95 4Runner and I'll
probably check out the junk yards for a late model Beemer next week. I like
the sound of the horn on those and they are real loud.
Best of all, I paid about $15 for both of the horns
on my 94.

the Hella Twin Supertone

Subject: Front suspension droop
Hi there poeple,
I'm new to the list, so if there is anything wrong with my way of doing
things, please email me privatly and tell me. Thanks.
Well here goes my first question to the list. As I stated in my bio, I'm
buying a Toy for this summer, most likely a pickup model, possibily 4Runner.
I want to get one of the pre'86 models to get a solid front axle. Sooo I got
a question..
My rear suspension flex is pretty much planned. I will put some 4-5"
lift springs along with some long & flat buggy springs with some kind of
locking system to keep them from opening on the road.
Now my idea for the front is to do something I got from the zuk crowed
but after talking to a pal who has a Toy, I found out the front suspension
is setup with a rear shackle rather than the 'usual' front shackle systems.
I suppose a buggy leaf system up front would create some major driveline
problems, unless someone can tell me the opposite (?)
All comes down to this. How much work would it to make a shackle reverse
up front on the Toy? The whole deal would be to perhaps drop the the
suspension mounts at the same time, which would permit me to use less arch
on my springs to prevent axle wrap and, more importantly, to be able to use
a double shackle system up front.
Anybody ever done a shackle reverse (or would we call it a rereverse?
perhaps verse? :) ) on a solid axle toy or would know what problems I would
encounter? If there are any other ideas to get a radical syspension up
front, send it my way, I'm exploring all my possibilities...
Alex.

I can vouch for the Grant XL, an awesome radio, albeit a tad on the large

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, the wiring kit is junk. The switch is really

Jody:
The 92-95 4Runners take an H5 or 9004 bulb, not the H4. The H4 bulb won't
fit into the headlight assembly, it has a metal flange base, but the H5 is a
ceramic/plastic base, totally different.
