A piece of bark has now served as wiring insulation for the EFI fuel injectors
to keep them from shorting on the fuel rail for 3 years...
I once took it out & tried to get some *real* wire loom in there - never
worked as good as the bark so the bark went back in.

I plan on welding a 3/8" steel block onto the driver's side perch to make it
equal in height to the passenger side then just order two identically arched
 springs for the front.

 Hey Jay,
I have a toyota 89 4x4 V6, with a Rancho lift and full detroit rear, ez
 in the front, 33's, 4.88's.
I have not kept up with the discussion on the best way to put disc brakes
on the rear. I like the idea that you employed on your truck.
So far I have located a set of calipers off of a Seville, and a pair of
rotors from a chevy, What else do I need?
I looked at your scanned in mounts for the calipers, and I think that I
can copy your design. Should I try to get the caliper mount pins off of
another donor car? Or should I just try GM? I believe that I will need
pieces of the Seville cables to fab up the new E-brake lines, but that is
not hard. I also think that I can make the hard lines to mate to the
 calipers.
Do I need a 2,5,10 lb residual in-line valve for the back? Are there any
hints that you could help me with? This weekend I will have all the
parts that I think I will need, this is my daily driver. Could I
complete the swap in a Saturday? Or is there other problems that need to
 be addresssed?
 Thanks for the help,

I used a trick to loosen rusted brake fittings on beat up cars back in
high school days when I did not have the money to buy flare wrenchs, and
it worked for me ever since. Use an adjustable wrench. You heard it,
an adjustable wrench. Use one that has nice straight and tight jaws.
Slide the wrench on the fitting until it is contacting the root of the
adjustable wrench jaws. The tip of the jaws will flex away. With one
hand holding the wrench, tighten the adjustment screw on the wrench
until it is tight, but don't turn the wrench yet. Wiggle the wrench
back and forth while contiuing to tighten the screw until you feel it
the jaws cannot come in on the fitting anymore. Be patient, and keep
wiggling the wrench and tightening the screw. The wrench will almost
feel like it has become one with the fitting. Oh yeah, spray some
graphite lube on the fitting beforehand. Liquid Wrench never worked for
me. When the wrench is very tight, turn and loosen the fitting. I
never used a flare wrench before, so I don't know how easy it is. But
using an adjustable wrench, I had been able to loosen even some rounded
 fittings off of a Volvo.

Well, I put in the seat bushing, as was suggested. And it didn't work.
However, I did notice a thing or two after I installed it. If your
shifting is a little sloppy, then get this bushing replaced. I opened up
the shifter and found a bunch of junk that LOOKED like grease, but was
actually pieces of rubber that had been shorn off (like Jim had mentioned).
Like I said, in my case it still pops out of gears, but the rest of the
tranny shifts a helluva lot smoother. I highly recommend you go and spend
the $20 on the bushing and the little know at the end of the shifter to
 make it feel better!
It was shifting so smoothly that I actually drag raced a little "Rice-boy"
up a hill in Oceanside (north of San Diego, for those of you that don't
know). I think I pulled him in third gear on the hill. Funny that I did
that with stock 4.10 and 31's with only a K&N and a Downey header... If it
wasn't for the K&N, I wouldn't have been able to hear my own engine!
(sorry, that was my reference to the "Rice-Boy" page post earlier).
Anyway, back to the point. Looks like I'm going to have to take the tranny
into a shop and have them check it out (unless there's another solution out
there?) Roger Brown sent that e-mail telling me about his "horror story"
with the repair, so I know what to look out for now.
 Thanks!

 I didn't go but I read a report that I rec'd I think from a club member. I
looked but I must have deleted it already. Here is what I remember from the
posting. Anyone feel free to correct any errors.
The state had started an environmental impact study several years ago. The
study was put on hold when the state was negotiating with another land owner
regarding an additional purchase. The thinking was that a study could be
done on both pieces of land at the same time. Well the state and the land
owner never did come to terms. This had been going on for some time. It
sounds like now it is back to square one where another study is needed.
This can take a few more years yet.
Several clubs were present including Espirit de 4. Some neighbors were also
present. One of the subjects was establishing "buffer" zones to reduce
noise and such near adjacent private land. It seems owners were not against
the project since most already live near the existing park. It's the
environmentalist who is against the project. Until the new study is
completed, everything will be on hold.

From: "ChrisS" Subject: Poly bushings install
I finally got around to installing poly bushings on my truck's leaf springs
last weekend and want to share a few random thoughts.
Back when I bought Downey's heavy duty shackles and Energy Suspension poly
bushings to match, I gave up on the bushings. The old rubber ones were more
than a little stubborn. So at the time I turned to this list and got some good
suggestions, as usual. I guess enough time passed by for my subconscious to
work the problem out and I dug in the other day. I ended up utilizing the "cold
chisel as wedge in the spring eye" trick mainly because I didn't want to take
my chances with a torch, hole saw or drill bit.
You know, after you get your truck up on stands, and tires, etc. out of the
way, the routine gets, well, routine after a while. Most of the work involved
is in your head, isn't it? So I disconnected the shackles and made a feeble
attempt at a long bolt coupled with a big socket to press the bushing out - no
go. I didn't have a lot of confidence in that scheme anyhow, and didn't hear
one word of support to boot.
Here's what I did. I ended up driving a cold chisel in the spring eye, at a
right angle to the spring itself. Perpendicular to the truck. Then I took a BFH
and another cold chisel, this one was pretty long, and simply drove the bushing
out. The bushing is an inner steel sleeve surrounded by a rubber bushing, which
is again surrounded by a large steel sleeve. The whole apparatus must is
pressed into the eye. I was able to drive the chisel on the outer sleeve,
hitting around and around until it evenually came out. What helped halfway
through is changing the wedge to the other (inside) side of the spring. I
didn't find a lot of rust. That outer sleeve is just a tight fit in the eye. At
times I used a large socket as a drift as well.
The bushings came with a little pack of silicone grease, which I used to lube
every plastic-to-metal contact. I wish I had some of this when I did my FJ-40
years ago. Those bushings squeaked right away and for the longest time I
suspected the Monroe gas shocks - I realize now that wasn't the case. On
re-tightening I got the nuts/bolts just tight. I didn't want to pinch the
brackets by over-torqueing. Anyhow the Downey kit provides some nice grade 8
bolts and the nuts have nylon inserts so I'll just check on 'em once in a
while. Those shackles gotta swing, you know.
One little surprise was on the passenger side - the fuel tank is right where
you want to use your socket for the front spring eye. This is where a 19mm
box/open end wrench comes in handy. Also, here's an afterthought: Getting the
front spring eye lined up with the bracket front-to-rear (not up-and-down) was
a real pain. Next time I do this job I plan to leave the rear shackle
disconnected until I connect the front spring eye. For one spring I ended up
using the bottle jack between the shackle and bumper to push the spring
assembly forward enough to get the front bolt in.
Sure am glad I decided to get physical with it. Now the ride is noticably
improved, and the rear is much more snug to go with the sway bar bushings I
installed a couple weekends ago. Nice!
Many thanks to all the listers who provided input. It sure is great to be able
 consult with similar minds.

Hi All, Does anyone know what amperage the alternator in a 90 4runner v6
puts out? Also does Toyota offer any other higher output alternators? How
is the quality of alternators from places that require you to trade in your
old one for an after market style one? There is lots of questions here I
know but any info is appreciated.

So I'm thinking of putting 32x11.5x15 tires on my 1990 4Runner. Most of
the "tables" show that it will fit no problem without a lift (I have
the 1.5 inch longer Downey Coil springs in the rear). I've also heard
from many people that it WILL rub when bottoming out hard. If I lift
another 1.5 inches in back and 1.0 inches in front (torsion bars) will I
 over come any rubbing problems?

From: i043866 Subject: Blown rear brake cylinder
Well, I'm about to repair my second item on my new 1984 4Runner (1st was
alternator). I blew a rear brake cylinder. Took off the wheel and drum
and there is brake fluid everywhere. I just put new brake shoes in it
3 weeks ago. A friend told me that it is very common to blow a brake
cylinder shortly after you replace the brake shoes. What's the deal?
 Is this true?
So here's what I figure I need to do:
 1. Clean brake fluid off of everything
 2. Replace brake cylinder
 3. Replace brake shoes
 4. Resurface drum
 5. Bleed brakes
 6. ???
Any tips or advice from those that have had this problem? Anybody
wanna buy a 1984 4Runner with a new alternator and soon to be new
brakes? I have had to replace more stuff on this 1984 4Runner in 2
months due to "break downs" than on my 1990 in over 3 years. I guess
it's all part of the learning experience. I'd rather spend my time and
 money on modifications than fixes.

Another possibility is that, if we're talking about the newer Gen. Corollas,
 they have
a new trim line designated as the "VE" model...But what I've noticed is that
 from
afar...the "VE" can REALLY, and I MEAN REALLY look like a "V6"!
Hmmmm, a Toyota marketing stratagy.....perhaps...but it could also just be a
 coincidence.
I do agree though with the rebadging craze....and it too gets to me
 sometimes.

With 32x11.5's on stock sr5 wheels with 4.5" backspacing, there will be
minor fender and sway bar rubbing. On my aftermarket set of wheels and
tires, 4" backspacing and 32x12.5's, there is only minor fender
rubbing. There's no rubbing in the rear with either set. I have low
profile bumpstops and Sway Away torsion bars up front. In the rear are
Downey coils. Basically have to pound in the front fender seam just a
 little.

Well, a little has changed since I was on the list this Fall. I was
considering purchasing a new Tacoma, but have decided to buy my dad's T-100
 instead. It is a 1998 Toyota T-100 SR5 4wd, Extended Cab, 3.4 Liter,
Automatic. It has every factory option except for ABS. Toyota accessories
installed by the dealer include black running boards, bug deflector,
bedliner, and tonneau cover, as well as the Toyota single disc CD player
unit below the stereo. It is flame red with grey cloth interior. Truck is
mint and has under 4,000 miles on it.

Well definately #1 & 2 need to be done - since you said that the brake
shoes were just done weeks? ago #3 only if they became soaked with brake
fluid - otherwise if they're a bit wet, brake cleaner will clean tehm
right up. Also #4 shouldn't need to be done - simply clean the drum real
good with brake cleaner.> Anybody> wanna buy a 1984 4Runner with a new alternator and soon to be new> brakes?

They've got 'em, and

(the locking rear diff is great). I'm going to be ordering the TRD supercharger
