Setting up diffs isn't hard if you have the right tools.
Here's the basics:
Depth micrometer
bearing separator
12 ton shop press
dial indicator
torque wrench
If you don't have these you'll have a tough time.
David, setting gears by pattern is an acceptable way,but you really need
to know what you're looking at,and how to correct a bad pattern.I have
never had a problem setting diffs up by measuring pinion depth and
backlash.
When i first started out i used to do everything by feel, and at first i
never even bothered to check the patterns.I knew i was going to blow
them up before they ever wore out.Over the years i've purchased all the
proper tools, and believe me its a lot easier now. There really aren't any
shortcuts......

While we're talking about clutch jobs, 2 questions come to mind:
1. We (well, actually DAVE) broke 2 bolts on Sunday, one was a small one
that held the front tranny seal inside the bell housing, and the other was
one of the 8 hardened flywheel bolts. On both occasions, we were careful to
set the torque wrenches to the factory manual spec, and we were just waiting
for the "click" of the wrench when we got the dreaded "pink!" of a snapped
bolt instead. This happened with 2 different wrenches, so it's not likely
that they BOTH were out of calibration. Both bolts had to be replaced before
we could continue the job. The smaller one we replaced by stealing a
non-critical bolt from another location, but the flywheel bolt was tougher.
So, what would you do? It's Sunday night, no dealers are open, and you gotta
have the truck for Monday morning. Choices are to leave the bolt out, or to
replace it with a non-hardened bolt from the stock at the local hardware
store (which is what we did). Did we do the right thing?
2. When refilling the transfer case and tranny, can you just pour the lube
oil in the holes in the top where the shifters go?

Hey Leo-
Hope you went out and bought those guys a six-pack for that. I had a VW
GTI before I bought my Toy. Coming down from Tahoe one winter I got
stuck in Colfax. Alternator died. No VW place in town so they took it to
the local garage. Garage ordered the part for me. I was strapped for
cash (working for Northstar as a lift-op) so I asked if they'd let me
use their tools to install it. They said sure. So while waiting for the
part to arrive from Sac I went to the corner liquor store and bought
them a 12-pack of Bud. They sure appreciated it and I appreciated the
tools.

I think you will be OK. The only problem might be if you put the
flywheel out of balance by using a different weight bolt. I doubt this
is an issue. One of the issues you have to watch out for is if the bolt
can take the force at high RPMs. I one used non hardened bolts on the
drive shaft and they seemed to do ok.>> 2. When refilling the transfer case and tranny, can you just pour the lube> oil in the holes in the top where the shifters go?> I have done this without problems.

Hey - when you gotta have the truck you've gotta have the truck - I would
heve done the exact same thing... I think next time I do my tranny I'll
be getting a set of flywheel bolts from either ARP or toyota.> 2. When refilling the transfer case and tranny, can you just pour the lube> oil in the holes in the top where the shifters go?

I seriously doubt it. This is a huge shop area that is part of the Ag Mech
department here at UNH. They teach classes in Engine Rebuilding &
Maintenance, Woodworking, Welding, Metals & Machinery, Electricity, and Home
Construction. We have 7 fully equipped hooded welding booths, TIG, MIG, gas
torches, even a new plasma torch setup. Need to swap an engine? Got a 3 ton
chain hoist in the ceiling. We can also grind valves, and have 2 parts
washing tanks. Oh yeah, huge air compressor with lots of chucks.
Total shop area is about 3,700 sq ft, excluding loft storage (accessible by
electric lift).
I think you have me beat on the Liquid Nails thing though...

Well these bolts are located close to the center, so the amount of
imbalance introduced is real slight, and probably within manufacturing
tolerances.

Yes, I wasn't too concerned about the dynamic balance, I mostly wasn't sure
if a cheap bolt would eventually fatigue and break, and then there'd be REAL

Be sure to test this stuff on a place that doesn't matter, some of these
harsh chemical products can attack paint and make a worse mess.

Most parts stores have the little pumps that screw on to the top of the gear
lube container for a few bucks. I usually install the tranny and then pump
the fluid with the pump (although it tires out the arms). It makes the
tranny/xcase a little lighter and easier to install.

My problem is I work at the network level and not the regional level. A
regional network such as Fox Sports West is more likely to pick up a new

Subject: 4-Runner rear window motor..
Hello listmembers, I would like to say thanks to all the good feedback
on intercooler installation and turbo pressure on my 2L-T first! It's
going to be done when the weather permits. Now it's about -14 celsius
outside.
Well, to my question - my rear window has been getting slower and
slower to close during the last 5-6 months or so. Now I have to "help"
it get all the way up. Without help it stops about 10-15
centimeters/4-6 inches from fully "closed". I searched through the
archives of the list, and found that this is not so uncommon. I first
tried to clean and relube the regulator, (man, this was full of rust
and old gunk!), but that did not help at all.
So i called the local Toyotadealer and asked how much $$ a new motor
would be.
Sit down when You read this - - 2100,-NKr.--/ US $ 280- !!!
Man, I almost dropped the phone!! This is outrageous !!
No way I will pay that! There has to be another way...
Has anyone tried to rebuild this motor? Or is there a motor from
another car that I could use? Maybe from the rear window of a Chevy
Malibu or something?
Any ideas will be appreciated !
Morten.

Perhaps a bit more expensive, but it's a commercial product that should
work if the others won't. I read about it in a magazine article that was about
prepping the bed before applying a spray in liner.

From: Park Owens Subject: 1999 Black Hills Cruiser Classic
I received a call this afternoon from a fellow who had heard that the
Black Hills Cruiser Classic is open to Cruisers only. This is not true.
The Black Hills Cruiser Classic is a sanctioned event by the Toyota Land
Cruiser Association and welcomes all Cruisers, 4-Runners, and Toyota
Pickups. The Classic uses Cruiser in its name just because it is catchy
and sounds good.
Rest assured that any and all Toyota Land Cruiser Association members
are welcome at the Classic.
The trails are designed with all TLCA members in mind whether we drive
4-Runners, Pickups or Cruisers.
We hope a lot of you are able to join us in July for the greatest TLCA
four wheel drive event in the central northern United States.
If you have any questions, please drop me a note.
Cheers,
Park

From: "Young, Jody" Subject: 95 Four Runner Books and other info
I just picked up a 95 Four Runner for a very good
deal. The only problem is that it has no owners manuals at all. Does
anyone have a set laying around?
Also, I would like to know if anyone knows the guy
who used to own it. The truck is green and had a black brush guard on the
front and the small brush guards on the tail lights. It has moonroof, cd,
etc. It had California plates on it (my roommate is a wholesaler and bought
it from a Toyota auction in Dallas). I think the guy was from the Los
Angeles area and that his name was Shane Wilder. I say this because of a
business card that was left in it.
The reason I would like to find out is to inquire
about any service done to the vehicle. A friend pulled the VIN info up at
the dealership and nothing shows up there, but I can tell that the drivers
front fender has some paint work and the bracket holding the drivers light
is broken.
If anyone knows this vehicle or guy, please email me
directly.
Last thing---mileage.
My 94 Xtracab gets about 18 mpg average per tank
with 32's on it with a 22RE. This thing gets 13 - 13.5 average per tank
(mostly city). I read some back issues and this seems about the norm or
close to it. I put in a K&N filter and a Flowmaster muffler after about 4
tanks of gas and it has maybe given me about 1 mpg better (and it's still
quiet but sounds deeper).
When I drove the vehicle from Dallas to my house
(about 280 miles), it got exactly 17 mpg doing 75 which is not that bad at
all. I think I'll try some better plug wires next just to see.
Thanks
Jody
