Square stock is nowhere near as strong as round tube - I won;t go into
the physics behind the sq/round tubing , but try this -
take a piece of paper - roll it into a tube, set it 'up' on a
table then push a weight on the end - it should hold, now take the same
paper and fold it into a square - crushed right away... also the old can
trick - you should be able to stand on an aluminum can, then tap in one
side and it'll crush.
I'd use square tubing for reinforecemnts of parts, but if you're REALLY
wanting rollover protection then round is the way to go.

Well, I don't think it's exactly the same, but a guy here at work has just
sold his '91 4Runner and he has a complete set of manuals for sale. He
asked me if I want them, so if somebody wants a set of '91 manuals let me

Well, *normally* for someone doing a stock rebuild piston replacement is a
matter of bore size - if you're getting the engine bored oversize to
correctany defects in the engine block (excessive scoring, wear,
out-of-round, etc.), then you need new pistons. Otherwise, take a fine
wire brush to the TOP of the piston and clen the carbon off, check for
cracks (around the ring lands especially if there's been detonation) and
also for wear along the 'skirt' of the piston. I recently re-ringed my
225K mile motor, and only honed the cylinders and re-ringed the engine,
using the factory pistons that cleaned up real well. If you're replacing
the pistions I'd spend the little extra and get some nice high compression
units from J&E or weisco.

OOPS - forgot to say that this was for the 'roundish' paxton type SC's and

I then turn it off and try to restart, and it will take> several> minutes to get going. It doesn't seem to matter whether the engine is hot> or cold.> This sounds to me like a fuel delivery problem. I would put a fuel
pressure gauge on and see what happens. I've had this happen 3 times with
different vehicles. All four times it was a different problem, so I'll list
them all real quick here:
1) Fuel pump was going bad. The fuel pressure on an EFI is pretty
important. If the pressure is too low, the engine won't run right. Check
this with a fuel pressure gauge.
2) Fuel pump relay was going bad. The relay would occasionally not
work. This shuts off the fuel pump and the engine dies. Then several
minutes later, the relay would start working again.
3) Coil wasn't grounded well. I had coil that appeared to be
grounded. The engine would warm up a little and the strap that held the
coil would expand due to heat and not hold the coil securely. This would
result in poor ground and the engine would die.
Since you took it to the dealer and they checked out the ignition
system, I would probably check the fuel delivery/pressure. Hope this helps
and good luck. Those intermittent problems can sure be frustrating!

I agree with the others that a "super glue" would work well for
getting everything together where it's visible, but I would use another glue
for areas that can't be seen or perhaps for re-enforcement behind the parts
of the grill. JB Weld is the strongest epoxy I've ever used. It takes
overnight to set and has a gray color, but if you can hold the broken pieces
together for 24 hours, it'll never come apart again. I've used this stuff
on metal, plastic and glass and it's worked great. I had a broken tail
light trim piece that was plastic with chrome covering. I used super glue
to attach the pieces and then re-enforced the back with a paperclip with JB
weld over it. Kind of like concrete with a re-bar. It never came apart.
I'm not affiliated with JB Weld or anything. I have just found it to be one
of the best epoxy glues around.

I just have a question about my 1990 toyota pickup. I have a 22RE engine
in it. I noticed the other day that my check engine light was on. I
checked into my haynes manual to see if it could be anything serious. It
said that I could do a self diagnoses on it if I would attach a continuity
tester across the T and E terminals that are close to the Ignition coil.
Then depending on the blinking patern of my tester I would know what the
problem was. the problem is that I don't know were the T and E terminals
are. I might be mistaken the terminal numbers; however, I can look that
up again in my manual. But if anyone knows anything about the check
engine light or the terminals I explained could you let me know.

Just thought I'd throw out another option. I recently bought a new
chrome replacement grill for my 85 4Runner and the price was $28.
That included all of the little mounting clips too. I think the
black/non-chrome grills were $25. MUCH cheaper than the $135
quoted to me at the Toyota parts counter!...but then the $28 grill
isn't a genuine Toyota part :)
The company is The Levan Group Inc.

I am in no way affiliated with the Levan Group, but I have been very

Well, I did my brakes a last weekend and eveything seemed ok except the way the pads seem to wear.
Maybe it is normal but if you people have some advice I would appreciate it.
First let me say I bought the rebuild kit of the calipers, but it was VERY cold the weekend I did it so tired not to get too far ahead of myself.
The boots around the pistons looked ok but I am going to replace them when the weather gets a little warmer.
Now my question, on the right side of the vehicle the inner pad was almost wore right out, yet the outer one showed little wear. The drivers side was similar but not as extreme. Now does this mean the outer pistons are not working properly? Or is it simply a matter that the inner ones get the brake pressure first and it takes alot of pressure to bridge over to the outer pistons.
Any assistance is appreciated.

Subject: Buggy Springs
James I have a question for you (or anyone on the list)....
While looking around the web for details on 'buggy springs' I found a
site that recommends against using them on the rear
(http://www.mountainoffroad.com/catalog/buggy/buggy.htm). Im confused as
to why they make this claim. The rotation direction of the axle and
mounting point of the shackle (at the rear of the leaf) is the same as
the front. So what makes the rear axle different?
If the rear axle is subject to spring wrap due to buggy springs, what's
the best way to control it without affecting travel and articulation? Im
sure some form of an axle to frame connection would be needed.
Help a student of suspension to see the light.

From: "Lance Morin" Subject: Inside the cab cage - round or rect. tubing?
I've got a buddy who has one of those inside the cab cages. They do fit snug and add extra support, but they also have factory disclaimers against roll over type protection. As long as one still has a hard top they are a good idea. I would pad it very well though. The loss of head room is less than desirable. I cannot tell you how many times we've smacked our heads on that cage!
We just installed an external cage around the cab of this same guys '82 truck. So he now has his factory hard top, inside the cab cage, and external cage extending from his custom rock bars at the frame. It's a nice rig and looks quite different now. As one would expect, it's not something he totes around on the street in.
I've got an '81 that we also put a cage in, but my truck previously had the cab whacked off. My cage fits up under the windshield snug, then extends just above where the factory cab would be. This way, I don't have to worry about banging my head. My back hoop is in the bed to allow for more room and it's got legs coming off it just past the wheel wells.
Our cages were fabbed from 1-1/2 ID round tubing. We originally planned on 2" ID but the 1-1/2 steel was of higher quality and in better shape (IE : no rust). We each bought 4 sticks at $20.00 per 21 foot stick. Then rented a bender for the weekend ($70.00). He had a welding machine and everything else we needed, so we went at it. Two days later, two cages 95 percent done... some cleaning up, finally mounting and coating are all that is left to be done.
I've worked with both round a square tubing and it's easier to form round tubing to a defined shape. However, I've seen a few rect. tubing cages that were pretty nice. The key factors are the grade of material and the wall thickness. When calling around for steel check on the grade and carbon content if using carbon steel or pipe. If using a D.O.M. type tubing you'll already be good.

OK let me start my saying I don't recomend them at all for road going
rides. To put it simply the risks in a failure at highway speeds are too
great in that if any part of the buggy leaf fails you have a great
chance of killing yourself. With that said thay are a solution in rock
crawling where a failure will only result in a broken part not a
multiple rollover at speed. Getting back to your question the front and
back axles do function in the same way when the shackles are on the same
ends of the springs as in the Toy pickups. Allthough the front axle has
aditional side loads due to the steering. I suspect that they (RMOF)
were not recomemding them on the rear and on the front with a rear
shackle only in an attempt to get around the road going problems.
However if this is a correct assesment I still would not do it myself.
If you want to go this direction in a search for more travel look at
double shackles (missing links). These will give near to the same
aditional travel without the risks and can be pinned to function as
stock on the roads. I run Doubles (missing link) on TT2 and have also
replaced the fixed eye mount with another shackle (with accompaning
links to stop the shackles collapsing) with great sucess. After somthing
like 200,000Km no failures in the OZ Mountains and Outback.

That was I had heard from others. In my case however I called up and my VIN
is not in the computer as having the problem - ie no head gasket fix under
warrantee. Anyone else heard that they were selective about this? This is a

However, my toy has a newer engine ('91 w/ 53k) that does need its gasket
replaced, but since I dont own that particular vehicle they wont cover it.
:(
Ideas? What are the symptoms of a bad head gasket?
Currently my engine overheats right away, the needle behaves erratically,
and when I got home there was a bubbling sound of steam bubbling through the
coolant overflow reservoir. There was coolant in the radiator when I checked
after it had cooled down. Needless to say the rig is grounded at home until
I can figure something out. I'm thinking bad water pump or something to do

I have a smittybuilt cage in my 85 fourunner. It's costly but it fits
nice and forms well to inside. The tubing is heavy duty. You lose some
room and your sun visors are limited to what they can do.
I flipped my truck once on its side. It was
a gentle roll with little damage. The cage may not have come into play
but I felt safe while it rolled. This was worth the cost to me. The cage
is also handy to tie down carge and crazy friends.

Could a bad EGR system do this? Could it be the injectors after
230,000 miles. I tried injector cleaner. No Change.
I noticed that when it wants to die I sometimes hear the door on

With the 4Cyl you can load about 2000lbs and be ok. Flat Towing that
FJ40 should not be a problem for the Tacoma at all. I would recommend
putting the FJ40 on a Trailer though to avoid damage to it.

I took to my local toyota shop and was told the contacts were the
problem so $140.00 later and at home the same thing.

If you already paid the dealer to fix the problem then they should fix
it. A local dealer tried this kind of "guessing" on a problem with my
Mom's Camry. After she paid out about $500 she called and asked if I
would talk to them. Being nice but firm I pointed out the fact that
Toyota Techs are ASE certified as the freely advertise, and should be
able to diagnose and fix a problem on a vehicle they are trained on the
first time. After nicely pointing out this problem to the Service
Manager the problem was corrected with no further charge to my Mom.
My advise is to take that Taco back down to the dealer and show them it
still has the same problem and insist they fix it and don't pay another
penny.

Might be the fuel pump is weak.
It's not producing enough pressure for sudden acceleration but ok for cruising.
Heavily clogged injectors would not clean with an injector cleaner.
After 230,000 miles it is a good idea to clean and rebalance the injector.

A guy at work was looking for one a while back to replace his rusted one.
He checked out the local dealer here and (are you sitting down) it's
$900 new. He said his buddy who is a body man could get one for around
$700. Don't know if its just the shell or the whole thing.

I've had a set of these bulbs in my '91 since just after I bought it (9/91).
I got mine from NWOR, so I don't know if they're the same brand or not. In
any case, I've had zero problems with them.
I mentioned this site in a previous message. The direct order price is way
too high. The same bulbs from the same manufacturer are available at my
local Pep Boys for $7.00 each.

Would appreciate if someone can help regarding excessive vibration of the
line. Had the vehicle about 1 month, just recently had the fluids all
changed and didn't really notice it before. Reading some of the earlier
post, it looks like some of you changed to a synthetic oil and I'm
wondering if that would help. I can't really tell if its coming out of the
rear end or the drive line. Previous owner updated the springs, no rear sag
and it's a bit lifted. 31 X 10.5 X 15 tires. I can greatly reduce the
vibrations bit I have to really baby it off the line.
Please help if you can.
Thanks

Look at your rear drive line and check for any dents or deep scratches.
Even a little will cause vibration -- usually at higher speed though.
Are there any noises along with the vibration? How fast are you going when
it happens?

I received this via e-mail. I have no association with this company, never

always seem to be a lot of people looking for deals on CB radios.

If the admins prefer that I not forward this kind of info in the future,
