Go to your local dealer and ask if they sell a kit make by Bryco. These
cost around $100 and have all the needed parts for replacing the timing
chain. Much cheaper than the OEM parts, but good quality nonetheless.

I've got a pair in my hand right now. They're pretty substantial, I'd
say about 1/8" thick steel with rubber vulcanized to the chain contact
surfaces. I'll be putting them in today/tonight, so I can't say on the fit
yet, but they look good so far. They sure as heck won't be breaking, I can
say that for sure! I'll keep you posted, maybe take a few photos for my
website before I put 'em in.

It won't. An alternator is designed to put out a constant 12 volts for the
vehicle's 12 volt electrical system (actually turns out to be about 13
volts, but not much more). The Toyota's alternator is rated at about 60 amps
I believe, and should be sufficient unless you run a large amount power
hungry accessories (stereo amp, lots of lights etc.)
Here is how I usually remember electrical terms (compared to standard
 plumbing).
 Volt = water pressure
Amp = flow (gallons per minute)
 Wire gauge (diameter of pipe)

I bought the ones from NWOR mainly because the flange plate that bolts to
the head is 1/2" and Downy's (at the time) was only 3/8" and there is no
need for a gasket with the NWOR headers (although I added one anyway). The
pricing was about the same, don't bother to get the "chrome" ones because
after a few miles they "blue" out anyways. Just my $0.02 worth.

I don't think so. There are some modifications that have to be made to the
axle housing. Not sure how difficult it is though.

 First, thanks for your efforts...
OK Let me this straight! I have a 94 22re xtracab with stock 4.10s.
 Can I put
 41110-3D090 4.55 (RZN)
In my truck for $695 ??? + $37 for factory switch (which I assume
will fit in one of my unused dash switch holes)
This is a complete, compatible, brand new, electric locking
thirdmember with gears from Toyota ???!!!???
I just have to slide axles out, pull third member, replace
with new and button back up (then change front gears as well of
course)? Or, is there some machining/adapting required?
This does almost sound to good to be true!
I was thinking 4.88 truetrac thirdmembers next fall, but,
if this is true the brand new toy electirc locker would
be cheaper! Hard to believe, but if true, I'd probably have
to get out my credit card (I was going to wait till I had
the cash in the bank - I don't like borrowing for toys).
Bud I'm not commiting yet, but, certainly is tempting!
I currently run 31"swampers, but might go to 32" when
they wear out - hence a little waffling between 4.56 and 4.88
gears... I think I'd prefer 4.88s but 4.56's would be OK
 as well I think.

From: "Roy Arblaster" Subject: Re: 22RE timing
 Mark & Laura,
The timing should be 5 deg BTDC with your check connector pins T and E1
shorted. Are you down on power? Is your acceleration sluggish? It could
be that you are off a tooth on the timing chain or off a tooth on the
distributer install. The manual for an '88 22RE states the following:
 - - Turn the crankshaft pulley until the timing mark is aligned with the 0
 deg TDC (22R) and 5 deg BTDC (22RE - 22R-TE) mark
 - - Temporarily install the roor
 - - Begin isertion of the distributor with the rotor pointing upward and
the distributor mounting hole approximately at center position of the bolt
 hole.
 - - When fully installed the rotor will rotate to the position shown (OH
 WELL)
 - - ALIGN THE ROTOR TOOTH WITH THE SIGNAL GENERATOR PICK-UP COIL
 PROJECTION.
 - - Install and torque the bolt.
There is a small (excuse the term) tit on the signal generator (pick-up
coil) and one on the rotor that need to line up. When you are right the
rotor should be pointing somewhere around 10:00 O'Clock.

 Subject: engine-tranny clunk ??
I bought my '86 4Runner a few months ago, and it had several problems and
needed some work, so I got it for a bargain. I did an engine rebuild, so
that is running great now. But there are still a few smaller problems
left. One of them is a "clunk" that occurs in the lower rpm range for
a given gear (it's a stick) when I let off the gas to coast down. Then
if I step on the gas again, I get another clunk. As best I can tell, it seems
like there is some play in there somewhere, so when I take my foot off
the gas and transistion from having the crank actively accelerating the
tranny to where the engine is slowing down and the tranny starts holding
up the rpms, I get a clunk. Doesn't happen if I hold out the clutch
and slow down, so it's definitely a tranny-back thing. Anybody else
experienced this and/or know what the cause might be? Is it easy to fix?
 Thanks in advance...

It appears so. Brand new, already geared. $695 is assuming we get 10
people ordering the diff. You do have to modify the bolt locations on the
housing. Use a new gasket to modify it or pay someone. Should be very
 simple to do.

Well I go into the outback for two reasons Pleasure and Business.
Business trips are aimed at doing vehicle testing usually on production
4wd's. When we test race trucks the trips are a little different in the
speed and terrain is different.>My wife's idea is to rent a 4WD/Motorhome and travel across the>country.
I suppose it depends on where you Land in OZ. I have not done the
Trans-continental Trip for a while (Sydney To Perth) That will take
about 2 weeks. However I think the best places to go are up the Top End
like the Kimberley. That's a few thousand Km north of Perth. The drive
up from Perth will take a few days. The trip from the Kimberley to Alice
Springs (Ayres Rock) via the Tamami desert and Wolf Creek Crater is
great too. You will need 2 weeks to do that one too.>What I want to know is how many days your organised trips are, where>we are going to (locations) and best of all, how much $$$.
Well mine are a bit ad-hock but usually around 4-8 weeks. But remember
I'm testing vehicles so we are trying to trash them. I gather by your
question you are thinking I do Tag-a-long tours. There are lots of those
operators in Oz most tours take 2 weeks and cost about 2000 Oz on top of
vehicle hire, but they do include everything else. As far as going with
me I wont want any money just purchase your share of Booze and food.>I don't know if there are more listers interested to join us
The more the better. You can get some great deals on LC troopies when
you are after a few of them. Otherwise if I'm not doing a trip for
business I have a few truck's LC pickups and wagons, Hilux pickups in
dual cabs that can be used.

 Howdy all...
We had a snowstorm here in the Northern VA area and it took me 2 hours
 to get to work.
Not that I had any trouble in the snow, but I wound up pulling a Ford
Mustang, Mazda Miata, Toyota Tercel, BMW,.. a JEEP WRANGLER and a nice
little Ford Exploder up a couple of hills!
The best part was the Exploder,.. The rednecks in it were pissed about
the Mustang I was pulling,.. about how he shouldn't be in the snow...
about 1 mile later... on a nice little uphill,.. ran into the
Exploder.... he couldn't make it up!
As with all others.. I of course do not charge for the pulls... hey,..
i'm just building up some good karma... but I must admit... I wish I
had had a camera with me so I could have someone take pictures of me
pulling the Exploder and the Jeep up the hills!
 A Personal note:
While I know peolpe are against Brand-Bashing.. I have personally
owned a couple of Jeeps... so I think I can talk... CJ style (to
include TJ, XJ whatever-J) jeeps SUCK in the snow... they are just too
light.. and most people don't want to put 400-500 lbs of sandbags in

Sorry if this offends the sensibilities of certain people but,.. I can

 2 questions
1 - what is the easiest way to solve the difference in bolt patters in the
pre 84 to post 84 drivelines to third member mountings. I'd rather not pull
the plate unless that is the easiest way..
2 - what is the difference in length between the ebrake cables between the
drums so I can make something to extend them.
 thanks

What an awesome day in HH....warm enough leave the jacket in the truck,
and clear skies. (Sorry all you guys going through that nightmare in
 other parts of the country).
We played around in (what I call) the sand pit awhile, then hooked up
with Kevin Carey and Bruce. We were already talking about running Tank
Trap, so we headed to the obstacle course to get a look at it. As soon
as we got the obstacle course Kevin jumped right into the Mini Rubicon,
 and breezed right through.
We walked Tank Trap, and it was gnarly as ever. After the hike we
grabbed a frosty beverage out of the cooler and stood around debating on
whether we'd give it a go today. This is when we hooked up with Eric
Stegall. We were very much considering jumping in, when we got word
that Bruce had found a wrecked Jeep and could not find the owners, so we
all ran off in search of this person who had just rolled their Jeep to
help. Turns out we while we were searching for the owners, they
 returned to the Jeep.
Turns out they had rolled it the night before, though with all the
fluids still dripping from it, it looked like it had just been rolled.
Amazingly enough the driver didn't get a scratch. He had leaned back
under the roll bar, and reached up and braced himself under it. The
Jeep rolled over and stopped when the front axle (left tire) caught a
tree on the way down. Weird site. You don't see CJs in trees everday.
We spent A LOT OF TIME helping them out. Bruce used his Warn X9000i to
help free the CJ from the tree. The owner was the nicest guy, and was
really not upset about rolling the Jeep. He was thankful to be alive,
and realized the Jeep was a hunk of steel that could be replaced.
AFter that we had a good ol' time running trails that us 'regulars' the
park had never even been on before. You get stuck in such a rut of
taking the same paths to the next big obstacle, since you know you won't
get lost. It was nice to see a new part of the park. Tim's parents,
and Rey Nicolas both followed all the other locked vehicles, in the
4Runners with open diffs. I was TRULY impressed. Nice driving.
We then climbed the nasty section of Fremontia going up to Hector
Heights. It was MUCH MUCH worse than when we ran that trail 6 weeks ago
on the Day After Turkey Day Run. Even with two lockers there was hardly
any traction to be found. The loose rock gets under your tires and you
just sit there and spin. Myself, Jack Geiger, Kevin Carey, and Bruce
all completed that section. Though I would say anyone did it with ease.
After getting to the top, it was already nearing sunset, but I still
hadn't given the Mini Rubicon a go, so we all headed for the rocks. We
got there and I jumped right in. Kevin was nice enough to spot me
through it. I crawled right through it. Gave the drivers side nerf one
BIG WHACK as I was finishing, but other than that it was a smooth run.
The low end torque from Downey headers REALLY helped out...I wish I had
 done headers sooner!
Jack Geiger couldn't resist giving it a go before we left, so he jumped
in. Piece of cake. He gave his bumper one nice whack soon after
entering...and then just crawled right through. Next Bruce had to give
it a go. AFTER ALL, the guys with 33s made it through fine, and he had
35s on his rig. :-) He went right through, and Kevin came through
again also (in record time I might add :-) That was the end to our
day...from there we got our In & Out Burgers and headed home.

 G'Day All
Some of you will be aware that I have been looking into installing a locker
into the front of my IFS 4Runner but I also wanted and needed to retain ADD
"shift on the fly". The only current semi locker units available for the
IFS 7.5" are the ez, truetrac and lockright but they do not allow the use of
the full ADD "shift on the fly" feature. However, my research indicates it
 is not impossible to achieve.
Part of my research also included discussions with ARB on the use of various
parts to assist in this excercise.
However, consequent to several discussions I had with ARB on the lack of an
"open" locker for the IFS Toyota and the benefits that this would provide to
wheelers and to many other 4wd users that encountered situations in many
instances where a locker would be of great benefit, I received a phone call
from ARB and I believe this news will be welcomed by many.
"Mr ARB" has now decided he will make it a lot easier and ARB will produce
an air locker for the Toyota 7.5" IFS.
Is that great news or what !!!!!!
However, due to current research and development committments it will not be
possible to commence R&D on this until at least 5-6months, but all going
well we could see a front air locker for our IFS Trucks and Runners by years
end or a little later depending on the complexities. There is a difficulty
in overcoming the air supply via the needle row bearing for the ADD but I am
sure this will be overcome by ARB. I have some ideas on this and will
discuss with ARB as well as be possibly providing an IFS front assembly for
 R@D purposes.
I believe many of you will see the benefits of having a "open" centre gears
in the front of your IFS trucks with the ability to engage or disengage a
full locker as required and would hope that you will ultimately support ARB
in their decision to development such a unit. It will give you many options
that were not previously available. You will be able to keep full ADD and
shift on the fly as per normal, but have the added benefit of a full locker
being available at the push of a button as is required. Manual hubs could
 still be used.
Start saving your dollars. I for one can't wait.
 I will keep you posted.

Had the same condition in my 22RE. The thermo was stuck open. Replacing
restored the "midway below half" normal temp needle position, with a slight
rise and fall as it closes and opens.
Incidentally, you can test yours without the hassle of removing the neck if
you have a mechanic's stethoscope and a little patience. Start up and place
the listening wire on the neck. When the engine gets nice and warm, you'll
hear the thermo snap open. If you never hear it snap open, open her up
and have a look. Hope this helps...

Subject: Re: Subject: Plat plugs (was: New 4Runner)
Another reason not to use "platinum" plugs... they are a big rip-off IMHO.
First, the electrode is NOT platinum. It's a copper electrode with a tiny
little disc of platinum attached (glued?) on. This has been the case for
all "platinum" plugs I have seen/used. There may be exceptions, but I
doubt it. To make matters worse, this cheesy little disc tends to detach
from the plug after 20-30k miles. 100K mile plug? I doubt it! When this
disc comes off, it widens the gap a nice .01" or so. Nice, eh? You are
paying the extra $$ for a tiny sliver of metal that gets blown out your
exhaust valve a couple miles down the road. BTW, all my experience with
these plugs comes from F-Body cars (Camaro, Firebird, etc.) Could be
that other applications of "platinum" plugs work just fine. I'd like to hear
about it if so. I'd be amazed... :) When I bought my Camaro, it had AC
Delco platinums in there. 3 of the 8 discs were missing at 15K. I switched
to Bosch platinums. After another 10K, 5 of 8 discs were missing. I remind
you again how these plus are SUPPOSED to be 100K mile plugs.
