I put new 4.88 gears in my 90 4Runner. 5 times they (rear) have been removed and reshimmed/seated until the noise is at a minimum. They still have a whine at 50-60 mph and when slowing down there is some noise, not grinding but more like a whine. Will this
decrease in time, or is it common to have more interior noise when going to these lower gears? These are motive gears, if I decide to get another gear for the rear can ya'll suggest where would be a good source for Richmond gears or which gear to get?
Toyota does not make a 4.88 for the 90 model, or so a dealer told me.
Would anybody that has put the 4.88s in their 4runner relate if they too have an increase in noise, etc. and any details? Feel free to email me.
Thanks;

Well, I would say one of two things:
1. You got a bad set of gears
2. Whoever set them up did not do it right.
If it was the gears, the installer should have realized that they could not be
set up within spec. I would guess that your installer did not do it right. I
had a set of 4.88's from Motive put in the rear of mine last time around and
they don't make a sound.
It sounds like they set a poor coast pattern, but I reallly am no expert on
gear setup.

Ok, I am starting to get really jealous of you guys in California and out
west with all your wheeling trips. I know there are some guys from
Western PA on the list. If you would e-mail me and tell me where your
from, where you like to wheel and what kind of wheeling you do, My
brother in law and I would love to get together sometimes. I am in
Butler, PA (30 miles north of Pittsburgh). I don't do much wheeling as
locally all we have is trails that my bro-in-law can go on in his stock 2
wheel drive. (I won't say the make, but I try to talk him into a Toy
4x4) My truck is also almost stock with IFS. The trails I ride on, I
don't need 4wd. So if you are from West PA, e-mail me, I'd love to meet
some Toyota fanatics in person.

From: "Scotti, Chris L." Subject: Rolled My Truck! (Long)
Well the inevitable finally happened. It just happened in a way I never
expected. After all the wild places I have taken my truck and the off
camber situations I have been in, I rolled my '95 4Runner on a freakin' dirt
road!!!
I was near Taylor, TX on my way home from Austin to College Station last
night with my friends, Antonio & Suzanne, and we were taking the dirt
backroads (Following my GPS). I wasn't even driving, I was in the pasenger
seat and my friend was driving. She took a corner a little fast and it
started to fishtail. Her instinctive reaction was to slam on the breaks and
turn AWAY from the skid! This forced us to do a 180 and launched us into a
diagonal roll backwards sending the front end into the air and smahing down
onto the passenger side roof (right over my head). The truck actually
continued to roll all the way back onto its tires facing almost the same
direction we started in!!! My friends and I are bruised up but fine. I
bumped my head where the roof caved in and went to the hospital and got some
x-rays. Nothing but a bump and bruise. What I can't believe is the
(relatively) minimal amount of damage that I did to my truck (and to my
head). Like I said the roof is pretty munched, especially in the drivers
side rear where we started the roll and the passnger side front. The
windsheild was cracked up but you can still see through the drivers side.
Both rear side windows are gone. The rear window is perfect but has trouble
rolling up in the bent rails. The passenger side is fairly munched but the
doors open and close (both windows are gone & the mirror). The drivers side
is almost pristine, the drivers side back door window is cracked up but the
drivers' is fine. The mirror is even still on! The spare flew around in
the back and smashed one of my Subwoofer boxes and my arb compressor(I think
the solenoid is leaking). The lightbar is gone off the top, the roof rack
is crushed and we got mud in 1 tire bead.
What makes this so ridiculous is that we drove the truck home 1.5 hours and
all we had to was stop once to change the leaking tire. We did not even call
the police or a tow truck. The truck drives fine, apparently no mechanical
problems and it is even in alignment!!!! In fact we are think about
dressing up as car crash victims tonight and going to a couple costume
partys with my truck as part of the costume!!! On a more serious note, I
went ahead and called my insurance thismorning but I believes Suzannes' will
cover it since she was driving. Well, following my tradition I will
probably not make all the reccommended repairs that the adjuster says and I
already have a few mods in mind (such as a convertible top). Regardless, my
truck will be out of commission for quite a while. This accident could have
been so much worse and I thank God that none of us is seriously injured.
I will be sure to get some pics up on the web for all to see as soon as I
can.
Happy Haloween!

From: "Scotti, Chris L." Subject: Fixing and Modifying on my munched 4Runner
Well since I will be putting my truck in the shop for a while starting on
monday I thought I would try and get some input on how to handle a few
planned mods and things. (See my earlier post for damage description.
Insurance: I already reported to my insurance but I was not driving. I
honestly hope hers covers it so I can get a rental car. I dont want to
screw her over though as she is a friend.
Roof: This is a big one. I think it will be cheaper just to chop the roof
at this point. I have always wanted a convertible 4runner (ala pre-1990
4Runners). I would like to put on a soft top but I want a good snap on
waterproof one. I obviously will have to get a roll cage too. This is 4
door so it will be a little different. I also would like to preserve my
rear power window (maybe it could slide into the rear piece of the roll
cage).
Rear Bumper: I want a small one (maybe chrome) that maximizes departure
angle.
Compressor: My ARB air compressor was ruined. I want to get a more powerful
one and mout it where the spare used to be carried. I dont want it to be
ruined by mud though.
Paint: I want to put some kind of smooth bedliner type stuff on the outside
of the truck in lieu of paint. Durabak is good and they have a close color
but it is lumpy. I heard there is a smooth rubber sealant out there that
almost looks like paint and bonds to itself for easy repairs.
Alternator: This does not relate to the wreck but my truck really needs an
HO alternator. My lights and stereo suck my Optima battery dry. Power
Welders are great but expensive. Any other Ideas?
I also either will need another roof rack (attaches to rollcage through soft
top) or a good bumper spare carrier.
I certainly appriciate any advice you could give!
Thanks,
Chris Scotti

Pretty much everyone carries Warn products. Look through your catalogs to
learn the difference between the products and get a little info. Then you
could probably go to your local auto parts store and buy them or look in the

Hey Hollis --
I tried cranking my Tbars way up (about .5 inch to the bump stop) after I
installed my Rancho arms. I found that I got more clearance under the front
end, but I didn't get much wheel travel. The Tbars made the front end so
stiff, it couldn't flex on the rocks. I kept pulling tires everytime I went
over the rocks or anything else. After resetting the Tbars to a more
moderate lift, I got a way better ride and my truck flexes as good as it's
going to get for IFS. I'm able to fit 34's with just a little rubbing when
I'm all twisted up. I was able to fit 32x11.50 BFG Mudders too. With a
different offset, I'd probably be able to fit 33's -- with NO body lift.
I'll probably go to a one inch body lift at some point so I can mount my new
rocksliders to the frame easier. I'd also like to clear 35's... which
might be a trick, but I'll see what I can do.

Just to let you know Chris, I had a similar thing happen to me. What my
(and her) insurance companies said is that because I was in the vehicle and
gave her permission to drive, it is just like I was driving myself. So my

Do a body lift it's cheep. If you can't afford $100 for a body lift then
you should not be wheeling or putting 33" tires of your truck.

First up remove the OEM draglink and steering arm. Using a press remove
the stock ball. Go out and purchase a straight draglink from another
truck which has replaceable ends, like the LC40-78. Purchase a set of
draglink ends. The kit will come with a couple of bolt on balls. Most of
the balls are a taper fit so you will need to either drill out the taper
on the steering arm slightly or machine the taper on the ball. Bolt on
the ball using the supplied castle nut and install the split pin.
Reinstall the steering arm. As the ball is now flipped the stock
draglink will not fit, because one end is 180deg out. Take the draglink
you purchased and remove both draglink ends. One end will have a
clockwise thread the other anti-clockwise. Centre the steering arm and
pitman arm. Now measure the distance between the balls. Cut down the
draglink to the measured length, assuming that that ends are screwed in
half way. Remember to cut the end that has the clockwise thread.
Clockwise taps are heaps cheaper so it makes sense to cut that end down.
Tap the draglink for the correct thread and assemble the ends into the
draglink. Install the draglink and tighten the clamps. Now you need to
relocate the Torque arm up 3.5in to compensate for the change in the
ball centre. You can do this a few ways. This simplest is to get the
Superlift bracket and bolt it on. Otherwise you can weld on a plate on
either side of the axle mount to relocate the bracket up. The easy way
to align the plates before you weld is to leave the torque arm in place
and bolt it up to the plates as if they have been welded in. Now align
the plates on the axle an tack them on. Remove the torque arm and weld
them in, then reinstall the torque arm. Now take the truck for a run up
the street, if the steering is out loosen the clamps and turn the
draglink to adjust the steering centre, then tighten the clamps. Repeat
this bit till the steering is centred.>Is it as safe/strong after modification as stock?
Well it a hell of a lot safer than heating the steering arm up. The
1st/2nd gen steering arms are prone to braking under stress due to age
anyway, it makes no sense to weaken them by heating them up. Regardless
of how slow you let it cool the arm will be weaker. It just depends on
how much weaker due to the heat, rate of bending, type of bending and
cooling rates. The new draglink is heaps stronger than the OEM unit.
Also as it is a straight unit is not prone to bending. Overall stronger
than stock with better alignment, of course a crossover is better but
that's another issue.

From: Tony Bartlett Subject: tranny problems
Well, I removed and disassembled my tranny yesterday. Looks like I got
lucky that I made it back the 750 miles from South Dakota.
Found the input shaft bearing missing about 5 balls from it. Everything
else was looking good. It looked like all I would have to do is replace
the bearings, all of them because of all the metal that was in the oil.
Also was lucky because there were some big chunks of leftover bearings
and the cage that holds them in place.
But, someone noticed a couple of chipped teeth that I had missed. The
bad thing is these teeth were on the countershaft, the most expensive
part of most trannys.
So, now my options are finding a countershaft and rebuilding what I
have, find a used tranny or try and fit this NV4500 I have. Right now I
will see how much I can find a countershaft for, find out how much it
will cost for the bearing kit and compare that to a used tranny and to
the adapters needed for the NV4500 install. Also, there will be much
needed modifications to the tranny tunnel to fit the NV4500 (very big
tranny).
Just thought I would let everybody know my findings.

Just got back from vacation and saw this thread and had to respond. When I
went to the Toy List Rubicon run, I had a non-list member make a comment
after seeing my truck as to how many bypasses I would be taking. "Not a
one" is the standard answer for me. Yes, I drive an IFS, wheel it hard, and
(knock on wood) haven't broken a hard part yet. I do gather some body
damage on occasion which is more me than anything else. A lot has to do
with the setup. That's one of the primary reason for my skinny tires, they
slip before things break. So, if you want to go to a straight axle, do so.
If you want to run IFS, do so. Just look at the whole vehicle package.

Install a new input shaft bearing and see how long the counter gear
lasts. Could last quite a while, but this would depend on the amount of
damage. Fairly small chips shouldn't be too bad.

I think Chris just meant that anyone in general should not be wheeling if
they don't have $100 bucks to spare. I'd have to agree with him. He didn't
mean that you have to have already made your first million like me. Don't I
wish. : )
What's the offset of your wheels, Hollis? Do you have 8 or 10" rims? I'm
guessing that with a more negative offset wheel, you won't rub much at all.
Keep in mind that I'm running about 2.5" lift, no body lift, and 34x9.50's
without rubbing except when I'm all twisted up.
Oh, you're running low profile bump stops... that would cause some rubbing.
I went back to the stock stops since I don't need any more upward travel. I
tuck my tires as far as they'll go. I just need 6 more feet of downward
travel!!!

Yep that's what I ment. If $100 is a major thing to you than it's going to
be real painfull when a ring and pinion lets go.

From: "shaun" Subject: Basic 4x4 Theory
This one will probably sound like questions on an essay contest! I
dont completely understand a few basic 4x4 theories well enough to
explain them to a non wheeler. So, thought I'd ask the experts out
there...
1. What are the differences between "All Wheel Drive" and " Full
Time 4WD". Is the FJ-80 really Full Time 4WD?
2. From what I understand, because of the differential mechanism
inside of the transfer case on an All Wheel Drive vehicle, if any one
wheel on the vehicle looses traction and spins out, then the vehicle
is stuck. Is this true?
3. Does a Full Time 4WD vehicle ALSO have this sort of differential
mechanism inside of its transfer case? If so what makes it possible
to get some torque/power to both axles?
4. Does a Part Time 4WD system such as the one on my 88 4Runner have
any mechanical means of allowing the front and rear axles to spin at
different speeds or is this the reason why you should only use the
4WD when the wheels can slip?
5. My Dad's FJ-80 has lockers on each axle and on the center. Would
this behave the same as a locker on each end of my 4Runner? Why is
it that the owner's manual on the FJ-80 states that the vehicle, when
completely locked up, should not go over 5 -7 mph when other lockers
can be used even for high speed mud bogging? What's the difference
here?
Like I wrote, sounds like the making of an essay contest, but I
think there is a lot of confusion out there about these concepts
cause every time I ask one of my four wheelin friends, they don't
seem to fully know the answers. Thanks.

While driving on rough tracks over the weekend, I noticed a clear "rattle"

It appears to be worse with front hubs engaged, but travelling in 2WD,
between those places needing 4WD.
The vehicle is a '95 V6 4runner with standard front end setup.
Any experiences from other owners would be greatly appreciated.

Well my 4.5" Superlift has been a SUPER pain in the ass to install. I'd
hoped my buddy and I could do it all (front and rear prings) in a full day.
I don't know what I was smoking. The front is done except for getting the
torque rod back in......the eyes are about 1/2" too short to bolt up at both
ends (which I was told would not be a problem.) I'm gonna try putting the
front tires against a curb and give some slight pressure (gas pedal) while
my friend slips the bolt in....hopefully. Removing the rear springs,
especially the pass. side, took All day today. We ended up literally
beating it off after torching and prying. And a word to the
wise......there's no hope in re-using the factory shackles. I have to order
new ones tomorrow. :-(
Man this thing is gonna be tall though........
