This question is mainly directed to the mailing list member in Australia.
Finer Filter has been producing a polyurethane foam air filter for decades.
I have heard many good things about this filter on extreme dusty condition.
What is your real experience with this kind of filter. I know the condition in Australian highway is extremely dusty. How do they perform in desert condition and how well they retain water / preventing water to enter the engine?
I understand they use 2 stage filtering and only the outer foam would need to be cleaned under normal condition.
 Are they claims true?
This product is not available in US but my friend Is going to visit Sydney and I would like to order one from them if they are really good.
 Thank you,
 Agustinus Gunawan

What about getting the part number off the relay, going to an
electronics store and ordering the Relay directly form the
manufacturer, instead of as a Toyota "kit"?
Most manufacturers use off the shelf, readily available relays.

 Subject: K&N debate
Not to be rude, or step on toes, but why is a debate on K&N's not to be
discussed? In a flame war maybe, but why can't K&N's be talked about? I know
it is important for the list admin(s) to stop things that go too far, but I
haven't seen anything out of line, or rude, or generally not relating to
Toyota 4x4's. I see no reason to step in in any way - yet. I seem to
remember MANY topics getting way off lien - & this has not gotten any where
 near that.
Hey, maybe it has been a year since some info was posted, but the list is a
different animal now. If you were to only discuss things one time and then
ban it from the list, we would have about SQUAT to talk about! Half the stuff
on here has been covered about 2 MILLION TIMES, but who cares?
I have answered several questions several times myself, I don't care. I have
asked several questions multiple times too, and people have answered as many
 times.
I personally see no reason to kill a debate because someone says they are
tired of it. I personally think sucking sand into the engine is pretty
important to discuss, and maybe the discussion could help someone out.

I tried that. I went so far as to call the relay manufacturer. I was also
told that this part may be a relay that they only supply to Toyota. (I seem
to recall that the part number wasn't a valid U.S. part number and therefore
was either a Japanese part number or one made for a specific customer.
Okay, this may have been bull but the point was that they weren't going to
tell me where I could buy one.) I did, however, get them to fax me a pinout
diagram for a relay that seemed to have the right specs, but by the time I'd
gotten them to do that I'd already built and installed my own relay pack.
And since it all works now, I wasn't about to open up the panels again.
(You know, if it works, don't mess with it.)
If someone wants a copy of the specs, I'll see if I can find them.

From: "Rick" Subject: East Coast Club update
I have made some progress on the East Coast Club. I don't think that
becoming a TLCA Chapter will be any problem at all. The necessary paperwork
should be on the to way me soon. I have the requisite number of vehicles
and members my immediate family alone! Yes, we are long-term Toy fans.
There have been prospective interests from as far away from my locale as NY
 and FL. All are welcome.
I have not detected the slightest resistance to a mini-directed chapter.
Quite the opposite. Using the internet to hold meetings should also help us
out a good bit. (one prospective member has already suggested a national
mini club, but TLCA handles all that extremely well, and we should all stick
 together anyway)
I have secured a website and will begin to post to it as soon as I figure
 out how.
I will probably be unable to attend Allen D's GWNF trail ride, (yes, even on
both dates, I have my daughter's gymnastics meets to attend also) which
would be a great way to start, but would appreciate if any list members
would disseminate the idea of a regional club. This club will hopefully be
holding its' meetings on the 'net, and holding official trailrides hosted by
 members at local sites.
BTW, anybody on the list, even if you are not from the East Coast, who is
interested in trying to add mini content to Toyota Trails, please let me
know. I'll make sure it gets to the right place.

I was wondering if 31" tires would fit on my stock '84 4x4 x-cab SR5. it has
some 235-75-15 on it(I think, I cant remember, it is something like that)
Will there be any rubbing with these tires, I am looking at
31-10.50 on 15" rims. The rims are also stock, and there is no lift.
I just got the truck no too long ago, and it has 4 different brands of tires
on it. I am not driving it that much, because the tires are almost bald and
I am waiting for some cash to come my way. by the way, I am looking at all
 terrain tires, nothing too aggressive.

Hey Scott, you posted this message a while back (see below), and I was
wondering if you could expound on this point. The only IFS breakage I have
seen occured at the point you are talking about. Could you not have a
stronger one made? As long as the CV stays in the same position to keep
steering/movement problems at a minimum, I would think this would solve the
 breaking of the stub shaft.

From: Luke P Miller Subject: Re: Broken Antenna
Removing the fender liner is easy. Just get a large phillips head
screwdriver or a 10 mm socket and undo the bolts holding the plastic liner
in. This will give you access to the bottom end of the antenna. Takes a
few minutes, and goes quicker over the years as you strip the plastic nuts
and can't put all the bolts back in :)
As for removing the antenna, most of them generally have a decorative
chrome trim piece at the base of the antenna, right on top of the fender.
This will likely have four slots in it. You can get a special tool that
fits in these slots and unscrew the piece, or since you antenna's shot,
just use whatever tool is handy to get it off. This may differ for the
power antenna, such as I had on my truck, but these little details tend to
escape the mind over time. Just start unbolting stuff until what you're
after comes out. Always works for me!

something last year I call the "Day After Turkey Day Run." So many
people were gonna be in the Bay Area last Thanksgiving that we decided
to get together and head to Hollister. Everyone had such a good time
that we decided to try and make it an annual event.
I haven't done any footwork for the event yet. I'll talk to the staff
at Hollister in the next couple days, and MAKE SURE they're going to be
open Friday, November 27. I'm not really interested in trying for this
year...but if next year people are still interested in attending, maybe
we can have some T-shirts printed or something. :-)
If you'd like to see last year's trail report, its at

 I was just thinking....a pre-run of the trails wouldn't be a bad
idea...so we know what condition they're in, and hopefully head off any
 surprises.
If anyone is interested in a pre-run on Saturday, Nov 21 let me know

I'll probably jump in with ya. The one time I went to Hollister since I
got my 33s, gears, and front locker, we just didn't have enough time for
 me to attempt.
And BTW....I want to be locked up A-N-D have travel. :-)

From: "james stevenson" Subject: RE: Extended shocks
Karl Bellve Wrote>...gas pressurised shocks will extend to their maximum length. Either
your aux or your main shock will extend to its maximum length when the
 truck is just sitting still.
Yes, the two aux shocks will do this. First up I?m not a fan of the
traditional gas type shock which extends on its own. That said what you
describe is not a problem. If you assume the main shock has the same
valving as the two aux shocks, quick sharp ocellations will cause a
reaction in the main unit. The aux will come into play when extended
travel is needed. IE when the main reaches full extension or
compression. If you have gas pressurised aux shocks they will remain
fully extended till the main shock is full extended. This will then pull
the aux units down allowing additional extension. This is of course
double valved slowing the suspension at the farthest reach of extension.
If the suspension the starts to compress it will be taken up the by the
main shock, although a small amount will be taken by the aux units. If
the suspension goes rapidly to full compression it will use the main
shock till it reaches full compression, then the aux units will move up
to full extension (double valving slowing the suspension). Hope this
explains the operation of the unit. I will go into more detail if anyone
needs that.>Do you actually use this setup?
Yes, I have done this a number of times. I currently run this setup on
TT2, have also put it on a number of production race trucks. This setup
gets around the rules which stop you relocating the shock towers higher
up. Also with this system you do not have to fabricate new shock mounts.
Applied to a Toy truck you can get a longer shock in than the RS9012
without the shock extending through into the engine bay or fabricating
 mounts.

Not personally, but I got to see several in-progress points on a square
body one that was bobbed locally this past spring. They used a pickup tail
gate with it, to eliminate how low the stock 4Runner tailgate hangs, and a
soft top (window in the top now) and had an awning and tent place do the
 shortening on the top.
The plan for it calls for shortening the stock top through the rear window
area, and changing the windows to match, since that would be the easiest
place to cut it.>> Any suggestions?> I would guess that you could probably sell the hardtop for enough to pay
for a soft top, and unless you live in the city, I think that's the way
 to go.

From: "shaun" Subject: More TPS Stuff
All this TPS stuff I've been going through makes me reminisce about
my old carbs and how easy they were to work on. Anyways, I read in
some of the back issues that the IDL circuit seems to be what goes
out first especially on the V6's. This is the circuit that I can't
seem to get continuity on. Yet, the truck runs great (except for the
barely noticeable hesitation right at 1000rpms). I called Yota, they
want $120 for a new one but I also found a used one for $45 although
I cant verify how many miles are on that one. Can anyone offer
any advice on what to do here. What actually happens if the TPS
goes completely kaput??? Can I limp the truck home and then go
cough up that 120 for a new one or will i be totally stranded. Any
comments at all would be appreciated. Scott, thanks for all of your
 help so far.

I've had an intermittent problem with the console rocker switch that
operates my '94 4Runner's rear glass. Every now and again, it won't work.
Must be a loose connection or tricky relay. However, the key switch in
the rear door has never failed to raise/lower the glass.
This electric glass is one thing I don't like; I'd much rather have a lift
glass & drop door, or lift glass & lift door, or ambulance doors. I once
made the mistake of lowering the glass with wet sand stuck to it, and got a
few vertical scratches on the glass where the sand was raked by the
 weatherstrip. Live and Learn.

 | |
The actual CV joint is just the grapefruit-sized thing on the bottom. I
realize that it's a relatively common break (kinda like Birfields; the
construction is almost the same) to break the six-fingered thing inside the
CV. But at normal angles, this won't commonly break. It can, but it
 usually doesn't.
Beef up the CV itself? Sure; WCOR makes a setup to use some kind of buggy
joint intead of Toyota joints. I don't know if it's a Type II or a 930, but
look again at what I pointed out as the weak point. It's not the CV itself,
but the stub where it goes through the spindle.
Beef up the stub? Well, you'll need a bigger hole through the spindle, or
better material to make the stub out of. IMHO, better material is a losing
battle; it'll cost a fortune, and you won't gain much, if anything. Bigger
hole through the spindle, and a bigger stub? Well, you'll need new hubs,
wheel bearings, steering spindle, brakes, etc.... and those aren't exactly
 easy to come by.
At high angles, the CV joint itself will be the weak link. But under a lot
of power, the stub will usually break first. Either way, you replace both
by changing the CV joint, since Toyota made them one piece. But even if
you separate them into a stub and a CV, and put a massive CV joint on it,
you really can't increase the strength of the stub significantly for a fair
 price.
This is why, when I did my IFS 9", I didn't really worry about the fact
that my halfshafts are 28-spline (Ford 9") on one end, and 27-spline (D30)
on the other, because that stub in the spindle is cheap, stock, and weaker
than either of those two, at a 26-spline (about 1") shaft size. I knew that
it would break stock CV's (and stubs, now that we're all thinking of them as
two separate parts, right? :) ) before breaking my expensive custom half
 shafts.
Where is the solution? I don't know. I wish I did; I could make a fortune
on it. I imagine that it's possible to make a bigger wheel bearing snout,
hub assembly, and all that, to work with a bigger stub, but I don't have
the resources to do it. I suspect that it could be set up to work in small
steps, too, so that it could use either a 930 (or better yet, a 934) CV, a
31- or 33-spline stub (and halfshaft) and take all the power you can dish
out, even at full angle, but I can't even imagine the cost of making it into
reality. Probably several thousand apiece for the first two, and I'd guess
that it'd have to sell at about a grand each on production units (per side)
to be a reasonable business venture.
Maybe I ought to pick up an extra spindle or two, and see what I can do....
I'll bet with the right machining, a circletrack 9" floater end could be
used on a Toyota spindle, maybe with new brake rotors, but the same calipers
to keep it easier to repair, and some 1T truck wheel bearings.... :)
This is starting to sound like a lot of one-off race fabrication. But I
have a funny feeling that this is where the better lift kits originate. :)
