Everyday the first start of my truck is a little difficult. When I turn
the ignition it will turn over then die and will do this maybe 5 or 6
times then finally it will start, sluggishly. It seems like it isn't
getting fuel because it will start great the rest of the day. Any
suggestions, by the way it is an 86 with a 22RE.

From: Steve Keene Subject: Clutch wont release! "The solution"
I wrote a week ago that my clutch suddenly
 would not release completely.
What I found was that the Centrerforce I
 clutch disintegrated. The clutch material
on the Pressure plate side broke up and fell
off jamming the pieces between the pressure
plate and the clutch disk. This disk was
about 3 years old. It certainly didn't last
as long as the original toyota clutch. I'm
 disappointed.
I replaced it with a Downey super clutch. I
cant say it feels as tight as the
Centerforce did. It feels more like the
original Toyota unit. Lighter pedal feel and
more slippage as it goes in but I've only
driven it 20 miles so far.
Well that's the story, anyone else have an
 opinion on the Downey Clutch?

I have had the same problem on 3 different 22R and 22RE engines. What
I found was that the O-ring seal on the oil pump was what was leaking.
The oil pump is directly behind the crankshaft pulley. You may need
to use a pulley puller to remove the pulley. I live in the Phoenix
area and things tend to dry out. It was not that hard to change the
oil pump seal. One thing that helped me was to take the time to
remove the radiator to allow more room to work it is kind of cramped
down there. The 22RE that had the leak was also a '90 model. One
bolt stripped during installation. So becareful not to overtighten.
Another thing to mention, I had to buy a complete gasket set just to
get the one O-ring gasket that I needed.

What is involved on changing the front main seal on a 90 22RE? Mine is
leaking & I want it to stop. I tried telling it nicely, then I yelled at it,
but neither worked. Should I try to bribe it before I tear it apart?

Mine was the same way. Apparently these bolts tend to do this, so be certain its the oil pump and not the crank seal> Another thing to mention, I had to buy a complete gasket set just to> get the one O-ring gasket that I needed.
Jim Brink would know for sure, but I am fairly certain I purchased just the crank seal and the oil pump o-ring and didn't buy any gaskets, but this was about a year ago, so I don't remember exactly.

I was able to buy the same thing. Crank Seal and oil pump o-ring. Cost
$12. Funny thing about this is I lived near Brown's Toyota at the time
and I called them for a price before I drove down there. They told me
~$12 over the phone. When I got there, they said $42. I explained to
them about the wholesale discount and they said, "oops" and I paid $12
for it. Several customers at the parts desk were just amazed ;-)

Just to let you know that most states have laws that require your

True (to some extent) but they *do* have a "SecureBuy" ordering site where you
can do the SSL bit. You sign up and register your payment options and then
place orders. Looks like a nice system, I've signed up but not ordered
 anything yet.
Note, we are quite happy to put our cridit card number on a piece of paper,
stick it in a public mail box and have the postal service carry it across the
country to have someone else read it and then who knows what! What is more
problematic is for some vendor's (on-line or not) computer system to be
invaded and the credit card info in it be stolen.

How difficult is putting a new 20R in an '80 pick-up? It doesn't seem like
it would be hard at all. I have been checking around and the cheapest I've
found is $700...just to put it in. It seems like it's the easiest thing in
the world...just take the carb off this one and put it on that one...etc.
Why so much? Is there a cheaper place near Colorado Springs? The guy that
has the engine says he'll warrantee the engine if a reputable person puts it
 in.

Having done a couple of engine swaps I would estimate 8-10 hours for your
first time, and about 6 once you get better at it. This assumes that
you're cleaning things up along the way, doing little maintenance things
while the engine is out, etc. If you're going for raw speed, then 2
people could probably do it in about 2.5-3 hrs for a long-block in an '80.
What you might try to do is simply pull the manifold (intake &
exhaust) bolts, pull the manifolds away from the engine, pull off the a/c
compressor & wire it to the fender, unplug the alternator, and then remove
the trans-bolts, and the motor mount bolts, pull the engine, swap the
accessories/brackets, then put 'er back in - that's about the only way to
do it while doing minimal work.

Subject: Re: IFS lifts and rear springs
 1) I seem to remember some negative feedback on the Procomp IFS lift
kit recently. Could you provide more information as to the problems
 you were having.
 2) What are some experiences with using just the Rancho upper A-arms?
What are the advantages of it vs. just the regular Toyota One? Does it
 provide more downward travel?
 3) Does anyone have experience with using the Rancho upper arms with
WCOR's Axle kits (the $699 kit not the 14" long tavel $1699 kit)? How
does it work for you? How is it different than the Downey Slip Yoke
and long travel ball joints? It seems to be more expensive than
getting the Downey kit but you get less parts.
 4) I am considering buying the 4" rear coils from Procomp instead of
using the 1 1/2" Downey coils with the 1 1/2" spacer. This seems like
it would provide greater overall travel than the Downey kit. Does it
create more interference problems than the Downey kit due to the
greater travel (i.e. cutting the gas tank skid plate etc.)? Would you
have problems with the driveshaft not being able to handle the extra
travel when you have the swaybars disconnected?
I know it's a lot but any input on these would be appreciated.
 John.

It should be fairly ease to tell if it's Gear oil. Gear oil smells like a
cross between sewage, and road kill.^)
As a general rule oil tends to leak downwards and back from the source of
the leak. What components/seals are forward and up from where you see the
oil? Rear Engine seal, Head Gasket, Rocker Cover Gasket, Rocker Cover rear
 'half moon'.
On the 22RE it's pretty hard to see the back of the Rocker Cover, but you
should be able to get your hand back there and check for leakinf oil. If
the leak is as bad as it sounds than I would expect the clutch to be
slipping, or at least to be burning the oil somewhat IF it was coming from
 the rear seal.

Buying a new seal of course (about $10? from Toyota). Draining and removing
the rad (for access). removing the fan belts, removing the pulley with a
bolt on puller (not one that grabs from the outside edge), removing the old
seal with a seal puller/claw hammer/screwdriver (care should be taken not to
nick the crankshaft). Installing the new seal using some kind of race to
drive it in (a large socket, even the old seal works in a pinch). Tap it
into place keeping it straight, (don't bang the f&*( out of it) and make
sure not to damage the spring on the inside.

I would suggest the skyjacker lifts as one of the better "non-custom"
lifts. They have 3" and 5" lifts and some people have modified the
5" lifts to get 3.5" with a nice soft spring rate.

After many emails, and going back and forth through old
clutch messages from the list, I ended up with an OEM heavy
duty one from Toyota. With the discount from TLCA, it was only
$150 for the whole thing, including seals, which is not bad.
I had a PepBoys clutch with lifetime warranty, but after looking
at the Mickey mouse stuff they put in there, I decided to stay
away from life time warranty stuff on something so time consuming
as a clutch. I wanted something reliable for the trials, the
PepBoys one used to smell burnt a lot.
I went back and forth about getting the CenterForce, what
turned me off were the discussions going on in the list.
Nobody seemed to agree that it was worth the extra money and
the messages about a stiffer clutch pedal did not appeal to me.
The heavy duty clutch from Toyota is stiffer than what I had
before, which I do not like. Even though I resurfaced the
flywheel, the truck still shakes a little bit. I was told that
it'll go away after using it for a while.
I put all the messages into a big text file for removing the
transmission, anybody interested can email me for it. I also
send it to Barney to put in his web page which for me is a
 great source of reference.

As the control arm moves, it creates a torque on the torsion bar. The
torsion bar resists the movement and acts like a spring (anyone else taking
 mechanical vibrations?). Check
http://www.off-road.com/4x4web/toyota/tech/torsion/ for details on how to
 adjust them.

Guys, It's killing me just to say this, but last night, as I was driving
across a barren stretch of highway, coming back into Colorado Springs, I
started to hear a knock. Well, at the time, there was only one thing to do,
keep driving. When I got her home, sure enough, there was oil in her. I
think I've spun a bearing. This is my daily driver, and I need this truck.
It's an '80 4x4, with a 20R. What are my quickest and cheapest remedies?
It seems that 22r's are more plentiful...is this a viable swap? Is it
difficult or time consuming? Should I just rebuild the 20R? What's a good
price to rebuild it (I have no way of rebuilding it myself)? What's a good
price for a 22R/20R in good working condition? Help!
 Steve S.
 **********************************
If it is in fact a bearing, it's pretty easy to pull the oil pan and
replace it. It would be a real "stop gap" measure, but it would get it
running again! You'll need a torque wrench. I can give you more details if
neccesary. I would recommend putting in a 22R that's rebuilt or in good
condition with a new timing chain. A rough guess on price would be
$300-$600 for a good condition running 22R, plus approx $200 for the timing
chain kit. I'd guess a rebuilt 22R could be about $1500+.
How many miles does your 20R have?

You can get alcans for less than that, $150 each and as custom as you want.
I know you said not alcans but it is in the range. Otherwise downer or
 Trailmaster
Trailmasters warranty is the best, I have had 3, yes 3, new sets of springs
shipped to me now questions asked. In case you are wondering why 3 -
I bent the first pair in a head on, the second sagged till the shackle hit
the frame, and the last one broke on the Rubicon, under circamstances that
it probably should have broke, especially since it was about 5 years old and

Nice product but that is extremely expensive for us in US to order from them.
 $1600 bed + $ 430 Tailgate + $500 shipping = $2530 Canadian
 $2530 X 0.65 = $ 1655 US
my local dealer could get me the original for $1200 delivered.
I think there are one company in Rhode Island offering for around $900
But I lost the link to their homepage.
Anybody have their address and phone no?

 David,
As someone else wrote. You need to pull the radiator, fan belts,
and main pully. Then pull off the oil pump and then check the seals
(replace anyway). When I had to do this on my old truck, the oil pump
seals had visible cracks. When I put it all back together, the leak
stopped. It all took a few hours to do and that was with cleaning parts.
It is a fairly easy job. Good luck.

I just got a 1996 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 SR5 V6 today. The truck is great, with
lots of power and goodies. The only problem is that it seems to take three
or four cranks of the motor before it starts up (no matter if hot or cold).
The cranking sounds fine (not like the battery is bad - I think). Any ideas
what might cause this? Once started it idles and runs great. I ask,
because my old 92' Toyota with the 22RE started up everytime instantly with
 me barely turning the key.
 Any ideas?

David, should be very easy, remove your drive belts, remove the bolt for
 your crank pulley.
Now, carefully, use a couple of screwdrivers and pry out the seal. I
think when I did mine I removed the oil pump.
On a 85 22RE the torque for the Crankshaft pulley bolt is 116 ft/lb.
I also had to do it twice and install a speedy sleeve because of wear on
 the crank.

I like mine. It stands up to the abuse better than the Centerforce I
did. Don't get me wrong, the CF was a great (90k miles worth) clutch. I
just think the Super Clutch is specifically designed for Toyota
applications and the CF uses general technology for all vehicles.
The SC engages closer to the floor than the CF did. Takes some getting
used to. Just my opinion, but what do I know? ;-)
