We had a great trip... 3 Toy pickups, one Sami, and one J**P. We camped at
Wentworth Friday night and started on the trail Saturday around 7:30am. The
trail was lots of fun since I just put my 34" Super Swampers back on and a
Lockright in the front. It's amazing what my truck will do now. I picked
the hardest lines I could find and still walked over almost everything. I
couldn't get up soup bowl though. I kept getting high centered and we had
some traffic coming. Li'l Sluice was a snap... I'll have to try it in the
dark next time. One of the Toys almost rolled going downthe slabs. He hit
his brakes a little hard coming off a slab and then killed the engine. My
buddy was hanging on the rear corner of the bed to keep it on its wheels.
We camped at Buck on Saturday night. On Sunday, there were a bunch of
Toyotas leaving the Rubithon. We were even stopped just below the turn on
Big Sluice to wait while Jim Job welded up a '91 pickup with a broken
steering arm and outer CV. We stopped at the Springs to swim and eat lunch
before heading up the hill. I can't wait to go back.
On Sunday, a small group might be going up to Fordyce for a day trip. If
anyone's interested, send me a note.

How was it? My trips have all been late, 3 trips leaving after dark and 3
trips through the little sluice in the dark.. You do the sluice? In the
 dark?
It is a whole different beast that way..

This has happened to me twice lately, both on HOT TEXAS days. I'm motoring
along and it seems like the air is getting hotter. I fiddle with the ac
on/off buttons, fresh and recirculate, sure enough it is getting hot. Then
seconds later it's like I'm just using the vent. After the truck (85 22re)
was turned off and sat a few minutes, the ac blew cold again. System was
recently charged and I'm hearing the compressor come on and off.......also
it was idling high, like 1500. First time was off road, second (today)
traffic. Is there a short or bad switch? Where do I start??

I've been searching for a "new" truck for over 2 months now and I
finally found one. It's a black 1994 Xtra Cab SR5 V6 5 speed. It has
all the options--CD, power package, "sport" package, sunroof, etc. It
drives a lot nicer than my '87. I'm not crazy about caring for a black
truck, but I couldn't pass it up because it has been meticulously cared
 for.
Anyways, just thought I'd share my excitement.

Brown's Toyota always seems to have the lowest price with or without a
TLCA discount. It actually makes the TLCA discount useless. I bought my
factory manuals from Brown's 8 years ago for about $55. The best money I
have ever spent on my truck, second best was the TJM bumper. The book will
pay for itself by showing you the proper way to do jobs.

This is a great message, and I hope all of you will take a few minutes
out of your time to write a brief note of support. It is easy to get caught
up in our own lives and not bother to fight for our rights. But the reality
of the situation is that we are losing more and more areas to 4wheel and the
trend isn't just going to go away. Now is the time to do something about
it. The longer it is left go the less we will be able to save.
I would encourage everyone to let the list know of such issues, and take
 the time to get involved.

I agree these things shouldn't be expected to be done for free, but around
my part of the world I get the feeling that the local dealer is tacking more
than a few hours of labor for these other things.
Does it really take 2 1/2 hours extra to change the timing belt along with
the head gasket repair?? What is considered normal hour charges to have
these additional things tended too?? I realize labor rates vary around the
country but what are the flat rate hour charges for these items. Then I can
determine if the local dealer is out of line.

Subject: Need Info On a '82 TREKKER
I just bought a 1982 Toyota Trekker. What I know about it, is that it is a prototype, made before the 4-Runner. It looks like a 4-Runner, except built out of a short wheelbase 1982 4X4 truck. The back half of the truck is made completely out of fibreglass and the cab forward is steel.
I also know, that there were 1982-83 Trailblazers and Wolverines made, just like my Trekker. Just a different named depending on whether it was made in Canada or in the USA.
What I was wondering if anyone has more info on these Toyota trucks.
 Thanks

Well I finally got around to selling my 72 FJ55 and now I begin my
search for the perfect mini. Ever since I saw a custom cab in a
parking lot I have wanted to own one, now is my chance. I would
consider a custom cab anywhere in any condition (within reason). Also
a 4runner would be nice too below I will list what my dream truck
would be if you know or have something similar please drop me a line:
 - -1985 Toyota Custom Cab(the 2dr 4-seater)Pick-up or 4runner
-the year isn't really important as long as it has a solid front
 - -TURBO would be great but at least EFI
 - -5speed manual
 - -2-3" lift with +31"
 - -SR5
 - -TOYOTA full gauges
 - -Low miles
 - -all the usual stuff you find on a wish list.
 - -in colorado
I am actually getting a bit frustrated because i have been looking for
about two weeks and I have missed a good $1900 '84 4runner by a mater
of minutes and most heart breaking was a perfect 86' turbo, PW,PL,
cruise, loaded, it even had the very rare digital
gauges! all for only $3300 and I missed it :-( But it had an auto so I

Do the valve clearances HOT as possible, not too loose and not too tight.
Might try the old stethoscope trick to figure out which valve is knocking
from which cylinder at least and only adjust that one. Did you have your
heads/valves re-done as part of the rebuild?
p.s. I hope your not talking about the fuel injector tick tick, much higher

any specific make/models that work well for a 22R. I have seen the $75
dollar ones at discount auto shops, and the $200 ones in Performance
Products, and am hoping the cheapy ones perform as well as the more spendy
ones, but I want to put the right one in. Let me know if you have done this,
 or have any input.

I don't know why you would want to put manual hubs on your TRD Tacoma.
I have a 1997 Tacoma and love not having to get out and lock in the hubs
all the time. I had a 1991 Toy with manual hubs and don't miss them at
all. In reference to your question: It will void the warranty on the
ADD system and the hubs themselves but nothing else. I would just leave
the ADD system alone and drive the truck as is. The only thing manual
hubs are good for is adding a LOCKER to the front Diff. I don't
recommend this unless your a heavy hitting wheeler. A front locker will
make the truck hard to handle in snow and ice and will create steering
problems when engaged. A rear locker is enough for most 4x4
 enthusiasts.

 Subject: 98 TRD observations. questions
Well I just bought a new truck. white 3.4l Xtra , TRD, ABS, and
thankfully no power windows. I got a pretty good end of year deal- the
 99s
are coming in. (no changes as far as i can tell). One thing i couldn't
 get
was the bucket seat w/ center cosole. So I need to find a junk yard
 seat
or aftermarket. Really need a center console. TRD is also not
 available
with manual hubs! The TRD suspension is far superior to the non TRD SR5
 i
drove and the V6 has effortless power (of course i'm used to an
 amazingly
underpowered 91 cruiser). I havn't had it really offroad yet as i'm
 taking
it easy breaking it in which brings me to questions. I gather gentle,
varied, relatively high RPM is best for breakin but why is it
 recommended
to stay under 55MPH. This is only 2300 RPM in fourth.
The dealer said not to worry about an oil change till 3000miles. I know
this is bunk, but at what miles should the first change be?
According to fourwheeler truck of the year review the TRD came with
 factory
4.10:1 gears but the Toy literature says it is 3.91:1. So what gears do
 I
 have?
Will adding manual hubs void any warranty and is there a detailed
description anywhere of how to do this?
Thanks to the list for helping me make the decision..

It all depends how you plan to use your 4x4. If you're like me, you'll
probably want the locking hubs... but I drive an '88 pickup, not a brand
new Tacoma. I don't think I'd take the Tacoma through the Rubicon. If you
plan to need the Tacoma for mud and snow in the winter, I'd guess that the
ADD would be great. As for the front locker on my IFS Toy... it's great!
It does make my truck go straight, but I don't have any other qualms. I
love not having to worry about pulling a tire off the ground anymore. I
think that the front locker makes more difference than having a rear locker.
The reason is that I don't pull rear tires as often. I've climbed hills
with just my rear ARB and then tried the same hills with just the front
engaged. It was easier with just the front locker than with just the rear.
I still wish I could get an ARB for my 7.5" diff though. Turning on the
slabs adds a little stress up front. By the way, I have a Lockright in
 front.

I have a 1997 Tacoma Xtra Cab V6. I use the truck as a daily driver but
do enjoy off roading mildly. I don't do any "tear up your truck" off
roading. I would like a little more ground clearance, and the abiltiy
to put on a larger tire. I currently have 15X10 Centerline HT-II's and
31X10.50 tires. I have been considering the Pro Comp 4" lift. I would
like to hear from somone with experience with this lift. I have a
 couple of questions:
 1. Does this lift cause anything to wear or break?
 2. Will it allow for 33X12.50 tires on 15X10 wheels with no rubbing
 at full turn and
 or compression?
 3. Does it cause any vibration or other annoying problems that I
 should know about?
 any help is greatly appreciated....

better than the Pro comp one. It's adjustable from stock height to I

Does anyone else have problems with their battery terminals staying
clean and corrosion free? Every other week I have to go and remove
the cable clamps and clean the terminals so that I can get my 4Runner
to start. I will be driving around for a week or two with no
problems, then at some random time I will not be able to start the
engine until I remove both clamps and clean the terminals. Then she
starts and runs with no other problems for a week or two more. My
battery is never dead, the alternater works ( I tested it ) and
all the cables appear to be connected well. Is this just a Toyota
thing? Would a smear of dielectric grease on the clamps and
terminals prevent this. Should I get the type of cable that has the
clamps integrated into it instead of the bolt on to the cable type
clamps that I have now. Thanks in advance.

This will sound strange, but, how warm should the front differential
on an IFS 1st Gen 4Runner get when the hubs are NOT locked and when
the vehicle is just driving around in 2WD??? The reason I ask is
that I have noticed that my front differential gets hot to the
touch merely from driving around. Is this just the heat being
radiated from the engine or could it be that perhaps a wheel bearing
or something in the spindle area is developing friction and warming
up the whole thing? I warned that this would sound strange!
Maybe people could feel the front diff for me after driving
around and see if it is hot. Thanks.
