Take a look at http://www.dunlop.com and http://www.goodyear.com for tire
/rim width recomendations, check the min/max suggested rim width If width
is what you want, try going to something like a 245/70-15" or 255/70's
(more common there are a lot of these type) on those rims -
it will be a LOT closer to the origional diameter but give you a little
more "meat" on the road. I personally swear by Dunlop Radial Rover RV's
for a good all-around LT tire. They wear better, ride quieter, and do a
LOT better in mud than the BFG Radial T/A's, they give a good ride
off-road too. I've 'converted' 4 people to these tires, and they love
'em - even one die-hard BFG man that ran nothing but on his Jeeps
(2 cherokees, 1 J GC, 1 CJ-5, and 1 Wrangler - now his current 3 ALL have
dunlops!) For pricing/size availability go to http://www.tirerack.com
it's got an easy to use interface.

here's the symptoms: When I go the start
it in the morning, usually starts fine. Then after it's been sitting for a
while it won't start. It just clicks once like I've got a dead battery but
it's fine. Starter is good (when it goes, it turns over fine) and I don't
think it's the sileniod because it's a pretty new starter. But after I try
and start it if I go back in a while it will start fine!? So anyway, it's
just one click and the batt isn't dead.
**************************************
I had the same problem. The only time my Toy ever failed to get me to work
on time! It turned out that the cable that runs directly from the battery
to the starter had come slightly loose ('83 pickup w/ '87 22R). Check all
your connections and make sure they are clean and tight.

recommendations as to what else I should have done while they are doing the
HG? Do they completely pull the engine to do the hg? I have a 94' Runner

obtain a good quality kit with stainless steel braided hoses. I have run the
cheaper kits and the rubber hoses tend to dry out and leak (even to the
point of blowout) after a year or so. The stainless covering also provides
added protection from rocks as well. Special attention should be paid to
location and position of the oil filter bracket. Mine is on the frame
underneath the drivers side door and positioned such that the filters are
mounted upright. This prevents the oil from draining out when the motor is
shut down (irregardless of filter brand). If at all possible, locate the
filter(s) in a well protected area and fabricate a skid plate for them. I
have never installed one on a 3liter V-6, so I don't know what, if any,
additional fittings will be required to negotiate the installation. On
22R's, none are required as there is plenty of room for the hoses to make
natural bends without any crimping.

I replaced my gasket at about 52K miles and they don't pull the enginge out
unless the block is damaged. They will pull the heads and then make a choice
after they see what it looks like. Clutch should be good to 100K - 150K miles
depending on tire size and driving style.

Here's a few other things for them to check/replace:
Timing belt and related tensioners/idlers,
Knock sensor shield wire ($12),
Water pump,
Cam and crankshaft seals,
Fan belts,
Valve adjustment,
While the above listed services are much easier to be performed while
the heads are off, don't expect to have them done for free. Labor costs
money! I've seen a few posts from disappointed truck owners that expect
all of these items to be covered with the head gasket repair and that is
not so. The labor costs are significantly reduced however, once the
engine is opened up.

Subject: Last minute problems (always)
Well, as in installing a new clutch, tranny, & Marlin crawler was not enough
things to deal with a few days before an event, I have to add to the list.
After some testing this afternoon, I realized that the rear driveshaft had not
been shortened enough, and that I was able to make the driveshaft compress
fully - not good. So, a call to the driveshaft shop & they say they can get
it done by tomorrow afternoon if I have it there when they open in the
morning. That one is close, but shouldn't delay me too much.
So, I go out to the truck with the intent of pulling the driveshaft, but I get
to looking around. After A few minutes I decided to just build a new rear
crossmember for the IFS drop brackets since the one in there is bent beyond
recognition. I cut the last 4" or so off the old bracket to retain the bolt
holes. Then I took a length of 2x1" tubing & welded that inside the end
pieces. Much better than the old one. That one took about an hour while the
little lady sat in the garage telling me we need to go out to eat. So I clean
up & we do.
We get back & she heads home. Hmmm... Why not build a skid plate for
underneath the entire IFS? - yeah, thats the thing to do (this project started
at about 9:00 pm), So, off comes the front skid plate. Of course, during
this both lower bolts break the nut free in the crossmember. There was enough
room to get a box end in there to hold them though - only a minor delay. I
already had some 3/16 plate cut to 15x17". I had to make room for the diff
drain plug, so I cut two slits with the portable band saw (gotta love it) &
then notched the bottom with a die grinder & bent it till it broke free. I
then welded the new plate to the end of the front skid plate, with some flat
stock gussets. I didnlt have time to drill holes for the rear mounting at the
back of the IFS, so I just welded the plate to my new crossmember mentioned
earlier. It looks pretty rough, but I will really appreciate it this weekend.
So, its about a quarter till 11:00, & while I am putting up the tools, I
remember - oh yeah, I have to pull the rear driveshaft...

From: "Kenneth Sigel" Subject: RE: Last minute problems (always)
Does everyone work on their Toys at the last minute? I was on Rubicon last
weekend, but before I left town Friday, I had to fix my air compressor.
Since I just finished my front bumper that doubles as an air tank, I decided
to plumb the line to the new tank. I also wanted to check the existing tank
which was a 2.5 gallon that I mounted above the driveshaft. Keep in mind
that I started at noon and my friends were meeting me at 4pm - and I still
hadn't packed my truck! After unbolting the mounts for the tank, I realized
that it was fine, but should have a new 1/4" NPT fitting on it... so I make
a run to the store for fittings... and an inline oiler... and another
oil/water filter would be good... So anyway, I finished getting that
together when I realized it would be really cool to have another gauge
inside my truck... back to the store. Luckily, Grand Auto had the airline
I needed with fittings. Just about the time I finished the setup, I
realized that two of my four rocklights were still on the floor of my garage
and I'd probably want them. Of course rocklights shouldn't take more than
15 minutes to hook up... NOT! Another separate fuse panel would be cool...
back to the store. I finally got the lights done, but my truck still wasn't
packed and it was almost 4pm. I pulled a load of laundry out of the dryer
and shoved what I needed in a bag. My friends showed up while I was putting
my tools back in my toolbox. They decided to go to McD's while I packed my
truck. I got everything in and my friends came back... except one of them
remembered that they had the key to their garage and their roommate's car
would have been locked up without it... so off he went. We left town
around 6pm.

What's your question?

This is dependent on where the flow restriction is. On Toy V6s for instance, the
biggest restriction is the crossover pipe.

From: "Sandy and Terry" Subject: Re: Wheeling places near Lake Alpine
The Slick Rock trail head is at Lake Alpine. Take the west entrance and
follow the road. Soon the paved road will become dirt. Then you will pass
through a gate. Here you should lock your hubs. The trail is only 3 miles
but is fun and has a couple of challenging spots. One in particular is the
hill at the end before the bridge. The trail also has some great places to
camp along a stream. The trail comes out at Utica Resevoir.
Farther up Hwy 4 is the Deer Valley trail. The trail head is at the Hermit
Valley camp ground. Look for the J**P sign toward the rear of the camp
ground. This trail goes all the way out to Hwy 88. There is one challenging
pile of rocks at the very beginning of the trail. After you cross Deer
Creek at the top there are some nice places to camp in a pretty meadow.
Below Lake Alpine, there is a series of loops called Mattley Loop. Also,
Corral Hollow OHV trail is in this area. Look for a sign for forest service
road 7N09. The road will take you into the OHV area.
There is a easy trail that goes to the top of Mt. Reba. Take the turn off
to the Bear Valley Ski Resort. The trail head is about 100 yds on the
right.
The Sour Grass trail is a few miles off Hwy 4. In the town of Dorrington
take the Boards Crossing Road turn off. Follow the main road through a
residential section and then down the mountain to the Stanislaus River.
There is a bridge crossing the river. On the other side of the bridge on
the left is a washed out camp ground. At the camp ground is the trail head
for Sour Grass. This trail is only 2 miles in and does not go through.
The Ramsey trail head is east of Dorrington but you have to know where to
turn off.
In summary there a lot of fun trails in the area. Have a great time.

From: Charles Brooks Subject: Amazing accident
I witnessed an amazing accident today. A guy in a dune buggy
was going thru the intersection was stopped at and a Chevy
C1500 ran the light and slammed into the buggy! The guy was
moving pretty good, I would guess him at about 45 mph. Well
he broadsides the buggy and flings the thing way the hell off
the road. I jumped out of my truck and ran over to the buggy
(Along with about 5 other people that saw what happened) when
we got there the guys in the buggy were already out and looking
around! Man as hard as they were hit I expected to see a bunch
of twisted metal but there wasn't nearly that much damage.
I am totally impressed. I guess it pays to drive around in a
rollcage with an engine! I got the guys number and he's
gonna give me an estimate for a REAL cage in my truck. Mean
while I think I'm gonna go looking for a buggy!
Charles Brooks
P.S. They rolled the buggy back onto the wheels and were
able to drive away!!!

Subject: Help!! New engine, rebuild, or ?????
I have been on the list for a few months and have really enjoyed it, and
now I am in need of some serious help. I have an 88 4Runner that I
bought a few months ago, it now has 200,800 miles on it (I flipped it
over on my honeymoon in Yellowstone and got some great pictures doing
the Toyota jump in a beautifull area, I heard a rumor that you can send
such pictures to Toyota and they will post them on the Internet
somewhere, anyone have any info?), and the other day I was on my way to
school and it overheated. I didn't catch it until it was too late (it
burst a hose and lost all fluid fast and didn't take too long to
overheat). By the time I got it over to the side and stopped, the
engine was smoking bad. It doesn't start and when I try to start it
steam comes out of the radiator which I have heard means a cracked head
or blown head gasket. Here is my question, what can I do? How can I
tell if it is the gasket or head. What would be involved in getting it
rebuilt? Is it worth getting rebuilt (with 200k and a few oil leaks) or
should I look into a new engine? I don't have any money now and really
need my car so what would be the minimum to get it running? If it is
just a gasket, what other things should I do/replace while I am into it
(timing chain, clean/rebore pistons etc)? I have had a little
experience working with cars but not much, but I really would like to
get to know my 4Runner inside and out and do a lot of work on it in the
future, so what better way than to start with the engine? I have a good
set of tools and a father who is very knowledgable and willing to help
and a strong desire to learn. I will probably go out and buy the
factory engine manual, (is that a good idea? I have one for 78-88
4Runners and pickups written by Robert Bentley, would it be enough?)
These may seem like simple questions for most of you but I would really
appreciate any and all input as soon as possible as I would like to get
going on it tomorrow (Sat.).
Thanks in advance,
Jeremiah Hansen

scratches from stepping on them. Bottom side has one small dent, and a
few good scrapes. Little rust.
$50 takes 'em. Local guys have priority since I'm not too excited
