 Okay-
In order to swap a 87 22re turbo in to a 89 truck that
originally had a 22re what needs to be taken from the donor
truck? From what I can figure out I need the exhast to the
cat, The air cleaner assembly and the ECU. Is there
anything I'm missing? Are the wiring harnesses different?
or can I use mine? Any help would be great.

I am sick of the wimpy stock bumper on my 85 4runner and am going to
begin building my own very heavy duty winch bumper for it. What i was
wondering is there anyone out there that is willing to share the pattern
they used to mount their bumper to the frame for a strong hold? I just
do not want to mess anything up by making an experimental bumper mount.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I also have a 4Runner 90 30 SR5...I had my expansion valve redone this year.
I also had to replace the harmonic balancer.
Are you using r-12 or r-134 freon? What kinda problems have you had
since you had this valve replaced? Just recharge or what? Did they tell
you what was causing the this yearly fix..?
OK, maybe you can help me...my A/C is working fine now, but the
truck idles at 500 rpm wit or without A/C.. is that normal? (it is an
automatic 4x4). Also what could cause a surge at idle rpm and an excessive
shake in the motor? Once you get up in speed (rpm) the truck runs pretty
 smooth?

Hi. Just want to comment that this engine (18RG) is so good that we use
this in our roadracing Toyota Celicas. Very Excellant engines for
roadracing, I can't say whether their applicable for wheelin' but in our
rear wheel drive '76 and '77 Celicas my brother and I are very
successful when roadracing. Lots of mid to top end power, especially
nice when it breathes thru 44mm Mikuni carbs and an ITG filter setup,
ITG has 2 inch airhorns that fits IN this filter assembly. To get parts
 - - including those hard to find parts for this engine as well as others -
Call Toysport or e-mail them at toysport@ix.netcom.com. TRD makes red
high performance spark plugs for this engine and they used to make a
 header.
 Good luck.

MTL is the wrong lube for your transmission. The best bet is MT 90.
MTL does not have enough viscosity for the 4Runner trannies. BTW, when
you change the transmission oil, don't forget your poor, overworked
transfer case. MT-90 is good for transfer cases too.
I use MT-90 in my vintage racer and in my 4Runner. IMHO it's the best
 tranny lube I've used.

I would suggest that you find a look at a few commercial bumpers to get
ideas for mounting the winch and mounting the bumper to the frame. My
Smittybuilt front winch bumper actually mounts to the front of the truck
in 6 separate locations but it would be very difficult to describe.
One thing I don't like about the smittybuilt is how much weight is carried
at the ends of the bumper, it really adversely affects the handling of the
truck. I would try to keep most of the weight i.e. winch and mounting
 centered.

 I have a '94 4Runner w/3VZE that's been consuming oil. I have seen no
little droplets under the truck and there's no tailpipe smoke
whatsoever. Initially I suspected I didn't tighten the oil filter
enough last time I did an oil change. This initially turned out to be
the case as consumption was reduced after I found it was leaking at the
 filter and tightened it.
Now, the truck is still consuming oil, less than before, but still about
a quart every 2-1/2 weeks. Any thoughts on this? Is this a sign of a
bad PCV valve? Performance is good, no smokey ehaust, oil pressure is
 excellent, etc...
 Thoughts? Advice?

 Andy,
Also check for leaks around the cam covers.
I had the exact same symptoms on my 180kmile engine
and fought it for a year. At the end it needed a quart of oil
for just about every tank of gas but the power was still OK
and it didn't smoke. I changed the PCV valve and that didn't
help. I guess maybe oil was being burned, I'll never know
though because I replaced the engine a couple months ago
and sold the old one to a friend for $100. The new engine uses
 about 1/2 quart in 3000 miles :-)

 If it's a V6 w/5 speed, the transmission is 6 point somethingorother
pints (I think 6.2, but I'm not sure) and the xfer case is 2 point
somethingorother pints (2.4 I think, but again not certain). Filling
these is a breeze, because when they're full, the oil will begin to
spill from the filler opening. Make sure the truck is fully warmed up
and driven to heat the old oil prior to draining.
In the diff, I don't remember the capacity, but MT-90 is not the rigjht
lube there. Use Red Line 75w90 gear oil. Go here for more info:

I didn't mean to imply that the expansion valve replacement had caused
any other problems to occur, but was just stating that for the first
four years or so everything was fine, and then I've had to do something
with the A/C every year since.
First it was just a recharge. But there was a bad schraeder valve so
the freon slowly leaked out. So the next year another recharge. The
guy said something about the valve but said he managed to fix it (as
opposed to replace it). But it still leaked, so the next year another
recharge (that was in March). They couldn't find anything wrong so they
also added some tracer dye. I had it reexamined in June because it
wasn't cooling as well anymore, and they found - you guessed it - a bad
schraeder valve. Fortunately this recharge was still under warranty and
it cost me parts and labor the change the valve only. Then it worked
really, really good. They guy said I could just about freeze meat, and
sometimes I think he might have been right.
Then two weeks ago the high pressure discharge line blew.
In fixing the line, the shop also retrofitted the system for FreeZone,
which according to the EPA web site, is 79% R-134a, 19% R142b, and 2%
lubricant. The guy at the shop said it works better than straight R-134
 but who really knows?

I also made the "don't paint it" comment. Yes, I probably shouldn't

The real point was that unless you know for sure that the paint doesn't

Make sure the bulbs are good. You didn't say if they both went out at
once or if someone just told you they are both out. The dealer may
think it's a fuse because they're both out, but they could have just
both burned out at different times and this is the first time anyone's
 mentioned it to you.
If the bulbs are okay, check the brake switch itself. Pull the wiring
connector and connect a continuity tester to the switch leads. You
should get continuity when you press on the brake pedal.

 Greetings all:
I am venturing in "uncharted territory", I'm "thinking" again. :-0
Anyway, I *think* that I am doing the rear Differential work on
my '84 Toyota 4WD "correctly", i would just like some reassurance.
So far I have "pulled" the rear axles, removed the pumkin, and found
a "cast iron bearing spacer" ?
I *thought* the bearing spacer was "supposed" to be a "crush-sleeve"?
Sooo, I have bought the "Toyota" "crush-sleeve" from the Dealer ;-)
Yeah, I know, still I wanted to know for sure what exactly there

Theres a thread going on about Gen3 4Runner tires, but I thought I add that I run
235/85R16 Nokia Hakka 10s in the winter on my IFS Gen1 4Runner.
They are mounted on Chevy offset rims - 16x6, 3.5" backspacing. But because the
rim is so narrow, the "stick out" is the same as my summer tires -
 31x10.5 BFG's on a 15x7, 4.5 backspacing
There is mild rubbing at full lock - it kisses the seam. I fixed it a bit by re-setting
the fender well tabs that secure the inner fender liner to the fender. (they had been
bent by having the mud flaps torn off while reversing).
I dunno if chains will fit (or if my chains will fit on them) since I havent need chains
since I got the tires :)

I know that with a Crush-sleeve you only get one chance to get
the torque on the pinion nut correct. Right?
In other words, If i cruch this bearing spacer incorrectly and
remove, then a New Crush-sleeve is required?
When I removed the cast iron type bearing spacer, there were some
"paper thin" washers in there too. between the front pinion bearing,

It would work great for a hydraulic clutch. The downside is that you must
remove absolutely _all_ of the glycol-based fluid from the lines and
master/slave cylinders. This can be tedious.

 Dee,
I think the deal is Toyota manufactured thousands of identical rear ends
and determined the exact spacer needed to provide the right pinion
bearing preload at the proper torque. So instead of doing a crush sleeve,
they made a precise cast iron spacer. The shims you saw are for fine
 tuning.
When installing an aftermarket set of gears, the cast iron spacer is
 probably
not close enough so the crush sleeve is used. The crush sleeve IS a one
time deal, once you crush it too far, the bearing preload would be too great
when the proper pinion nut torque was used.
 Hope that helps

From: Jeff Moskovitz Subject: Flex-a-Lite Electric fans
Before I ask my little question, let me just say that I HAVE searched
through the list's archives but haven't found the definitive answer, so
bear with me if you feel this ground has been covered before:
I recently completed some pretty significant upgrades/mods to my 22R-TE
engine (T3/T4 turbo, LC Engineering modified head and cam, bigger
valves, bigger injectors). I'm now in the process of fine-tuning it; it
makes plenty of power and will make more once I get it dialed in :-) One
thing I've noticed, however, is that it's running hotter than it did
before the modifications. This doesn't surprise me, as the new turbo
moves a lot more air than the stock turbo, and I've had my foot in it,
too...which was kinda the point of the whole exercise...
My question is: can someone who has installed one of the Flex-a-Lite
model 165 fans tell me how good a job it does at cooling the engine? My
stock cooling system (the 22R-TE came with a 3 row radiator) seems
capable, but I'm worried about long slow climbs and extended drives
overwhelming it. As it is, the (stock) temperature needle still rests
below the halfway mark, but it's up a few millimeters from where it
rested before the mods. Also, I've noticed that there is slightly more
coolant displaced into the overflow tank than before. Nothing critical,
nothing approaching the high side of the gauge, but then I haven't really
pushed it yet, either. I don't have A/C, just a bigger turbo and a lead
foot, so if the Flex-a-Lite does a better job than the stock fan, I'd be
 eager to add it.
 Any thoughts would be appreciated.
 Thanks!
 Jeff

 Dee,
You may have a hard time finding those shims because
nobody does it that way. Most people use the crush sleeve.
Any shims you find are going to be for setting the pinion
depth to obtain a 'good pattern'.
Your best bet is to measure the pinion shaft diameter
and visit some transmission / diff shops to see if they have
shims about the right size. Then once you get the
pinion depth set and you're ready to set preload, put
the flange on and torque the pinion nut down to 200ft-lbs
or whatever spec is and see if the preload is correct.
If the preload is too great then add shims and vice versa.
I've never done it this way so there may be some reason
it won't work that I'm not thinking of, like I said, most
 people use a crush sleeve.
