 Steve,
Go up into Red Rock Canyon. Once you get past the drive-thru
(SPECTACULAR!) area.. there are a number of trails you can take in the
area. off to the left and right. I have gone off just outside of town..
into the desert. It's pretty nice. Just wish I had had my truck out
there... I was working for DEA at the time and only had a rental for a
few months... amazing how far you can get with a Ford Probe before you
have to call the rental company for a tow!
Really... you can go most directions from Vegas and find places to
wheel. Ask at the local gas stations etc.

which is a better engine to rebuild? Toyota parts? after market?

The present engine is very reliable, I've put on about 13,000 miles

 Ken, I have some questions.
 1. Will the Turbo Direct 8.75 diff work on a '96 Tacoma?
 2. If so, has Turbo Direct looked into the "Leaf Spring Wrap Up" issue with
the Tacomas? This issue is when coming to a stop, the leaf springs will
allow the rear diff to wrap. When letting of the brakes, this wrap will
cause the drive train to clunk.
 3. If you have, does your diff help in any way? I would not expect it to
 cause it is the springs.
 4. If not, would your diff and some aftermarket springs fix this issue.
I am wanting desperately to lift, install lockers, tires, etc to my Tacoma,
but cannot until the wrap up problem is solved. I really like what you guys
at Turbo direct have done and would like to start with your upgrade.

Brahma shells are NOT fiberglass. Brahma shells are NOT fiberglass. Brahma
shells are NOT fiberglass. They are thermoplastic; the same stuff plastic
 ice coolers are made of.
As far as Leers go, you can look at a previous post by me about how long a
Leer shell lasted on the back of my '97 Ranger on a trip to Baja.

chucked the shell in the trash..."
My experience has been entirely different. I mounted a Brahma shell to the
back of my '81 in June 1987, and it has been on there for over 350k very
hard miles, including 8 seasons as a chase truck for our 5-16 off-road race
car. I have had to replace 1 tailgate lock assembly (because of thieves)
and 1 rubber window gasket (because it's rarely in the garage). I recommend
 them unconditionally.
As far as hauling loads, that stuff goes inside. After all, isn't that the
 whole purpose of a shell?

I posted about a month ago that the A/C on my recently purchased 93
xtracab was very loud. Well, just got the truck back from DAS and the
Compressor is new. Still loud though - those aftermarket compressors
must just be that way. Have the old one, so I'm going to mount it in
 the 4Runner with an airtank...
Since I got the back the presets on my Alpine Receiver don't stay. I
new that they'd be gone when they disconnected the battery, but when I
reset them, they don't stay. If I set a preset, change the station and
try to use the preset button, I get the default 87.7 or whatever. I am
not turning the truck off between setting the preset and using the
button.... For you stereo guys out there, any ideas?????? This is
bugging me a ton. Any info would be helpful.
For those of you with TrailMaster 4" ifs kits... Anyone tried using the
stock SR5 wheels? When I bought the truck, it had the stock sr5 wheels
with 31's on it and no rubbing problems. I want to put my 33" BFG's on
the stock sr5 wheels, but I'm thinking the sidewall will be ripped by
the upper a-arm. I know Chris G. had 33's on his stock wheels with the
Procomp lift, but is there enough clearance with the trailmaster? I
don't mind running a 1/4" spacer if I have to - this truck is never off
road. Any help would be great.

 thanks.>>>>> Tankgirl1,
We have not had any problems with our '88 4Runner SR5 with V6. Other
than the regular maintenance items. We have replaced the clutch master
cylinder, clutch flex-line, rebuilt the alternator, replaced the
solenoid contacts in the starter, replaced the O2 sensor, timing belt
has been replaced 2 or 3 times, water pump was replaced last time the
timing belt was replaced, replaced the idler arm bushings, brakes, belts
& hoses. The PO broke two Automatic Hubs, so he had the local Toyota
dealer install some Warn Premium manual hubs. It still has the original
head gaskets and clutch. The other amazing thing is that it doesn't have
the saggy butt syndrome. The only problems we have had were the power
window switches don't seem to always work, and the power steering pump
sometimes has a little whine in it. Other than that, I must say that it
has been a great truck. Ours has been meticuluously taken care of (3000
mile oil changes) all it's life, and many of the miles were highway
miles. I don't worry at all about going on a 500 mile trip, I just make
sure that the oil change is up to date, and I check the tires. Good luck
with your 4Runner. The only personality problem our 4Runner has is it's
 owners.

I plan on using 3/4" bolts for the shackles, but my frame and spring bushing
take 18mm bolts. What I need help with, is how I can make the rubber bushing
inside diameter 3/4". 18mm drill bits and bolts are way too hard to find so
this is why I'm going 3/4".
I've tried drilling them with a drill bit but that didn't seem to do much to
 the rubber bushing.
My next idea is to heat a 3/4" bolt and pass it through the bushing. Somehow
I doubt that will work that great either.

You either have a battery inside the unit or you have a second wire that
is hot all the time (my cell phone has this) to maintain memory when the
ignition is off. Check for a second hot wire that's either disconnected
or has a bad fuse. If you don't have that, then ask your dealer if it
 has a battery.

 I have a 5-speed Toyota Hilux SSR <1993> of 2.8 litres 3L-diesel
engine. The Hilux was bought as a recond unit from Japan and currently
it has about 73,000 km on the speedo.
Whenever I step on the accelerator to overtake or to climb a slope in
third or fourth gear, black smoke can be seen belching out of the
exhaust pipe in huge quantities. However, when I am cruising, this
 does not happen.
I have asked around and got various answers to this problem, all of
them sound plausible. Some said the fuel pump should be overhauled,
while others said the fuel nozzles should be changed while some
 recommend fuel treatment.
 What should I check first?

Back smoke is caused by excess fuel, blue smoke is caused by burning oil and
white smoke is steam that comes from burning water in the engine. If your sure
it's black and not blue that yes you should look at your fuel system. It may be
dumping in too much fuel. If the fuel pump is putting out too much pressure than
it can cause the float valve to be pushed open, then the bowl fills up and then
dumps too much fuel into the engine. It could also be a bad or sticky float
valve or "sunk" float. It could also be carbon build up from running cheap gas
causing pre ignition, is it pinging? If so the timing may be too far advanced
 for the fuel your using.
Check the fuel pressure, at all RPM's
 Replace the fuel filter
 Verify the wet float level.
 Check the timing.
Run the best gas you can buy for 6 months.

I think he is charging $75.00 per joint (as I hear because he had to buy
a tig welder for the job)
If anyone talks with him ask how it is working.
Next time I talk with him I will also ask, but that might be awhile.

It won't happen in every day driving, only when the rear diff is at an angle to
the truck frame, you don't have that happen on the street unless you backing one
wheel up a ramp. If you don't what to have problems with the drive shaft then go
ahead and change the springs and break line, but leave the stock shocks on and
don't remove the sway bar this will prevent the shaft from hitting the tank.
It can hit it hard enough to dent the gas tank and with that much force is seems
possible to wear a hole in the tank especially if the drive shaft balance weight
were to come in contact with the tank. It could also damage the drive shaft
and/or U joints. I don't like the explosive prospects that failure in this area
 would cause.

Glen has the same thing for Sammi's. I
was just looking at it the other day for a friend & thinking that this would
be a great addition to the Toy front axle.
The idea is to not allow the outer cup to break apart, as the ring holds it
together. This looks like a pretty good way to keep the birfielf together,
but.... I always wonder what will be forced to break if the birfoeld problem
 is eliminated.
As to having him do it, I would be some of you with welding & matal skills
could come up with one of these for yourself. By the way, Glan's sell for
 like $65 I think.

 Subject: Idle problems - 22RE
My idle problems are back, and I would love to know how to make them go away.
 Here are the symptoms:
Soetimes the idle sticks at varying rpm's. Saturday it seemed to like 2000.
The rpm's sometimes also cycle, like when you have the A/C on & foot on the
brake. Sometimes the idle will be really low.
I think this has somethig to do with that little thing unfer the throttle
linkage at the throttle body (technical terms of course).
Can this be fixed with me just picking up a part at the dealer this week, or
 does this require major surgery?
I really don't feel lie surgery before the trip to Tellico this weekend...
 thanks for any help!

 Subject: Trail ride
Saturday I was able to be on the first trail I have ever been on that I think
comes the closest to wheeling out west on the rocks. I was a passenger on
this one due to my truck (with a 4" lift & 33's) sits too low & I did not feel
like dragging all day. We actually rode a creek bed for about 3 miles, & it
 took us about 8 hours.
We honestly were on nothing but rocks for 98% of the ride. Large boulders
everywhere, rock steps, ledges, BIG ledges, and lots of rock. It was the
first trail I have been on where there really was no obstacle, just technical
 driving the whole time.
We made pretty good time with the 13 vehicles we had. Our least built vehicle
was a Jeep with 33" mud terrains & 4.56 gears with only a rear locker. Here
are some of the other vehicles that were with us.
 - -CJ7 on 38" swampers & full size un-cut Chevy axles. F&R lockers
 - -CJ7 on 44" swampers & 3/4 ton un-cut Chevy axles F&R lockers
 - -YJ on 38" swampers 44 front, 9" rear, F&R lockers
 - -CJ7 on 35" boggers 44 rear, 30 front, F&R lockers
 CJ8 on 38" swampers, Dana 60 front, Dana 70 rear (both un-cut), lockers F&R
 - -S10 Blazer on 42" swampers, 3/4 un-cut Chevy axles, 350, F&R lockers
 - -?? Willys truck, ?? engine (big & purrrs), ugly as can be, Dana 70 rear, 60
Front, 44" swampers front, 44" boggers rear, F&R lockers
This is most of the big awesome ones. I was really in for a treat as it was a
great ride. We really only had a few breakage problems - one rear U joint
strap let go & killed the joint. One other guy over extended his front
driveshaft on a climb & messed up the splines a bit. Someone else loaned him
a shaft & that was fixed.
There is already one trail report for this trail that was done a few weeks
ago. Here it is, but I took a lot of pics, and there were 3 video recorders
running so I hope we can get some more on our web site real soon.

This weekend, my radio started doing something strange. When playing tapes or listening to the radio (any station) the music suddenly stops (but the LCD lights are still on, and I can see the words "TAPE" or the station), only to restart again in a few seconds. The tape player sounds like the tape is warped, playing at different speeds, etc. Any ideas on what to look for? Its a factory unit with tape, AM/FM. Thanks!

None that I can think of. I've had EXCELLENT luck with my "first-year" V-6.
Haven't even needed a new headgasket yet. I've used Mobil 1 motor and gear
oil in the engine and tranny/transfer/diffs since the 5000 mile mark (it
currently has 154K miles). The manual calls for valve adjustments every 60K
miles, so you may want to start thinking about that. I wouldn't worry about
replacing the timing belt for awhile, as it easily lasts 80K-plus miles.
I'm still on the original starter, water pump, hubs, alternator, and even
the oxygen sensor. The u-joints, the clutch, the brakes, the idler arm, the
shocks, the tires and the headlights are about the only things I've
 replaced so far.

 Hi All,
This engine has sat in the garage for a long time (2 years). When it
was used, it was running very well. The engine was swapped out for an
18RG engine in a roadracing Celica. It was re-built by a my friend who
is a Master Toyota Mechanic working at AutoHaus Toyota in Northbrook,
IL. It did not burn any oil and is in good shape once you shake the dust
off of it. Why am I selling it? He left the engine in my garage after he
performed the engine swap and it's been there ever since. Why don't I
want it? I have an 18RG engine in my '77 Celica that's running just fine
 and my truck's a '96 4Runner with the 5VZ-FE. I love the 20R's and 22RE
engines - they are on the top of my list for reliability (I should know,
I raced a 20R for years and NEVER had an engine problem) but I don't
have any room in my garage. I'll accept any reasonable offers and you
would have to arrange the pickup for this engine please. Please email me
to inquire. The engine is in Elmwood Park, IL near Chicago.

When mine was out of adjustment for a few days, I would get rpm
falling/rising when my foot was on the brake. I hope you have a toy
manual because you will need it to adjust it (and some feeler gauges and
 an ohm meter).

Get the ones that will fit the stock frame holes, and then use a drill to
drill them out - they should be 'firm' enough to drill easily... If not put
them in the freezer overnight then drill.
