Subject: Trip to Tellico
I know I have been late relaying this information, but here is what I have.
I will be at Tellico ORV area the third weekend of August. That will be the
weekend of the 14th (Friday) through the 16th (Sunday). I will get there
some time Thursday night (the 13th) so that I can ride all day Friday and Sat.
& take it easy on SUnday before I come home.
I know some of you expressed interest in coming, so that is when I will be
there. There should be a few other people there, and I know Sheldon has
contacted me on the phone to say he will be there.
I don't really have much as far as camping or motel info. I plan to stay at
the camping area right there at the state line. I will try to find out what
places there are to stay if someone needs it. It may be so hot I might just
get a room too.
Let me know if you are going to be able to make it & we can look out for
people.

From: Tony Bartlett Subject: National Springs
Someone mentioned that they have heard people bitch about National
Springs.
It all depends on what you want and how much money and time you have on
hand.
In my opinion Nationals are some of the best springs around. But, they
are expensive, VERY SOFT and if you do not get the weight of you truck
perfect you will run into problems.
I have known people who have had to send springs back to National more
than a few times before the correct ride height was achieved.
I also know someone who runs nationals, rock crawls with the best of
them and like very high speed running. I rode with him once and it was
amazing how well his Jeep handled and it rode close to a cadillac over
some very rough surfaces at high speed and it cornered very well. But,
he also knows how to drive.
The other problem for solid axle toys it that there spring packs are
very thick. With them this thick you have to do something up front with
the steering arm (like ball on top) because the drag link will hit the
u-bolts.
Right now I do not think you can beat the Alcan front springs for
Toyota's. I am still not completly satisfied with there rear springs to
buy a set. I know about 7 people with Alcans in all corners and the
rears just do not work very well. Once again this is my opinion. Also,
RMOR is always doing R&D with the Alcans so maybe the rears will come
around.
Tony.

Jay, if you still have not found the problem you might check fuel
pressure. Maybe the check valve in the tank is sticking open in hot
weather. Allowing the fuel in the main line to drain back into tank.
It will act like running out of gas on startup until fuel pressure gets
to normal in the line.
I lived in Phoenix for over a year and never ran into any type of vapor
lock problem. Also, did you ever have that type of problem when you had
the stock engine. I just have not heard of vapor lock on a Toyota.
With fuel injection, if my brain is working correctly today, you would
have to get the fuel really hot to boil at 30PSI.

From: Jay Prince Subject: Outfitting for heavy camper
Hello all-
I'm new to the list. So, apologies if this is a pedestrian issue I
should have been able to research elsewhere.
I've got an 87 4x4 and I want to put an Alaskan Camper shell on it.
These things weigh about 1,700-1,900 pounds. The previous owner added a
leaf spring, but I don't know the details...and they kept the owners
manual when they sold me the truck.
So, some questions-
What's the stock capacity of this truck? Any way to know what this leaf
spring has done?
I want to take it to Inuvik, which is way up north of the arctic circle
and involves a long drive over a gravel road ... a rough trip with a
heavy camper has me concerned.
Do I need to upgrade the front suspension? Is there a safe set of things
I can just go and do to eliminate worries? Also, it seems to me that this
could put more strain on the transmission and engine than it was designed
for. I'm willing to spend the money now because I want to put another
100k miles on it with this camper, and I don't want to be stuck on the
side of the road in the middle of nowhere because I saved a couple
hundred dollars here. Can this be done safely with this truck?
So many questions, I appreciate your indulgence!
Jay

From: Jim Walters Jim, I too have the toyota gauge set you refer to. On my 85'p/u with
fullcamper shell with safari rack on top and after four years of
hard wheeling I become cautious at 30degrees. However I feel the 30
mark is a liability issue for manufacters. In my reality I've had my
truck on 45(this is a point of extreme pucker!) and highly
unsettling. So I feel 30 is completely safe. If you mix speed with
that number and hit a bump, that is were you'll have trouble.
On these angle go as slow as possible.

Hey all,
I finally got my gears in and broken in 500 miles ago and over the
last few weeks Ive noticed that I have plenty of power and maintained
65 on the highway no problem but on a trip to the beach last weekend,
(300miles) but it seems like some times the power just dissapears and
I will slow down to 55 even on flat surfaces? Also some days the gear
shift will be almost hot to the touch but most of the time it is cool.
Is there some way I can cool down my manual transmission?, or is this
a sign of another problem?
Thanks in advance!

Also - how about a leaky injector (stuck open) or a bad cold-start injector
(open also). It sounds like something is leting the fuel pressure bleed off
when hot. Try ooking up a pressure guage to the fuel rail and moitor it when
the problem is likely to happen.

The PO probably added what's called an "add-a-leaf" spring to raise the rear
end, and compensate for heavier loads. It probably raised the rear 1-2" and
added up to 500 lbs of load carrying capacity (advertised) I have to admit
1900 lbs is a LOT to put on the rear of a toy.... Does this unit replace the
bed or is it a slide-in? After installing the camper I'd look in to a set of
"air bags" that bolt between the frame and the axle, and can be aired up to
compensate for loads.>What's the stock capacity of this truck?
I think the capacity of the bed is like 1000 lbs MAX.>Do I need to upgrade the front suspension?
Probably not upgrade, since most of the weight will be over the rear wheels,
just make sure everything is in good shape (ball-joints, idler arm, a-arm
bushings, etc.).>Is there a safe set of things>I can just go and do to eliminate worries?
Well, make absolutely sure that everything is in tip-top shape before you
leave. Make sure the front end is solid with no loose ball-joints/bushings,
etc. For that kind of weight I'd almost suggest having the entire rear-end
rebuilt with all new bearings (esp. at the axles), and replace the U-joints
in the rear if they are the origionals. Check for slop on the slip joint
too. A driveline failure is the last thing that you want in the "middle of
nowhere"> Also, it seems to me that this>could put more strain on the transmission and engine than it was designed>for.
This is verry true, although there were quite a few toyota 'camper
conversions' that ran on the older pickup chassis. You can try finding one
of those with the dually rear axle to carry the weight, or even one of the
old "1-ton" model trucks would probably have a better rear. Make sure that
the truck is geared for the tires you are running, and I'd even consider
going 1 step lower. (i.e. 4.88's with 31's, 4.56's w/30's). I have towed
more than that much weight with my 4-cyl toys, and they did "ok", but I
wouldn't really want to tow that much weight for 1000 miles in the outback,
much less carry it over the rear axle.>I'm willing to spend the money now because I want to put another>100k miles on it with this camper, and I don't want to be stuck on the>side of the road in the middle of nowhere because I saved a couple>hundred dollars here. Can this be done safely with this truck?
OK here's what you do - go get yourself a 4.3L vortec V-6 / 700-R4 out of a
97 (or so) chevy, hook it up to the toy transfer case, get a Ford Nodular 9"
rear end cut down to the proper width, and run 16" dual rear wheels on a set
of heavier capacity custom springs. That should pull the weight, be
reliable, and let you "spend the money now" ;-)
Realisticly, give the truck a good tune-up, change the oil, replace
the filers (fuel and air filter), clean the injectors (if FI), flush the
coolant, I like adding Red-Line Water wetter to reduce coolant temps, if it's
an auto - add a huge trans oil cooler, change the Diff fluids, and the
transfer case fluid. Make sure all belts and hoses are in good shape, and if
you replace them, carry the old ones as spares. Check the plug
wires/cap/rotor for wear. Might look into carrying a spare ignitor module
too.
Mabye James (tonka-tuff man) can add his $.02 about his expierences with the
load capacity of the stock rear axle, since I think I remember him saying
that he carries a lot of equipment in the outback??
Good luck,
- - Brian

Subject: T150 - Not?
From AutoWeek 6/29/98 p6
T'd off:
Dont call the next ful-size Toyota truck the T150 and dont
call the new Lincolin the LS6 or LS8. When Toyota filed to
register the T150 name as a trademark after the truck's
introduction (as a road ready concept) at the Chicago
show, Ford protested, saying its new name was too
similar to F-150. (although the Federal trademark office
does not consider styling issues - the Toyota also *looks*
like the Ford pickup.)
Toyota quickly capitulated. "Toyota would always take the
high road with that," a spokesman said.
Then Toyota played its trump card. It countered that
Lincolin's new Ls6 and LS8 names too closely
resembeled LS 300 and LS 400, as in Lexus. So
Ford dropped teh numbers from the LS series name.
Still Ford claims victory. "That [dropping the numbers]
was under discussion anyway," a Ford spokesman said.

I've found that whenever I've had tires put on or repaired or whatever, the

know now to check the pressure after the tire monkeys have been fooling
with my tires.....

No way lo rider! "Jour pom-poms will drag in de mud!" My Runner is at
the garage as we speak having the same offending bolts torched out and
new ones installed. About $12/ side for bolts, nuts, washers, moon
shaped thingy ( technical term) Thanks to Chris Geiger for the tips.
You might want to check out his page on this. The dealer could have
them in time for you to do it. The guy at the shop is charging me .5
hours to torch and replace them all! Hope you can get them done!
BTW In preparation for the NE run, I replaced my rear springs and did
some experimenting that may be of interest to some of you. I removed the
load leaf and replaced it with the bottom spring from my old Toyota
spring pack, trimmed about 6 inches on each end.( to clear the clamps)
It made the ride a bit more firm, raised it up about 2" over where it
should have been, and I can twist it up so my shocks are limiting travel.
I can't get any wheel hop so I don't think they are wrapping. With the
torsion bars cranked a bit, and the 1" blocks that are going in today
too, I should be ready to go. Cheap lift and good travel.
Is that 13.5" number the factory setting? I think Chris gave a 14 or 15"
number that you could crank to. He has a newer truck than ours tho.

people from this list are registered to attend.
Also, I'm curious if any of you coming would be interested in helping me

will be photographing the event, but I'd like to have another vehicle,
somewhere else in the line also taking pics. E-mail me directly if
you're interested...the pics will be used in a trail report for the

I have 2 double cab and 3 single cab Toyota Hi-Lux pickups [working
model to your 4 runner type] one is an 85 2.4 diesel , the others are 87

the warrantee expired the aluminum head became porous . The local agent
replaced it after 8 weeks of @#$%@! . Then it broke a rod 10 days after
their head job. I had to pay for that job . Now all 4 steering end ball
joints need to be replaced with 27 000 miles on the clock the agent
says enough time for the parts to go .One end broke 7 Mts. / under 1000
miles ago. That end also has to be replaced . I just broke my first Toy
end on the 85 which has driven the worst trails here in Guyana . It
broke after completing a 540 mile run that the 4 x 4 trucks said that we
could not make [we took 24 hr's ,they took 3 day's]. My real big @#$%@!
is that UMM agent want's US $ 390 per end /$$$1560 for the 4 . A set of
break pads is $285 .
Dose any one know what steering system UMM uses . The axle
looks like a Dana 44 . Any one in the EU/EEC can help me find a
reasonable priced supplier of parts for the UMM.
1997 double cab F & R ARB"S . The diesel 6 inch lift
33's mudders . All the others have 32's mud terrains. All work in the
fields as I run an Agrochemical supply company here.

Ok, I was really dissapointed in my truck today. Drag raced a buddy
with a stock 85 22r- 4x4 regular cab short bed and normal wimpy size
tires but with 170k on it. He made my truck look pretty sorry. Now
mine's a 90 V6 extended cab SR5 4x4 with about 90k on it. However, it
has 32's, which is only one size larger than stock. Is that really what
I should expect? I have always thought that my truck was a little
underpowerd, but its got 4.56's. So what gives? I've had the truck at
the dealer and they say there's nothing wrong with it. It does have a
slight chatter, might be valves or ping- can't figure either. Dealer
changed timing from 13 to 10 degrees and said it would take care of it.
I'm sick of dealing with the dealer cause either they find the problem
and charge an arm and leg or they say there's nothing wrong. I would
like to have a little more power, but I can't afford to anything out of
the catalogs, So im looking for cheap fixes and something to cure the
chatter- Ive tried different gas. Maybe a pcv valve or something.

How about this one - My father-in-law had a '88 chevy K-1500 - with the heavy
duty suspension and tall skinny 16" tires (like 235/85-16's?), anyhow those
tires were rated at 80 PSI, and the factory recommended like 65 PSI... well
he's complaining of bad gas mileage one day, and I take a look at his truck,
and find that the tires have been AIRED DOWN by the shop he goes to - 32 PSI,
right on the mark, all 4 tires.... Well I aired them back up and WA-LA 6-8
more MPG, like 200 additional miles on the 38 gal tank! this happened like 4
more times! - every time he got it serviced, they did him the "favor" of
checking his tires... Same thing happened to me on my avalon - tires rated at
45PSI, and I get approx. 400 miles to the tank, and then when they air them
down to 32 PSI, I get about 300 miles to the tank. Toyota recommends like 38
PSI, so I wouldn't be quite as down on them if they followed the
recommendations from the factory.>I think maybe>it's because they think people will forget to ever check their air
Well in my opinion it's because they DONT think....

In a message dated 98-07-08 15:09:10 EDT, you write:> So im looking for cheap fixes and something to cure the> chatter- Ive tried different gas. Maybe a pcv valve or something.> I would recommend some basic options like changing the plugs (Nippondenzo's
are best in my book) and other basic tune-up items. You may want to look into
a better exhaust system. Most local shops should be able to do you a complete
exhaust for around $200. I would say that is $200 well spent. Another option
is a K&N air filter, but those get mixed reviews (works for me - better top
end).
