Take your superlift springs apart and remove the overload leaf, Take
your stock springs apart and take the overload leaf on to the superlift
springs. This will soften the ride. Do not run the Superlift springs
without an over load leaf or the main leafs of your springs will take on
some weird shapes and turn your wheeler into a low-rider. I am speaking
from experience-one set of 4" NWOR springs that are S-shaped-need to
take them and see if I can get them straightened and re-arched.

On my '84, I've got just under 400hp worth of supercharged V-8 turning 38s
with the stock axles front and rear. I have had no problems yet with the
front axle, but the rear has gone through a set of ring and pinion gears
and this happened pulling out into traffic on paved road. Most of my
wheeling is also in mud, dirt trails, and mud (I LIKE mud :-)) and the
stock front axle has performed well so far. I do believe though that I am
living on borrowed time so to speak and am always looking for an upgrade
 especially in the rear.

Thanks for that James, I'm doing a bit of investigation into 2.8 diesels
at the moment it seems that although they are almost double the price of
a 2.4td everyone recommends them as the better option. What sort of
dollars would you expect to pay for them in OZ?? If they are
significantly cheaper I might see about getting one imported.
Just been speaking to one of the ARB agents over here and he hasn't
heard of the torsion bar replacement but is going to Fax ARB Australia
and see if he can get some info out of them... (the saga continues)
I've also ordered a catalogue from NWOR off their web-site so hopefully
 that will turn up soon..

This is my first question to the digest. I humbly ask for your
patience as I am new not only to the digest but to the net itself.
(What did this one just crawl out from a cave you ask?, ... , no just
finished University, ... , that should explain it!) If my net
etiquette is off, just let me know and I'll correct it pronto. My
question: I have an 88 4Runner V6 with a leaky oil pan gasket. The
area of the leak is at the very back of the pan in front of the
bellhousing on the auto tranny. My problem is this...there is some
sort of metal shield sandwiched between the engine and tranny
that makes getting clearance to the back bolts of the oil pan
impossible. I called some shops and was told that to replace
the oil pan gasket would cost around 200 or more dollars, I was given
the explanation that the gasket is actually "made" by the mechanic
with a special Toyota approved substance. Also, that with my auto
tranny, the tranny mounts would have to be loosened to get clearance
and to be able to drop the oil pan. The strange thing is that the
auto parts stores supposedly sell the exact gasket I need for $14.
Can anyone of you knowledgeable people help me with this???

From: James J Williams Subject: a little more dateline
Karl, you are corrrect. I went back to the site and checked their
measure and it is in units per million registered vehicles. Thus,
simply adding the numbers does not yield the correct result until you
divide by the number of vehicle classes that were added. Another thing
I kind of glazed over the first time was that the measure was
fatalities, not actual roll-over events. I think a clearer picture
could be ascertained if they reported how many actual roll-overs there
were per million vehicles and how many fatalities per million vehicles.
Are there numerous small car rollovers, but they don't always cause
fatalities?? Does every utility rollover lead to a fatality?? How many
of the deceased -- in each vehicle category-- were unbelted during the
crash? Could it be that the pick-ups and utility vehicles were carrying
 more people during the crashes??
I feel the need to defend my vehicle against the insurance companies and
the government, but 4x4's are not for everybody. The truth is that
4x4's are not cars and they behave differently. If you don't realize
that you should not own one. The problem is that people have purchased
these vehicles without understanding how to drive them and what they
were designed for. If you don't use it for what it's made for then you
have wasted your money! (Do you buy a chevette to go fast, or an acura
NSX to cart the family to grandma's house? Then why buy a 4x4 and never
leave the pavement???) I fear that the manufacturers will cave to this
scare and make the new trucks even MORE like cars. I'd much rather see
the masses scared away from these "killers" and buy something else.
That way maybe the manufacturers will not change designs. Let a truck
continue to be built like a truck, used like a truck by people who know
the difference between a car and a truck.
It seems that we are all saying the same thing: make something else
for the unaware, pavement-going public if they don't know how to drive.
 Leave our trucks alone!

I have to correct this. Each catagory is per million vehicles registered
of that type. For example, SUV would have 98 roll overs/million
registered. If you add the others up, it would be something like 94 roll
overs/7 million registered. I don't remember how many non-SUV catagories

I like the L.C. Engineering Header that I have. It is ceramic coated,
silver in color it fits good and it has an 02 sensor mount. It also gets
compliments when it is seen by others. I can't tell you if there was any
performance gains with it because I changed out the whole motor the same
 time I installed the header.

help in morphing a wireframe drawing and the actual vehicle. The

I'd be glad to help. I have a stock 94 xcab I can take photos of. The

Allthough my heart goes out to Mrs. O'Neal's loss of her husband, I was
SHOCKED and appalled at your one sided story on SUV safty !! All you
could do was trash them as "UNSAFE" but NEVER did you find any of the
THOUSANDS of SUV owners that use these vehicles for what they were
intended to be used for! It seems that SUV's are the LATEST "Yuppie"
craze and it seems from your story that NONE of these yuppie's have the
slightest idea of how to either drive or handle one correctly ! I'll
tell you , as the owner of a lifted <4" OVER stock w/ 33" tires> Ford
 F150 AND a RADICALLY lifted Toyota <14 " of lift w/33" tires> I have
driven both vehicles VERY hard AND off-road and, to date, NEVER had one
even attempt to roll on me ! It seems that IF you are going to do a
story on these you would present BOTH sides and for GODS sake ,,,,,QUIT
blaming a NON THINKING object for the reckless behavior of the so called
 "THINKING" operator !!!!
It would take no time at all for your staff, via the internet, to
coontact RESPONSIBLE operators of SUV's and get the other side of the
story. As far as Toyota's go, try TLCA.com or the Toyota section at
off-road.com. These are GREAT people and I'm sure they'd give you more
than enough info to write a responsible story......
Instead of MORE GOV regulations, of which we have more than enough
now, try going after the DEALERS that need to recommend training for
 owners of SUV's .
Once again, NBC has shown it's LIBERAL stance and blames the
inanimate object for the crime. I'll bet you people blame GUNS for
killing people, don't you? Just remember, it takes a person to hold,
aim, and FIRE a gun, it CAN'T do it ALL by itself !!!! Same thing goes
for SUV's,,,,,If they are operated right and with alittle common sense,
they are as safe or SAFER than ANY standard vehicle on the road today...
I know you'll probably NEVER print any of this, but atleast you MIGHT
attempt a responsible story NEXT time you find a subject of interest.

This may be easier and cheaper...
The shop manuals have FULL dimenstions - at least on the engineering hard points.
This means Body mounts to body mounts - diagonals through the cab etc...

 Subject: Re: Rough rider
 Brandon, I have a 1984 Toy 4X4 X-cab with a 22R and it ran fine at idle
but lost almost all power when trying to drive and get up to speed on
the road. There was a clanking and rattling in my catylitic converter so
I separated the exaust behind the converter. When I looked inside from
the rear I found that the inside of the converter self destructed into
large peices. Since they dont check emissions here to close i broke up
all of the chunks and cleared the converter out untill I can replace it.
Now the truck runs fine and power again.
I know muffler shops check to see if the converter is fine by blowing a
hole in the exaust right before the converter but I didn't feel like
breaking out my torch. This might not solve your power problem but it
 sure fixed mine!

Hey Brandon did you try plugging up the brake booster and seeing if it
idles better?yep, didn't help>Have you had the timing chain off for any reason lately? A long time

At zero the little dot on the sprocket is right at the top, it is not
perfectly on the top but if it were to move one link either way it would
 be
further off..> The timing will show correctly as long as you put the dist in there

 I'd say a compression would>tell you more,
Compression was 160 and the timing is at factory, 5degrees>also be careful not to lean out the mixture on the weber too much it
 will

 clean.
Thanks for the tip, hope it doesn't get ruined with all this messing
 with
the engine running as bad as it is ;(>>Good luck..>>Sheldon>>>>===========================================================

I agree with pretty much everything you said. However, unfortunately
if the masses shy away from SUV's, you can bet your ass the
manufacturers WILL change designs. On the upside, at least there
should be some cheap used trucks out there that have never been
 'wheeled. :)

 here is what they list
 84-89 2 & 4wd w/ 5 speed 2.2L, 2.4L, FI/ 20R, 22R, 22RE, 22REC ($219)

Hmmm... I have a 90 truck (production date 8/89 I beleive according to the

a difference in these years? I thought the 22RE's were all the same? Anybody
know how to clear this up? Is this just a case of the ad writers not knowing
 what they were talking about?
