From: Jeff Moskovitz Subject: 22R-TE web site
 Hey everybody,
I've finally got the first draft of my 22R-TE web site together. There's
still a lot of fleshing out to do, but I've got some pictures of my truck
and a feature piece on installing an intercooler.
Please check it out, if you're so inclined. The URL is
 http://www.well.com/user/mosk
I plan to make this site sort of "one stop shopping" for 22R-TE
modifications and ideas, so I'd like to get as much feedback as possible,
especially regarding the content and speed of the site. (There are a lot
of high quality pictures, so it's a bit slow.) If people find that it's
too slow (and I'm sure some people will), I might swap the JPEGs for
GIFs, but I think it looks pretty sharp as is.
Thanks, and let me know what you think...

 from t4x4pickup.com
General info about your vehicle, self, etc.: the 4Runner is
stock but will have soon air lockers and 4.70:1 or dual
t-cases. I am looking for a 60/40 split bench seat so the
family can go out with me. now the only way we all can go is
to go in the chevy suburban and that is too BIG for the
trails I like. I like hard core wheeling rocks, hills,
trail that people I go with say I an crazy for going down
them. I have had five others Toyotas three '81s a '79 and a
'84 x-cab I liked it the best. but the 4Runner is GREAT I
like it. I will not sell it as one person found that out
 this week.

What is the largest block that will fit without interferfering with the E

What are the shackle lengths people have found (over stock) and what is the
 actual lift they give?
Downey off-road sells trick billet aluminum 1" rear blocks for $65
and they come with heavy-duty u-bolts.

From: Tony Bartlett Subject: Wheel balancing
The way you balance your wheels is a personal choice.
There are two ways to balance
Static Balance- Having weights only in one line somewhere on the wheel
 (inside, outside or center)
Dynamic Balance- having weights in two lines somewhere (inside and
outside, inside and outside off of bead (tape weights), inside bead and
inside next to center of wheel.
People like Static Balancing so they do not have weights showing on the
outside of thier wheels, some wheels have no lip for weights.
Static Balancing only balances a tire to prevent bouncing, it will still
have a shimmy (steering wheel shake).
Dynamic balances a tire to prevent bouncing and shimmy.
In my personal experience Dynamic is the best way to go. It just
depends on if you want weights showing on the outside of the wheel.

David Moore wrote :>What is the largest block that will fit without interferfering with the E>brake cable?
Just thought I would share my experience with blocks. When I bought my
4Runner, it had 2-inch blocks in the rear. The e-brake cable (which
normally goes OVER the leaf springs) went under them, but rubbed. I
 replaced the 2-inch
blocks with 3-inch blocks to avoid the rubbing, and level out the truck.
2.5-inch blocks probably would have worked as well.
I have a rear torque rod, to prevent axle-wrap, and wheel hopping. With this
setup, I really can't see the advantage of switching from a block lift, to
springs. It maintains the stock ride, and articulation. It seems to me that
springs with more arch, will not articulate as well, unless they were longer
(like the Mazda springs). I'm not building a radical rig, like others on the
list, and the truck has done all the tough trails here in Northern Calif,
including the Rubicon. Good enuf for me.
By the way, about your rear bumper/hitch issue. I would invest in a custom
bumper, or maybe the Smitty bumper. A lot cheaper than having to replace
that rear tailgate, if you ever whack it.

Subject: Project 86 RTE (turbo) 4x4 for sale
 Howdy folks,
I'm selling my truck to buy something I don't have to work on. I'm
 interested in trades too.
My truck has some really nice points and some really bad ones; it may be
best suited as a project truck or a parts truck, but I drive it every day.
First, here are the good points:
 1. Factory air conditioning that works well.
 2. New front wheel bearings, inner and outer... very expensive...
 3. New front rotors, calipers and pads; turned rear drums with new shoes
 and wheel cylinders... also
 very expensive.
 4. The motor has 25,000 miles on it. The guy I bought it from had a shop
 install a rebuilt motor.
I have the receipt. The cam chain was making noise though, so I took it
 apart. The plastic guide
on the driver's side was splitting. ( I can't believe the guides are
 made of plastic...)
I installed a new chain, tensioner and guides. Everything looked fine
 except the one guide, but
I bought a kit from NAPA, so I used all the new parts. Compression reads
 150-150-135-135. I
think the rest of the motor is in good shape. when the turbo kicks in,
 it sure makes power.
 5. New (less than a year old) high-flow CAT, 2 1/4 aluminized exhaust and a
 high-flow muffler.
 6. Rancho RS 5000 shocks -- Too stiff for me, but some folks like them.
 7. Polished factory alloys in flawless shape with about 5000 miles on a set
 of BF Goodrich A/T 30x9.50
 8. The suspension is all nice and tight; I don't know when it's been
 replaced, but it obviously has.
 Now, the bad stuff:
 1. The rear differential clunks.
 2. The trans will sometimes jump out of first gear.
 3. The body is only OK and the bed has some damage.
 4. The turbocharger is letting some oil past the seals.
 5. The seat is very uncomfortable.
 6. The front differential has a problem; the lash feels nice, but one of
 the "flanges" is sloppy.
 7. Both front axels are junk.
The bottom line is that it needs obvious work, but I drive it daily and
it's never failed me. I have a stack of receipts that the last owner passed
on to me and I have added more than a few myself. You may be interested in
 these details.
If there's any interest, email me directly and I'll give you my phone
number so you can ask anything I didn't list.
I am selling the truck because I have a new career that demands my full
attention. I have no time for a project.
Thanks, and sorry for the long post.

This isn't just a page, it's an email discussion forum, which is constantly
changing, with new people and old, coming and going, and so of course there will
be some redundancy. It's sorta like a newsgroup in that respect. It's not just a
static page that's updated daily, it grows with the people in it. People that
weren't subscribed, say, 6 months ago are not going to have seen the messages
about certain swaps or compatibility issues, but they're in the proper forum to
discuss and get answers/opinions for their queries. And they're going to ask. So
it may come up again...but that's the nature of the beast. It's just the way
that this type of communication works. Digest mode may help you sort through the
redundancies if you don't want to read them over and over (or you can just
ignore/delete the topics that you see over and over if you like).
Admin, if I overstepped, please let me know.

First of all, its an email list, not a 'page'. By the way, the associated
pages are at "http://www.off-road.com/toyota". I presume this is the first
 email list you've been on.
This list is basically unedited, and we like it that way. When I ask a
question, I don't want to see one guys opinion of the answer, I like to
see several people's experiences. When I see a question from someone else
and I think I have an answer, I offer one, whether or not it agrees with
other answers. This is the nature of email mailing lists, and be thankful
that generally, this list has a high signal-noise ratio.
Now, if i misunderstood you and your complaint isn't the number of
answers, but the number of redundant 'quoting' I agree 100%. People need
to trim from their messages irrelevant sections from previous messages and
whatnot. But that is not the job of the editors - it is the job of the
people who post the messages. If the editors had to edit every message
that came through this list, this list wouldn't exist. The Off-road.com
staff who runs this list and edits the toyota pages is an unpaid staff who
does the work for their love of toyotas and wheeling, and for no other
compensation. We have jobs, families, and our own trucks to work on and
improve. So please understand if we spend the precious few hours we
can spend on net-related toyota stuff doing the things we feel are most
valuable for the online toyota 4x4 community, which is updating the web
pages, answering the ridiculous amounts of email we get (though we do try
to push people to this list, where they are likely to get more accurate
info :), and handling the administrivia of this list. Editing or
moderating the toy4x4 discussions is way down our list of priorities.

If I feel like wasting my money and going to 16in rims and 32in tires, will
they fit a 98 Tacoma TRD without rubbing? Also, I noticed the 98 4runner
comes with 16in rims. Are these compatible with the Tacoma's? I'm probably a
bit more concerned with turning radius than wheel travel.
 Thanks.
 Carl
P.S. I just had the dealer service my Tacoma due to a vibration it the
steering at high speeds. They had to replace my Goodyear's with Toyo's to
solve the problem. The Goodyear's could not be balanced. I'm also not too
impressed with the quality of the Toyota rims, two of mine require a lot of
 weights to balance.

I have sorted and indexed a bunch of info from the list, and stored it on
my website. There is a good thread on front wheel - cone washer removal
in the tips and techniques section. You may want to check it out.

 I think a 1" block will fit, but a 2" will probably interfere. With a 3"
block, you just swap the cable to the underside of the spring. I have a
pair of cast-iron TrailMaster tapered rear blocks (3") that I'd be quite
willing to part with (you pay shipping and they're yours) but I don't have
any usable U-bolts to go with them.> What are the shackle lengths people have found (over stock) and what is the> actual lift they give?> I have a pair on my truck that is about 2.5" longer than stock, and they

 Joey,
I went to school at Cal Poly and they have a few clubs in the area. I
believe SLO 4 Wheelers is based just north of SLO (10 miles) in Santa
Margarita and Cal Poly has a club called the Poly Goats. I remember a few
years ago during an "open house" at Cal Poly, the Poly Goats were showing
off their rigs by driving over a few cars in the parking lot. That got
lots of attention. It was kind of like watching monster trucks, but with
rigs from stock to $$$$ all doing it. There are so many places to go
wheeling in SLO. E-mail me and I'll let you know about more places. Oh
yeah, if you are into motorcycles, there is also a club on campus called
 the Penguins (I think).

When I added a 1" body lift on my 1st gen 4Runner (factory roll cage) I've
noticed that the rear ends of the cage are mounted to the floor right over a
rubber bushing that would normally rest on the frame. Of course, with the
lift, there's now an inch or air between the rubber and the frame.
Has anyone done anything about this extra pseudo-body mount? I was thinking
making some sort of extension for the rubber piece to get it down to the frame.

 - --- end of quote ---
I did this with a '97 - bought 16X7 "used" steel takeoff rims from a new
4Runner and mounted 235/85R16 tires. The offset is the same as the supplied
alloy Tacoma rims. This works out to roughly 32X9.50. They don't rub in
turning and haven't rubbed on suspension travel yet but I haven't taken it
offroad. Note that these are narrower tires than many would want, so the
turning clearance remains like it was with 31X10.50s.

< Subject: Re: Grounding CB antenna> When I first tried it 2 days ago it didn't work, then I tried it again
yesterday and, guess what...it woked! Still can't figure out what the
 original problem was...
That would worry me more than having it not work! At least when it's
not working you know you have a problem. It's sounds like you've now
got an intermittent problem and keying up the mike at the wrong time
could definitely fry something. (Sorry, don't mean to worry you but
things the fix themselves also have a tendency to break themselves again
 later.)
Does the coax go straight from the antenna into the radio, or does it go
through some other connectors on the way? If it goes through other
connections, one of them might be the problem. Since you looked at the
Firestik site, you already know that they recommend checking to see that
there is no continuity between the center conductor and the ground
before connecting the radio to a new antenna / antenna line. You'll
also have read their recommendation for using coax with a twisted center
conductor vs. solid wire, especially when the wire gets pinched in door
 frames and stuff.
As for the SWR question, the guy at the CB shop was correct - removing
the meter does not change the SWR reading "at the point where the meter
was connected". That last part is the real key. The correct way to
connect an SWR meter to the antenna line is to remove the antenna line
from the radio, attach the SWR meter to the radio using a patch cable,
and attach the antenna line to the meter. What you measure is the
amount of power being reflected by the antenna at the point it connects
to the meter. After you tune the antenna, you remove the meter and
patch cord, and reconnect the antenna directly to the radio. Since the
length of the antenna line from the point of measurement hasn't changed,
the SWR will remain the same.
If you connect the SWR to the radio using a patch cord and then leave
the patch cord in place after you tune the antenna (for example, if it's
inconvenient to get to the radio directly so you use a patch cord as an
extension to make connections more accesiible) then your SWR will change
once you remove the meter because the antenna line has been increased by
the length of the patch cord and the intervening connectors.

I really get great travel with the blocks I have now & the only negative part
is the axlew wrap. The torque bar will solve that so I guess I shouldn't

I eally don't want to go screwing with what I have now since it just plain

Subject: Project 86 RTE (turbo) 4x4 for sale- info added
 Howdy folks,
I'm selling my truck to buy something I don't have to work on. I'm
 interested in trades too.
My truck has some really nice points and some really bad ones; it may be
best suited as a project truck or a parts truck, but I drive it every day.
First, here are the good points:
 1. Factory air conditioning that works well.
 2. New front wheel bearings, (NAPA) inner and outer... very expensive...
 3. New front rotors, calipers and pads (NAPA); turned rear drums with new
 shoes and wheel cylinders...
new rear wheel bearings too (NAPA)... also very expensive.
 4. The motor has 25,000 miles on it. The guy I bought it from had a shop
 install a rebuilt motor.
I have the receipt. The cam chain was making noise though, so I took it
 apart. The plastic guide
on the driver's side was splitting. ( I can't believe the guides are
 made of plastic...)
I installed a new chain, tensioner and guides. Everything looked fine
 except the one guide, but
I bought a kit from NAPA, so I used all the new parts. Compression reads
 150-150-135-135. I
think the rest of the motor is in good shape. when the turbo kicks in,
 it sure makes power.
 5. New (less than a year old) high-flow CAT, 2 1/4 aluminized exhaust and a
 high-flow muffler.
 6. Rancho RS 5000 shocks -- way too stiff for me, but some folks like them.
 7. Polished factory alloys in flawless shape with about 5000 miles on a set
 of BF Goodrich A/T 30x9.50
 8. The suspension is all nice and tight; I don't know when it's been
 replaced, but it obviously has.
 9. Push bar
 10. New factory turbo manifold.
 Now, the bad stuff:
 1. The rear differential clunks.
 2. The trans will sometimes jump out of first gear.
 3. The body is pretty much OK, but the bed has some damage: the small lower
 panels in front and behind
 the left rear wheel.
 4. The turbocharger is letting some oil past the seals.
 5. The seat is very uncomfortable.
 6. The front differential has a problem; the lash feels nice, but one of
 the "flanges" is sloppy.
 7. Both front axels (inner and outer joints) are junk.
The bottom line is that it needs obvious work, but it has tons of
potential. I drive it daily and it's never failed me. I have a stack of
receipts that the last owner passed on to me and I have added more than a
few myself. You may be interested in these details. I'm not sure what it's
worth; I'm thinking 2500 without the wheels and tires. I have a set of
steel wheels to put on. All I need right now is a decent car or hilux that
I don't have to work on to drive to and from work.
If there's any interest, email me directly and I'll give you my phone
number so you can ask anything I didn't list.
I am selling the truck because I have a new career that demands my full
attention. I have no time for a project.
 Thanks,
 Eric (central California, Fresno)

I think I'll have to agree here. I towed my 85 shortbed on a tow bar
with my 85 longbed from Knoxville, TN to Buffalo, NY. It made it but it
was a bit hairy sometimes. You just don't have the weight and "presence"
on the road to feel comfortable. I'm sure a trailer with brakes would
help but it is more weight. But "desperate men do desperate things"! I
 needed to get home.
BTW the power was only a bit of a problem on the hills but the stopping
and general feeling of being in control was lacking.
 Hope this helps, Bud R
