The 383 stroker (what they call a 350 with longer stroke) is a solid
engine.
If it was built right and is using stock hardware as far as intake and
carbs
it should produce well over the hp you mentioned. Maybe they're
measuring at
the crank or wheel or steering wheel. Maybe that's why it seems low, who
knows. But the main thing is it will be a reliable and definitely
torquey
engine. If you have the cash to drop and want it do it. There's one
thing to
consider is that if you ever have to buy parts you'll need an intimate
knowledge of the different parts layout and how they affect spacing such
as
sump clearances, oil pan sizes, piston clearance, valvage, etc. A stock
motor is always easier to work on unless you've built up a stroker
engine.

Isn't it even worse that that? I thought the force (rolling resistance)
was proportional with the speed, requiring power to be squared to
overcome it.> 2. Inertial forces- These are forces required to get all the parts of the> drivetrain moving. Agreed - and its rotating mass too, so you have to consider both regular
and rotating mass inertia as well. This adds up in a hurry.> 3. Forces to climb hills- It takes power to essentially lift the truck> away from the center of the earth. The weight of the truck has not changed> enough with the new tires to consider it, so this force will not alter your> fuel usage.

Actually, i think you're off by a factor of power again here. As I recall,
air resistance goes up with the square of the speed, so power would have
to be cubed to overcome? This is why our trucks get so much better mileage
at 55 than 65! :)> By lifting your truck with larger tires, you have increased the frontal> area a little.

Agreed. Its nice to see some real physics on this list once in a while :)
The upshot for fuel economy is to have small skinny tires, inflated full,
on a lightweight aerodynamic vehicle travelling at a reasonable speed.
Toyotas lose on all counts, especially when we build them for 4x4ing.
For a fascinating physics-heavy discussion on this subject, check out
http://members.home.net/rck/phor/06-Speed.html
His whole 'physics of racing' series is quite awesome, and far more
applicable to 4x4ing that you might first think.

Neither. The shround dramatically increases the efficiency of the fan to

Hey all-
I recently read a conversation about the H.P. in the v-6 chevy/GMC engine.
I had a '97 GMC Sierra w/ the v-6, but hated the payments and the
inability to tinker (I bought it brand new) so I sold it and got back my
2nd Toy ('92 x-cab 4x4)
I believe from '96 on chevy revamped their engines and got 200HP @ 4400
rpm's. I know for sure they did in '97 in their trucks. So that may be a
better candidate for some of you, if you can find a wrecked one.

General info about your vehicle, self, etc.:
I got bitten by the wheeling bug in the summer of 96, when I
bought my Jeep, a 71 cj5 - it's still my main trail vehicle. I joined
Esprit De Four, a local 4wheel drive club, in December of 96.
I bought my 4runner last August because I wanted a vehicle that
could do some mild trails, take me through snow on trips to the
Sierras (puttin' on chains sucks), haul crap around town (always seems
to be friends' crap), get decent (getting worse) mileage, and be
relatively comfortable (have doors and a heater). For the most part, I
love it. Since I purchased the truck, I added 31's, rims, three inches
of Downey lift, and RS9000's out back. CB, etc. as well.
I've always been one to try and do as much work on my vehicles
myself, so I appreciate the hints and advice I can get from the list.
Thanks.

Just have a quick question. Ran down to Les Schwab today just to talk
to them about sus lift and see what they were asking or them. We talked
a little and I asked what he recommended and he said the Tuff Country
lift is the best one out there for the Toy af of now. To be honest, I
have never heard of this lift before. I'm used to Rancho, Trailmaster,
Superlift, ProComp, but no Tuff Country. I've gone through all the old
threads concerning sus lifts and no reference to them either. Anyone
heard of it?? Pro and cons??? From what the guy said ALL the parts are
single pieces. There are NO welds in the kit, thus making it more
sturdier than most of the other ones. He said the kit is running
somewhere around 750 and install is about 240. Said that will include
everything. Brake lines extended, shocks, etc... This sound like a
good deal. Before now I had my eye set on the ProComp but not sure
now. Although hopefully my friend will come through and I will have a
4" Trailmaster at a very cheap price. Appreciate any help and any
references to web pages where I could get more info on this lift.
Thanks

Well, I made an appt. to go get the 383 yesterday night
but the guy called me and said he had to reschedule so
I was on mmy way over there this morning and I run into
2 deer! Not too much damage but enough. I had to
straighten the fender with the help of a tree and a
come-along. My homemade bumper faired well but the bumper
mounts on the truck didn't. My grill is trashed along
with the plastic assembly that holds the side marker
lights.
Anyway after driving the truck back home I
hop into my car and head off to get the motor. When I get
there the guy says "Shoot, you're 2 hours late so I sold
it to some kid 20 minutes ago" AAAARRRRGGGGG! What a
day!
Well on the way back I stopped off at a convenience store
to pick up the issue of 4wheeler I saw mentioned.
I couldn't find it but I did find the May issue of 4X4 Power
they have a good article on rebuilding Birfields.

I have the bumper off my 1985 4Runner to give away. It has a chrome
brushguard. I would rather give it to someone in Massachusetts but if
the person was willing to pay shipping, then I would ship it.
It is a standard toyota black tinfoil bumper with black endcaps. Some
rust where one of the end caps attach. Chrome brushguard is heavy duty
with slight rusts that can be removed with steel wool.

Okay, been in the Navy for 12 years, yes gonna finish it out to 20. Have

have a '81 pickup, easier to hunt with than a Subaru wagon, that only has

Soon would like to replace 22R with a Toy V6 or such.
Okay, my real question is this. Can I fit a newer Toyota V6 into my '81
engine compartment with out too much trouble? I have read plenty about

From: "David K. Walker" Subject: air deflector
Greetings,
I have found a suitable air deflector to mount on my '88 'Runner,
but I am unsure exactly what sort of fastners to use. I want it to be
strong enough to go through the car wash, I do not want to have ugly
scars in my top where the fastners have failed and ripped out, or broken
off. I don't know how strong the fiberglass shell itself is...
Exactly what fastners and washers did you use?
I have considered expanding wall anchors, as they will distribute
the load over a bigger area around each hole.
Did you remove part of the interior to allow getting to the inside

My 22RE truck has 31" tires too. I can get a maximum of 260 uncorrected miles
per tank of gas. I have been told that this is the average mileage that
people get with this combo. The tires have more wind resistance since they
are wider and they also weigh more than the stock tires. It also takes more
power to get them going.

From: Luke P Miller Subject: 3" wider ifs axle
As I understand it, the desire to put a later ifs rear axle on an early
truck is to clear up the frame rubbing problems when the axle is twisted
up. I assume this is cured because the wider axle is used with the stock
offset wheels, effectively spacing the wheels outwards 1.5 inches on each
side. So I'm wondering, why not just spend few dollars to get wheels with
less back spacing, and keep the axle that's under there.
Wheels with less backspacing would put a bit more strain on the wheel
bearings, but even new wheel bearings every few years are cheaper than
changing the axle. So why go to all the hassle to change axles if you only
want to move the tires away from the frame?
By the way, I also get plenty of wheel rubbing on the rear frame, so I'd
like to stop it somehow. A few more trips to the desert (which is in bloom
right now) and my little rubber flaps on the frame will be worn through.

Charles, I helped a friend put a 383 Stoker in a 2wd S-10 a while back and that thing was scary!!!!!He didn't tub it
out or anything ran semi stock tires in the rear and that thing would break em loose
at just about any speed. I can tell you that he bought a big 3 core radiator and the motor would still
overheat at stoplights it had to be turned off if it sat for more than a min or so. It seemed to me that the thing
made most of it's power at higher RPM's but that could just be the way he had it set up?
Not too good for crawling. but excellent for mud, it would be one hell of a TOY with that thing
under the hood!!! I would be careful a good 383 will make some serious HP and Torque so take
that into consideration with what kind of running gear you plan on using especially if you want to
stick to the Toy components. (no offense to Toy running gear, I just don't think a 10 bolt ring gear
is up to handling a good stroker motor.)

Actually, it has a claimed 190 hp, 250 ft. lbs. of torque.
I just want to make a comment about manufacture "claims" of horse power
ratings. There is no regulation as to standardization of brake ratings.
Manufacturers can claim anything they wnant. This is why you will find
many disscrepincies. for instance, when ford changed their power rating
of the Mustang 5.0 everyone complained. They had made no changes to the
engine. They had simply recallibrated their equipment. Previously 225 hp,
now 205. The engine was tested (brake) on a Mitsubishi duyno,
and the engine was rated at a max. of 178 hp. big difference!
If the Toyota 3.4L and Vortec 4.3L have the same claimed max. horse
power (190), and the Vortec, a much higher torque rating, how does the Taco
dust the chev. in similar vehicles???
Some of it is the difference in measuring equipment.
Some of it is the difference in power delivery; the taco has a flatter,
longer torque curve. While the 3.4 is still accelerating and gaining power,
the 4.3 is pukeing out. Yes, low end power is important for off-road. And no,
the taco is not low on low-end torque. The latest in 4-valve technology
has thrown the revvy-power myth to multi-valve engines out the window.
Just my demonstration that the numbers are not what matters.
If you haven't allready, drive a taco, just for fun :-)
"Oh yea, I'm look'n to buy" $ $
dealer> ^
\_/ he, he
My impression is that the engine is noisier than the 3.0 (all those
extra valves=noise I guess), but man is it a nice performer; smooth, flat
torque curve, don't forget ballsy, better gas milage than 3.0. Doesn't
sound like you're hurting it, up high, like the 4.3. Obviously many of
you agree, having heard earlier comments. :-)

I've had mine off twice. So far the only problem I ever had was that it
sqeaked a bit more than before (about a week after putting it back on).
The last time i put it on, I followed the directions (same as posted, I
think.. they were in the factory repair manual anyway), and armor-alled
all of the rubber strips. So far it squeaks less than it did when I got
the truck (which is to say almost never) and doesn't leak. Just be
careful moving it around. It's not that heavy (a guess.. 150lb??) but
it's a bit awkward to move around, especially through door ways. I
think it's possible to remove by yourself, but I'd never try it. Also,
when I first pulled mine off, it was stuck.. I couldn't get it off.
Best way to break the seal (I think mine may have have been glued down
in a few spots ??) is to fold down the rear seats, stand on top of them,
put your back against the top and just lift with your legs--it'll come
right off, no prob's.

Jimmy I was running one for about a year and half, it worked good kept everything nice and cool.
I did have a few problems with the water though. First off I replaced mine twice during the last year
good thing discount lets you return anything for a new one:) I have it wired to a switch in the dash;
after the first month or so it burned up so I bought a heavier switch (25 amp) it has held up fine since.
I used to switch it off when I saw the swamp in front of me, a couple of times I forgot to turn it back
on until I saw the motor sitting at 250!!! I had it mounted behind the radiator this became a problem
one day while cruising through some water at about 2 feet depth I suddenly hit a hole and the front end
went way down, fan blade twisted and made a small hole in the radiator. I had a small propane torch
and some solder which worked fine and still does. I was going to get a bilge switch and mount it
somewhere under the motor to kill the fan but decided against it although I have seen many others do it.
I now run the stock fan and put the elec. in front of the radiator. having the elec. in front if the water hits
it the blades pull away from the radiator. So far this has worked real good, I only really use the elec. fan when I
run down muddy ruts "pedal to the floor:: you know what I'm talking about" or sometimes the motor gets
hot when rocking myself out of ruts. If you already have the elec. mount it up front if not don't waste your cash.
Final afterthought I did notice a slight power gain at freeway speeds with just the elec. fan, not a lot but
noticeable, something to consider.

To actually attach it to the top, I drilled pilot holes in the
fiberglass, and fastened it down with screws. It holds very well. I've
been through a few car washes with it, but it takes most of it's abuse
from trees on the trail. It's attached very well.....it would take a

how far a stock cruiser can go. I'm starting to consider some mild,
purposeful suspension upgrades - OME perhaps. The PreRunner is new (duh) with
no mods at all.
Oh yeah, one more thing: I want Ivan's job when (if?) he retires.

As an owner of a 96' 4Runner SR5, I have had a head water pump gasket
replaced at 10,000 miles and a head gasket replaced at 20,000 miles.
Besides these problems, the motor has worked fine (I'm up to 30,000). The
only problem with this truck is that the air vents keep cracking. I have
been to the dealership in NY 7 times to have cracked air vents replaced. I
even had part of the dashboard replaced for this problem. Apparently I am
the only 4Runner in America with this problem. On Thursday April 2nd a
factory rep is supposed to look at the problem. I hope this helps.

Question for Jim Brink, or any others who may have the answer. The latest
Consumer Reports mag (98 Cars) shows engine problems on the 96 4Runner.
Have you experienced a disproportionate amount of repairs Jim, or might you
know what this is referencing? BTW, it was Consumer Reports magazines
glowing recommendations of Toyotas that first turned me on years ago. I
have not gone astray since.

My truck is significantly modified. It is powered by a fuel-injected,

total lift (body & suspension), 38" mudders (for the mud season), 33"
all-terrains for other wheeling, full in-cab roll cage, and numerous other
smaller modifications. Not until recently when I changed jobs was I able to
go four-wheeling in the Colorado mountains. I had previously worked

local club, Rising Sun Toyota. Now that my weekends are available, I hope
that this will change real soon.

A friend & I pulled apart a Samuri transfer case Sat. night. It is amazing
how similar the Sammi is to Toyota's. Anybody have any info if some of the
parts are made by the same companies? I know the shifter bushing I replaced
in my truck looks just like the one that should have been in the Sammi
transfer case (disentigrated like mine too).
By the way - real funny being able to hold a transfer case up with one hand
and have the other one free to get the bolts started...

From: Duane D Miller Subject: Transfer Oil Cooler Relocation
I was installing my new Downey Headers this weekend on my 92 4Runner and finally
got to the part where I have to relocate the the transfer oil cooler(This truck
has an automatic tranny). I ordered the relocation kit from Downey ( which
consisted of 2 rubber hoses, a couple of connectors, and no instructions). I
need to know from anyone on the list who has completed this relocation the
following:
- - Where exactly did you relocate the cooler to, and how did you mount it
- - Does the relocation kit replace the elbow connectors on the transfer case or
do they connect to the hoses on the oil cooler. The reason I ask this is
because one set of connectors are smaller that the other and before going into
a royal pain of taking apart things I don't need to, I thought I'd better
check with someone who has done this...
This particular installation has turned out to be a far more PITA that the
previous install I did on my 89 w/ a 5 speed. The front flange of the passenger
side header is hitting the power steering pump bracket. After an afternoon of
grinding, I still have'nt finished... However, the crossover pipe came out
without me having to drop the tranny this time though....
If anyone can offer advice, I would appreciate it!
Duane

There will be no repair here. It is replacement time. I would either
replace it with another 22R, or go Chevy 4.3l Vortec. Plan on spending $2k
for another 22R, at least $3k for a 4.3.

Mine ran right around $200 at Performance (15% off sale). The Flex-A-Lite
Toyota fan is very nicely built. It fits the stock shroud mounting holes, fan
and shroud at one integral piece, built in adjustable thermostatic switch. Its
also got a built-in control module w/ inputs for A/C and manual override.
More info: http://reality.sgi.com/rogerb/4x4/4R_tricks.html#FanControl
The Flex-a-lite fans are about twice what you'd pay for a generic fan, but the
ones I've looked at have less air flow, and you need to fabricate mounting
brackets for the fan and thermostat.
