A motor block being soft doesn't make it unreliable.
Statistics can be proven for anything if you want to find a
reason to prove it so. Spose you just accept the fact that
every car made on the planet is the number one selling car.
They have facts to prove it also. Doesnt make what they say
true. You say chevy motors cant last a year without being
rebuilt. That they break down all the time. Prove it! I have
my proof sitting in my truck. And every other chevy vehicle
doesnt meet your statistics. I could find statistics against
toyota's out there if I wanted to. But why bother. Chevy has
been building the 350 longer then toyota has made trucks,
have you ever considered that the blocks are soft for a
valid reason.> I know more about the metalurgy of>the chevy engine than, it seems anyone who has commented.
They are soft.>This is something you all should know...>>Jon>>===========================================================

I run a rockwell military transfercase. I placed it dead
center in the frame so the front and rear driveshafts are
the same length. The transfercase has a 5-6 inch drop
between the input and output yokes. So I dont need cv joints
in my driveshafts. Which means I save big bucks making
driveshafts. Also if I blow the rear shaft, I can easilly
swap front for rear. Because I used this setup, I am able to
pull off 8 inches of suspension and not need cvs or worry
about binding of any sort. Anougher advantage is that 2wd
tranny's are cheaper then the 4wd counterpart. Save more
money there. If you dont want the weight or size of the
rockwell, look at nissans, they use a divorced transfcase in
some year of there trucks. Look at military stuff, lots of
then ran divorced transfercases. just pick what you want
like I did. The other option is to buy a ford 205
transfercase and use the divorced parts of it on a chevy
 205. This gives you the correct side for toyota axles. (so
 I've heard) Happy hunting

Actually I believe the real reason that the chevy motor is
the most popular to upgrade is because it offers the
cheapest horsepower for the buck. From the mild to the
extreme. All and still being reliable. People wouldn't buy
chevys if they didnt work. Chevy wouldn't be the company it
is if they are anywhere near as bad as you think they are.
And not to rag on you, chevy owners bug me all the time too,
"if you want chevy, buy a chevy" "How dare you put a chevy
in THAT!" etc etc. Everybody's the same. So what do I
naturally do? I paint the 350 ford blue instead of orange or
yellow. You should see their faces! Pure outrage that I
 defiled a chevy motor.
You dont want to put a 350 in your truck, fine, don't! But
don't disuade other that are considering it but useing
remarks that cant be proven and/or just not true. Let them
try it, either by doing it or riding in one that's been
done. Why do people put mazda springs under a toy. cause it
gets the job done! Why a V8, same!

 2. The chevy engine is so popular to upgrade because of its
 long history
of short life span - frequent rebuilds. If you're gonna do
 it so often
your going to start think about different parts. The
 availability of
parts has nothing to do with the quality of engineering of
 the engine.

Mine is like every other Toyota I had but better. I disliked the heater
controls on the older Toyota's and they changed it. I really wanted antilock
brakes with the big tires and now I got it. The whole truck is solid and
tough like the others I've owned. I briefly had a 96 GMC Sanoma ZR2, it was
a great truck but it felt wrong. I can't really describe it but it wasn't a
Toyota, it felt like a car or something. I think it isolated the driver too
much from the environment. Anyway, thats my opinion after 5 days. :-)

Russ - who runs the place - knows what he is doing.
As fas as I can tell - Downey and NWOR get their
 injectors from RC.
I wouldnt bother with junkyard injectos unless
you really like to flush out your EFI system.
 [Marline Q]
The Pictures I have seen show the second handle comming
up through the little "pocket" hole that is just
in front of the the storage box part of the center
 console.
The JP Eater idea was to "weld" the two shifters to the same rail.
There is only one shifter, becuase you shift BOTH transfer cases
at the same time. In other words - you can have
 2WD hi
 4WD
4WD lolo (both 2.25 gears engaged)
But you can not get 4WD lo (single 2.25 gear)
I have not seen the much better idea of having either three shifters,
or a way to control all three shifts with one shifter.

Skip the 6.2 and go for the 6.5L, the 6.2L had quite a few problems.

I have owned CJ5,6,7 and Scrambler's (still have a CJ 6 and CJ 7) and
I agree the Scrambler feels alot like driving a Solid axel Toy. About
putting the Toy axel in the rear, it is a stronger rear end than the
stock CJ8, but isn't the overall lenght shorter on the Toy axle? I
know the Toy axle will fit under the old CJ 2A without major mod's and
that it is a pretty stright forward swap. And this is not a person
screaming in pain. I believe it would be a good swap if the length is
 right.

how Chevy engines aren't reliable. I've got numerous cases where Chevy
engines, work horse engines have run and run and run ... with NO maintenance
whatsoever ... not changing the oil, plugs, filters, not a thing. Granted a
toyota engine could run for a long time under the same conditions ... but
Toyota 4 cyl. engines just down have much power. Plain and simple ...
As to the rest of your ranting ... you might want to look into rec.autos.4x4
there are alot of other people with your mindset that might like to 'converse'

I believe the Turbo 22RE only put out ~150hp. It is not in the V-8 class
of power. The Toyota just has a weight advantage which will make its hp/lb
higher. David is right. It is comparing apples and oranges.
Since we're on the subject of engines, and swaps, does anyone know if it's
possible to swap a 22R with a 22RTE? And how hard would it be? My 22R just
has absolutely no power anymore. I've got 140K miles, which isn't too bad.
But when I'm on the Highway cruising about 65-70 the truck always
decelerates on inclines, small or big, I can't keep up the speed, even with
my foot to the floor. I have to be going 75mph to get up a hill without
slowing down. I've been thinking about a swap for a long time, But I just
don't know what to do. What do you think?

My 22RE motor has already had timing chain replaced and needed a new head
gasket when it blew and leaked coolant into the number 1 cylinder
(previous owner showed records of oil changes every 3K miles). I believe
the head is slightly warped since it doesn't mate well with my NWOR header
(which mated extremely well on my old but same year 22RE). I think the
motors are very underpowered and the 3.0V6 eats too much gas. I took a 400

(5.0 V8). Guess who got the best gas mileage? He did. He got 24mpg and I
only got 22mpg. His engine has 150K+ miles but yet can do sub 14 sec
quarter miles. He beats the hell out of that engine every weekend at the
track but also takes care of it. My truck would be measured in minutes for
 a quarter mile.
Here are some of the benefits.
 1) Improved gas mileage when towing. It is well known that a smaller
engine will consume more gas when towing a large load compared to a V-8
towing the same load. The smaller engine has to work outside its normal
 parameters.
 2) Improved torque curve. Torque will come on at a lower RPM. This is good
for slow speed 4x4. 22RE does a good job of turning the factory tires but
gives up the ghost on larger tires.
 3) Higher torque curve. Engine will produce more torque at any RPM. Nice
for those long hills where now I have to downshift and increase the RPMs
 on my 22RE.
 4) Inexpensive parts. Parts are readily available from high performance
manufacturers. You don't have to buy cheap parts but you can get high
quality inexpensive parts from many manufacturers.
 5) Horsepower. I can keep the engine in a lower RPM to generate more
horsepower than a 22RE to allow me to pass people, accelerate and tow. I
wouldn't have to push the engine past 3500 rpms much at all. This actually
reduces the wear and tear on the engine. A V-8 motor also distributes that
wear and tear across larger and stronger components. If you are using 50hp
to drive down the street, that 22RE will be distributing that 50hp on
fewer and small components (4cylinder) while the V-8 will be distributing
that same 50hp across more components which are larger and stronger.
Compare the size of the connecting rods, or the piston size or the crank
shaft. Now, if you are doing 1/4 mile runs, that V-8 has the ability to
put out 225+hp which will allow more force on all the components. If you
built a 22RE to put out 225+hp, I bet you would be rebuilding that motor
every year. The stock components couldn't do it, nor should you want to do
it. The reason you might be thinking that a V-8 is less reliable may be
that it has to handle 225+hp and 300lbs of torque through out its life.
 The 22RE isn't even in the same ball park with 116hp (1985). I can't
remember the torque figures but it isn't at all close to 300lbs.
Now, I personally don't know of a V-8 that has needed a rebuild. My
brother has a Chevy Caprice with a V-8 with 150K+ miles and a Pontiac GTA
160K+ miles. Both motors are running very well. The above mustang GT still
has the original motor. My grandfather still has a 454ci V-8 in New
Zealand from 1971 that runs great on lpg and gas. He keeps putting it in
 different cars and boats.
As far as toyota motors go. We had a camry that broke its timing belt at
80K miles, which was replaced and the motor inspected. However, at 120K
miles, a piston collasped and the motor blew, maybe due to a valve hitting
a pistion earlier. It now has a rebuilt motor. My previous truck (22RE)
needed a head gasket replacement, and a new timing chain at 140K miles. My
current truck also needed a new head gasket, and has had its timing chain
 done.
My brother-in-law has a Dakota 4x4 with the 319 V-8. It is very sweet to
drive. When I hit the gas in that thing, it goes. No windup needed. No
rubber band tightening. I have out accelerated many sport cars in that
truck. Geo Metro's have out accelerated me in my 4Runner :-(
As soon as my current motor goes, in goes a Ford HO V-8 with a T-5
 transmission.

The law is in place to keep other companies from under bidding the ONE
company that has the actual contract to tow in Pismo. It's also to keep
regular folk like you and me from 'stealing' tows from the tow company,
and running them out of business.
But when you find out the tow company's rates start at $100 and go up
without limit, you really to wonder about this situation. I've heard of
motorhomes being charged $1000+ for assistance in crossing the 30 ft
wide creek. The going rate for tugging someone out of the creek this
last saturday was $160....so Chris saved that guy a $160 tow, and
 accepted nothing in return.
I think Chris spent a total of 2 minutes helping the guy...including
driving over to where he was stuck, hooking up the strap, etc. And the
pull itself was VERY light. 2-3 guys with a rope could have done the
same pull. Plus they only need to be pulled 5 foot, so they could get
outta the water.....any one actually think that is worth $160? I sure
 don't.
The kicker is that Chris wasn't trying to 'undercut' the tow
company....he was trying to help a fellow wheeler in need...and it
nearly got him in trouble. Ridiculous, isn't it?

From: Karl Bellve Subject: Installed T-13, lights, and old bumper
Well, I finished installing my new TJM bull bar. I took pictures of my truck
and the installation. As soon as I get them developed, I will post the pictures.
Overall, I am very impressed. The bumper mounts are absolutely huge, and
each one is mounted to the frame with 4 bolts, 8 bolts total. They are
reenforced. 6 bolts than attach the bumper to the mounts, two on top, and 4
in front. The top of the bumper is about 3-4 inches above the front of the
hood. There are two light tabs and an antenna mount (which is on the wrong
side for a USA truck). I mounted my license plate over the winch hole. I
drilled two new holes in the license plate to make it line up with the
bumper holes. But it looks like the license plate belongs there. The valence
is still used, but it threads through a space in the bumper mounts. I might
take it off later but it currently looks ok. The bumper comes with
integrated turn signals that I spliced into my old connectors, then
 connected it to the truck.
I am extremely happy I bought this bumper. Now, I just have to wait to see
how it rusts. I will try and coat the inside with a sealent. I did put
silicon around all the bolts to keep water out.
I am also looking into two new driving lights. I am thinking about the Hella
4000s. I am not sure which pattern to get yet. The only thing I really
needed is a rust proof case and I think these Hellas use a zinc allow. Any
suggestions? $250 is my limit for a pair of lights and harness.
Now, I need to get rid of my old bumper and pushbar. If people need pieces
of the old factory bumper (1985), I can send it to them. If they want the
old pushar, make an offer. It mounts to the frame on the bottom, and to the
top of the bumper. It is chrome with some rust but can be cleaned up with
steel wool. It is fairly heavy duty.

 Hey listers....

I was talking to my parents and they said their 4 Runner was getting very

the coolant was 1/2 gallon low. So I topped it off and said I would keep
an eye on it. Well this morning I decided to look into the radiator and it
was low again. I am thinking there is a possible leak somewhere in the
cooling system. So I take a closer look inside the radiator filler hole
and I see this square rubber gasket. I say ..."What the ..." and now I am
totally confused as to what this could be. It is about 1.5" X 2.5" with
rounded corners. Can anyone help me figure where this gasket came from and
 what to do about it?

I just put a Dynomax Super Turbo on my '88 V6 a month ago. It wasn't the

2.5" out. The replaced from the muffler back with an adapter from the stock
small tubing to 2.5" tail pipe. My exhaust sound is throaty and breathes
great. Gave some more HP from 2500- 3000 rpm. It's pretty quiet at anything
above idle. The stock muffler was really quiet, so quiet you could hardly
tell it was running. Of course the newer V6's have better flowing mufflers
than the old ones. My moms stock '95 almost as loud as my Dynomax. Perhaps
you got the cylindrical Toyota direct fit Dynomax. Mine is a 3 chamber that
 will work on a V8.

(4.7 ration in second Tcase). This works well but I needed to replace
the tunnel and some of the firewall to do it. I get about 28 Mpg around
town 20Mpg on the Freeway and 35Mpg offroad. Yes offroad uses less fuel
and I chew fuel on the freeway due to the gears and the weight I'm

The Rangers talked about what would happen if the rope broke and someone got
hurt. They also said that they want to support the local tow company that has
the contract to due the towing on the beach. That day they were getting $165 to
pull people out of the creek. I think this is a rip-off. Those of us that go
wheeling should stick together. I am not going to destroy my truck trying to
help out someone but If an easy pull is all they need that I consider that part
of wheeling. If I had to pay a tow truck each time I got stuck I could not
afford to go where I do. I rely (somewhat) on others with me. Before going into
the water each time I made sure that one from our group was near by.
It is an unchangeable part of wheeling, if you see someone broke down on the
trail you going to stop and help, get parts or what ever you can because AAA
aint going to get there any time soon!

I find that with the extra torque out of the V8 I dont need to keep my foot
into it. So in fact my gas mileage has gone up for me in the bush and on the
road. I went with the Chev 4-speed as I really dont like autos. Just me
 thow. To each there own.
Another reason that I went to V8 in my Toy and not a Chev it the total
weight thing. I can float across just abought anything with the flutter of
the throttle where a Toy would power out and a Chev would either sink or
spin and dig in. I wish ya'll could experience what a Chevota is capable of.
I guess you know as your truck do the same thing. Just take it one step
farther!! We all LOVE out trucks and that is why were here sharing our own

I have to say that I am much less confused about these conversions, now.
I have noticed that many of you have converted over from 20R motors.
THIS I can understand! They ARE gutless!!
Like I've said before, though, I have a 22RTE. Stock, it had 135 hp and 178 ft.
lbs. of torque. After changing the exhaust and tweeking the boost by 3
psi. the results are astounding. Personally, I will never need more
power. Yes, it does eat V8s on the hills. No, I'm sure it won't eat ALL,

 Terry,
I'm glad you found a set of wheels like you were looking for. There
aren't too many manufacturers that make aluminum rims with the 4.5"
backspacing that Toyota wheels have. (This prevents the wheels and tires
from protruding out of the wheelwells.) The SR5 cast aluminum rims seem
tougher than aftermarket aluminum ones. I like the way they look too.
As far as "restoring" your '87, as I mentioned before, the '89-'95 rear
bumpers will fit your truck nicely. You also mentioned wanting to replace your
SR5 striping. When the bed of my truck was repainted after someone hit me,
the right side and tailgate stripes, "Toyota" name badge, and "SR5"
badges were all available from Toyota, however they no longer have left
side stripes ANYWHERE. Mine had to be custom made via computer and I
am amazed how identical they look to the "real" stripes. I had it done
in Sacramento, CA and I can send you the info if you would like.>In the interim, I got a wild hair and purchased a new 98 Tacoma TRD.>This truck is pretty neat.>Does anyone out there like/ dislike, have comments on the TRD truck?
Congratulations! I think that it's awesome that Toyota makes lockers
available from the factory (Tacomas, 4Runners, and Land Cruisers). They
have no negative on-road behavior just like the expensive ARB Air
lockers. The Tacomas weigh 400 lbs. less than the trucks they replace and
the V6s have 40 more horsepower than the V6 it replaces. Makes for a
fun-to-drive package. The progressive coils and unique rear springs make
up for the soft ride than some complain about with the non-TRD trucks. I
have heard people say that the Tacomas are not constructed as well as the
previous generation trucks and develop more squeaks and rattles earlier, but I
 have only heard not experienced.

I got a Sunfire Red TRD 5 speed. It has the SR5 package with anti lock
brakes and the all weather guard package. I really like it so far. I may put
the supercharger on in the future but I have more important things to do to
it first. I just got a pop-up sun-roof and an alarm system. Next week I have
a bed-liner sprayed in (my second, I loved the first) and I got a bed cover
coming this weekend. Then comes the stereo. :-)
The ZR2 was nice looking in its own way. Its not as refined as the Toyota,
more of a rugged look (but good). I didn't like the engine. It was load and
weak and low revving. The interior was all right but the Toyota's better.
Hows the limited option? What did it give you?

Gee, I think for sure they were. It's typical. I keep an even 70... they
tailgate me down hill, so I let them pass, only to get stuck behind them
on the up hill. I can tell they are making their engine puke to try and
dust me, 'cause its smoke'n when they downshift. Do they pull away? No. I
usually pass them in the slow lane, eventually.
Just a note: my engine is bone stock. I do have exhaust and 9psi (vs. 6).
This made huge changes: an already peppy engine turned into what feels,
by the seat of the pants, to be twice as powerful.

I have to agree with you on that one, Chris. The Rangers have gone too
far. I suspect that the tow co.s have whined to them about too many
friendly people cutting into their buisness of ripping people off. Ken
had a good idea: make a magnetic sign that says "FREE TOWING, JUST ASK".
That way you are not soliciting your services (friendly help) to
strangers. I don't think that they would take kindly to that.
I never realized that towing was so expensive there...never stuck alone.
I guess every body's got to make a living, but this is a mandated private
monopoly! You should have to have a licence to charge for towing, this I
understand. What ever happened to friendly help?!!!
Glad you guys had a good time, sorry I couldn't join you. Sounds like

I have heard of this being done on several occasions. The "Toyota Bible"
by Moses Ludel has an article on how to swap a fuel injected 22R-E into a
truck that came with a carburated engine. They comment that swapping a
22R-TE for a 22R would be the same.
I was watching a video while I was at Central Fourwheel Drive in
Sacramento and a guy had an '85 4Runner with tons of wheeltravel,
lockers front and rear, 33" tires, and a turbo engine from an
'87 truck. VERY nice rig!! I think it's a great engine.
Has tons of power and very reliable. Has the power of the V6
and the gas mileage of the 4 cylinder.

I have 5 Weld wheels that were clear-coated about a year and a half ago.
There is a bit of corrosion under the clear coating, so I want to remove
the coating and re-polish the wheels. I talked to a wheel shop and they
said the only option was beadblasting and professional polishing at the
cost of $175/each wheel. I'd buy more wheels before doing that!
Anyone have any ideas? I'm not opposed to using a little elbow grease
