I want something that if i hit a car ("push")> the truck/pushbar will not be affected, the car well the worse of it is the> funnier.> I will say that there is almost no way that any bumper or frame mount push bar
will help in this situation. Every truck with a push bar that I heve seen get
in a wreck ended up with more damege from the bar. The bar always ends up
getting "pushed" bach into the hood. Simple leverage tells you that this will
happen. If you want real protection, get a better bumper.

My friend Vic ha a 81 with 38.5" Ground Hawgs, and a chevy
350 with 4 speed manual tranny. He gets 18.5 miles to the
gallon. It sure helps going from a motor that works too hard
to one that doesn't "NEED" to work at all. I havent been
able to get a gas milage from my 350 / 40" Ground hawgs
since I had the pleasure of blowing my tranny. (turbo 350)
The new turbo350 is in and I'll be able to get a gas milage

No, Mr. Miller is correct. You can replace the main bearings in this
manner. Rod bearings should work by the same method, though usually
you've already pulled the head and yanked the pistons and rods out.

I would say that there is a carburetion problem here.
Have you tried adjusting the idle mixture any? I would start at about 2
 1/2 turns out from bottomed-out.
Is the choke plate opening fully? How about the internal cleanliness of
the carb? I wouldn't doubt, looking at these numbers, that the idle
circuits and air bleeds, plus the bowl vents are restricted. Try some
carb. cleaner and compressed air and give the carb. a good cleaning.
With CO numbers like that, there is no way even a new CAT could clean up
this motor. Focus your attention towards the carb. then check secondary
items like ignition timing including advance.

manufactures and tires are daunting. I would like some negative and/or
positive feedback on differnt makes. I live in the NE (Long Island) and try
to go off road as much as possible, but it usually involves the beach (legal
off-roading seems to be lacking here - please correct me if you know of any
good places in this area. Additionally I was thinking of going with a
slightly larger tire, maybe a 31" Would this impact me in any other way
besides slightly worse gas mileage and my speedometer being off by a few
 mph?

Could also be a tired oil pump or chain tensioner. There is a little
cylinder on the front of the motor that tightens the chain and is
pressurized with oil from the motor. If this is worn out (or the oil
pump) it won't come up to pressure as fast and the chain can rattle
around. My truck was making these noises for a while (220K miles)

yes the alloy (grade) of aluminum will make a difference. Even though
it will be .5 inch if you use a soft alloy there is a greater chance
of breaking or fracturing compared to a hard alloy. What is the
purpose of the spacer? Also if you can give me what dimensions you are
wanting to use for the spacer I may be able to get you some pieces of
aluminum close to what you want, you may have to cut it down to the
size you want. Also how many pieces?

think you can beat a set of either BF Goodrich AT's or MT's. I've been
running BFG AT's on my OTHER 4x4 and they have
ALWAYS gotten me where I needed to go , mostly mud running between
fishing or hunting spots. My rear tires have over 40K miles on them and
still look great and the fronts were replaced at just under 40K not
because they wore out, but due to the characteristics of the Ford
Twin I-Beam set-up , my tread seperated with still close to 1/3 life
 left on the tires.....
 Hope this helps ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

From: "james stevenson" Subject: Trip to Aus"trail"ia>Do you do this trip every year?
I usually go wheeling most weekends. I have to do 20Km of serious
wheeling through the Great Dividing range to get to the gate of my farm.
Then another 14 through the mountains to get to the cabins. We cut the
trail up and down the mountains with a D9. As far as major trips I do
2-3 per year. Usually June and September but sometimes December or
January as well. I don't usually do the same trip twice. I am doing the
Canning Stock Route (Kalgoolie to Halls Creek) 200Km no water no towns
again next year however. And then up into the Kimberley Region in the
top end. I am lucky enough to be able to take 4 months off each year.
Hey it's my company so I think I'm worth it. Its also a Tax right off as
I take a few of the guys/gals from the workshop along as training. The
Canning is HARD !!. It will break the camels back. Rover tried 2 yrs ago
with 6 Camel Trophy prepped Land Rovers as a recon to run the camel
trophy here. None made it. In fact they were rescued by 2 Toyota Hilux
 Solid Diesel Pickups.

Two things are wrong Jap spring steel is useless and the springs you
have are dead. If you replace with Toy spring the same thing will
happen. The steel is so bad that you cant find a new truck one on the
lot without sagged springs. The springs should be straight. They flex in
a positive and negative arch. A 3in lift spring will flex in a positive
arch only. To keep the stock springs and fix the problem. First go and
weigh the weight on the front axle. Remove the springs and shocks from
the truck. weld a support from the top of the shock tower to the inside
edge of the frame. Pull apart the spring pack and remove all of the
leaves except for the first two. Re install them on the truck. In place
of the stock shocks use Coil over shocks (not 4 way type). The retailer
of the shocks can get the correct coil if you give him the weight you
got earlier. With the coil overs the weight of the truck is controlled
via the shocks and the springs only locate the axle. You can use this
setup all the way up to 9 in lift with good results.

From: "james stevenson" Subject: buggy springs>I just read how you put buggy springs on a simulator and got the>truck to self destruct.
To explain the simulator first. I have a Cray midrange with Sun Spark
stations. The Cray does the number crunching and the Suns do the real
time graphics modelling. I also have a number of IBM PC workstations
which run other simulations. I have the Toy frame in the simulator and
can run a mod in real or extended time. The whole setup is linked to the
Mills lathes ect. Blueprints are kept in the system and can be recalled
from the terminals on the shop floor.>What kind of forces were you subjecting the frame/suspension to?>I had a panhard rod set up for a while
It depends on the rate of the spring, the length and mount as well as
the travel of the suspension. The panhard will help a lot. If you have
the weight of the truck on one wheel (pushing one down) you are exerting
about 6 tonne on the opposing leaf spring (depending on spring rates and
vehicles weight). This 6 ton is transferred to the buggy spring. If you
bolts are say 3 inch apart and a 12 in long spring is used the force
will be 3 time higher on the second bolt (18 tonne) A ? inch grad 8
bolt has a tensile strength of 9.7 Tonne, a 3/8 in a fine thread would
be much better.>I have the buggy springs attached to the frame with 1/2" inch bolts,>which I don't think are even grade 8. Maybe grade 5.
Grade 5 will break at 7.7 Tonne.>If I were to but buggy springs on the front, I would do a lot more>engineering, with some sort of link or something. At that point, I>agree with you, other methods would be simpler, and give better>results.
The stress is a lot more on the front but a double shackle in the rear
will still be easier to do, be safer and give you more travel. For this
reason alone I don't do the buggy spring's>should be waiting for impending doom.
It depends in the factors above>Will the softer springs play havoc with the buggy springs as well?
Softer springs put less load on the buggy spring>I got your response about your plans for TonkaTuff3, but did not>get the pictures. Is there something I need to do to decode these>pictures?
