I've got an '85 4SKINRUNNER and I was wondering who's tried this tire gear combo. I now have 32's and I'm still running my 4.10's. I'm wanting to know if anyone has ran 32's with a 4.88 gear. What RPM range would I be looking at? Would it be like trying to drive in 4 low with the 4.88's? I've done many gear changes but, they've all been with 35" or larger. I had a perfect set up with my 36" Buckshots and a 5.29 gear. My 38" Monster Gumbo's even ran real good with a 5.71. I've now come down to earth back to a smaller Toy for my daily driver. I pull a bass boat alot and I don't want to over or under gear my 4SKINRUNNER. Please send any information possible to HammerHead1@worldnet.att.net

There is a switch on the transfer case-- see if it's unplugged-you may
have just tugged on the wire and pulled the plug off. Either plug it in
if it needs it or unplug it and jump the wires inside the plug. If the
light goes on, it means the switch is bad. If it doesn't go on, then
something in the wiring is bad(or the bulb). You can also put an
ohmmeter (or continuity tester) across the switch terminals and check
continuity with the lever both in and out of 4wd. Don't forget that you
also have a backup light switch under there, too. Make sure you test the
right one.
Seems like it should be related to the interior wiring (not the switch)
since you just replaced the carpet, but I've seen stranger coincidences.
Oh, yeah, a little Liquid Nails will keep that wire from unplugging
again........

From: Ken Emanuel Subject: A/C Recharging
To: Toyota E-mail List Group Hi all,
My truck was involved in a traffic accident a few years ago that
severed the air conditioning line that runs into the air conditioning
condensor. I had the aluminum line welded last year in hopes of coming
up with enough money to have the system recharged (I'm a college
student.) So the air conditioning system has been without any freon for
3 years now, and I was wondering if it would even be worth it to try and
have it recharged. I figured that by now all of the seals may be bad,
and most A/C places charge a lot of $$ to evacuate and test the system.
So for you A/C experts, what do you think? Keep in mind that Freon
(R12) costs about $150-175 to fill my system. It's an '87 model year.
Thanks a lot,
Ken Emanuel

check for leaks. Most likely, the o-rings that seal the lines to the
condenser are shot (common in these models). If the system is completly
empty, you can buy the o-rings from Toyota (under $20) and replace these
yourself. Count on replacing the dryer assembly too (about $30).
In addition, not running an A/C compressor for long periods of time can
have adverse effects too.

What are:

Multiple Shift Locations available?
Anyone have the lowdown on this?

A tank, pressure switch, relief valve, on/off switch and enough hose to
connect it all. I mounted the tank under the forward edge of the bed, above
the driveshaft. The pressure switch and relief valve were installed on the
tank. I routed 1/2 inch hose from the outlet of the compressor to the tank
then the outlet from the tank back to the engine compartment. Mounted a
quick connecter and switch on a little metal box I built. Put som slick 50
(Thanks Jay) in the compressor, then a pvc type air filter on the suction
side of the tank. I also installed a drain valve on the low point of the
tank and formed a P trap on the outlet hose from the compressor to minimize
oil buildup in the tank.

Yes, I used the bracket off of the Celica. Bolted right in. I don't have

But thanks to everyone for the pointers on doing the fix. If I had the time, I

I'm truely SHOCKED they owned up to it. Perhaps they're changing the
customer abuse (oh...I mean service) policy.
When Mark and I were working on his springs this weekend we were in a
bind and needed some spring clamps that same day. 4WPW only had one in
stock...so we went to Access+ for the other. They actually price
matched for me...first time EVER! They've always said no when I've
asked before.
BTW...4WPW charged me $3....Access+ wanted $6 (before the price
match...) What's that tell you about their markup?

I'm up for the 2-4, or 23-25. They should both work for me, exspecially if
I get my vacation slip in soon. I just finished watching some of last years
vidieos and I'm ready to go right now. Thanks again to Chris Geiger for
heading up the Rubicon trip web site on his home page.

Yes, better go before the annual paving that takes place during the

To: Toy4x4 Another consideration is I hear that the trail is much easier after the
safari's so you might want to plan the trip before the safari's start.
Thats funny though because I think Moab trails are much more difficult
after Easter safari because the trails get really tore up.

The Piarates of the Rubicon said the same thing, that they don't close
it ever, I did talk to the jeep jam people and they said we can go all
the way to Rubicon springs and the trail may be open by the time we get
there. I would hate to lead the group in only to be told that we had to
wait or turn around, some of the guys coming from the east coast might
toss me on the barbi for lunch. I would love to crash their party, but
I hate what they do to the trail before hand. They pave it and all. I
would rather go before the yupies get there.

fun, we could also camp out at Buck Island and walk to the big party. I'll
be there wether or not the rest of the yota people go. I have noticed that
the yotas outnumber the heeps anymore...

Jamboree" run. I say we camp out at Buck the day before and just hang there
all day and watch the Jeeps pass through. Could also stay at Spider but
don't think we would fit at the springs.
Last year I camped out at spider next to the little sluice and talked with
the rock rollers all day. They were really nice and so were all the jeeps.

They don't own all the trail but they do own Rubicon Springs and you
can't do the whole trail without going through the Springs. It's the
springs that caused the trail to be built in the first place.

For my own reasons - the later the better - (I'm waiting for the new electric
lockers, and my wife's 7.5 mo. pregnant now - too early and I will be still
grounded...) I'd even vote for maybe 4 or 5 weeks after if it let's the trail
return to 'normal'
Speaking of the lockers - everyone call powertrax at 1-800-lockers and tell them
to get off their butt and manufacture the electric lockers! (should retail for
around $400 each as I'm told!)

OK, inquiring minds want to know - how were they reworked? details please.
How long has it been modified? Is it holding up well? Is it rust

ok, I need help....
Local 'yard has a set of hubs and I need to be able to tell the difference
between IFS and solid axle ones, as they are not sure. I held them up against
my truck (IFS) and the silver body part looked the same. But, the difference
is in the red turning part. My IFS hubs are flat. The ones the Jyard had
were raised on each of the "thumbpieces" of the red part. Which are these?
How to tell them apart?
thanks....

I can also say that this works well.I usually just use my bench vice and
a bfh,but if they are stubborn, the right air chiesel will usually zip
the joint right out.Just be sure to press real hard to keep the point
from bouncing all over the place. The vibes is what works the joint
out,not really the hammerring.

O yeah, you asked about welding current. When you are padding the weld
area with NI-CI rod(some stainless rods will work too),read the box that
the rods came in,and try to use the amperage at the lower end of the
scale(around 70-80 should work). When doing the follow up welding use 130
amps(if your truss is 1/8" or more)and travel fairly fast using several
beads. You don't want to burn into the cast too far,as this brings carbon
into the weld and makes it crack.Be generous when doing your padding,so
yo have enough surface area to weld the truss to.
